WoW Forever Mage Abilities and Spells by Level

A Mage in WoW Forever trains 56 abilities between levels 1 and 60, the most of any class, and a fourth spellbook tab, Comprehension, holds two new spells at level 6: Comprehend Scroll and Study, used to read and research spell scrolls. Blink, Blizzard and Evocation come at 20, together with your first city teleports, Counterspell at 24 and portals at 40. Forever also adds Frostfire Bolt at 40, Teleport: Dalaran at 50, and talents for Arcane Blast and Ice Lance at 20.

Set your level in the planner below: it hides what you already know and shows what you learn at that level and at the next visits. Under it, the same data is written out level by level: every new Mage ability and every stronger rank from 1 to 60, the key abilities and when you get them, what changed against Classic, the spells that come from talents, and the full Mage spell list for each specialization.

WoW Forever Mage Abilities by Level

A Mage in WoW Forever has 56 abilities with trainer ranks: 50 arrive as new spells, and 6 start with a talent point before the trainer sells the higher ranks. The trainer has something for you on 30 levels: level 1, then every even level from 4 to 60, so plan a visit every two levels. The tables below split the 1 to 60 journey into six steps; the first column is the level, the second the abilities you learn for the first time, the third the new ranks with their rank number.

What Changed for Mage Abilities in WoW Forever

Forever gives Mages new spells in every school. Frostfire Bolt is a trainer spell at 40, Arcane Blast, Ice Lance and Arcane Wrath come from talents, and the Comprehension tab adds spell scrolls you research with Study. Damage spells scale far better with spell power than in Classic, Arcane Intellect lasts an hour, and Detect Magic was removed.

These 4 abilities moved the most: they are new in Forever, come earlier than in Classic, no longer need a talent, or have a new name.

Ability Level Change against Classic
Comprehend Scroll 6 Not in Classic
Study 6 Not in Classic
Frostfire Bolt 40 Not in Classic; Season of Discovery had a spell by this name
Teleport: Dalaran 50 Not in Classic

Another 20 Mage spells keep their level but have new numbers: damage, healing, cost, cooldown or spell power scaling. Hover a spell in the planner above to see what changed for that exact rank.

Classic trainers taught these, the Forever trainer does not:

  • Detect Magic, level 16 in Classic

Mage Abilities That Come From Talents

Some Mage abilities start as a talent. You put the point into the talent tree to get the first rank, and after that the trainer sells the higher ranks like any other spell. Others stay talent-only and the trainer never teaches them. The earliest level is when you can reach that row of the tree with every point in it.

Ability Talent tree Ranks from the trainer
Arcane Blast Arcane Rank 2 at 30, Rank 3 at 40, Rank 4 at 50, Rank 5 at 60
Pyroblast Fire Rank 2 at 24, Rank 3 at 30, Rank 4 at 36, Rank 5 at 42, Rank 6 at 48, Rank 7 at 54, Rank 8 at 60
Ice Lance Frost Rank 2 at 28, Rank 3 at 34, Rank 4 at 42, Rank 5 at 48, Rank 6 at 56
Arcane Wrath Arcane Rank 2 at 36, Rank 3 at 48, Rank 4 at 60
Blast Wave Fire Rank 2 at 36, Rank 3 at 44, Rank 4 at 52, Rank 5 at 60
Ice Barrier Frost Rank 2 at 46, Rank 3 at 52, Rank 4 at 58
Ice Block Frost Talent only, from level 25
Presence of Mind Arcane Talent only, from level 30
Cold Snap Frost Talent only, from level 30
Arcane Power Arcane Talent only, from level 40
Combustion Fire Talent only, from level 40

You can plan these points in our WoW Forever Mage talents guide, which explains every tree and the builds for leveling, dungeons and PvP.
