Blacksmithing in WoW Forever covers a lot more than simply making weapons. You can craft mail and plate armor, profession components, and several high-level equipment sets, but the profession burns through a serious amount of metal bars and stone along the way. Pairing it with Mining is therefore the most practical way to keep costs under control instead of buying every material from the Auction House.
This WoW Forever Blacksmithing leveling guide takes you from 1 to 300 step by step. You'll also find the materials needed for each skill range, Blacksmithing trainer locations for both factions, and alternative recipes for the points where plan availability or realm prices can make another route cheaper.
Most equipment recipes require a Blacksmith Hammer, and many of them also need access to an anvil. Buy the hammer as soon as you learn Blacksmithing. It is a small thing, but forgetting it usually means an annoying trip back to a profession supply vendor later.
Blacksmithing is split into Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan ranks. Journeyman increases the skill cap to 150, Expert to 225, and Artisan to 300. One important difference in WoW Forever is that recipe skill-up ranges do not always match older Classic routes, so blindly following a Classic Era 1-300 guide can waste materials or leave you crafting recipes that are no longer efficient.
Mining is the obvious gathering profession to pair with Blacksmithing. Most of this route runs through Copper, Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, and Thorium, and buying all of those bars from the Auction House can make Blacksmithing one of the more expensive professions to level.
The totals below are approximate. Once recipes turn yellow or green, a craft is no longer guaranteed to give a skill point, so buying only the absolute minimum can leave you short. A small reserve of bars and secondary reagents saves a lot of backtracking.
| Material | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rough Stone | 90x | Used for Rough Sharpening Stone and Rough Grinding Stone |
| Copper Bar | 90x | Runed Copper Gauntlets and Runed Copper Belt |
| Coarse Stone | 120x | Craft all Coarse Grinding Stones needed later |
| Bronze Bar | 440x | Main Journeyman material |
| Medium Leather | 25x | Bronze Warhammer |
| Strong Flux | 25x | Vendor material |
| Iron Bar | 90x | Green Iron Bracers |
| Green Dye | 15x | Vendor material |
| Steel Bar | 240x | Golden Scale Bracers and Steel Plate Helm |
| Heavy Stone | 120x | Heavy Grinding Stone |
| Mithril Bar | 150-180x | Exact amount depends on the 185-200 option |
| Mageweave Cloth | 60x | Heavy Mithril Gauntlet route |
| Heavy Leather | 90x | Alternative to Mageweave route |
| Solid Stone | 220x | Solid Grinding Stones for 200+ crafts |
The last 75 points are less tidy. You will need a mix of Mithril, Truesilver, Thorium, leather, gems, grinding stones, and several recipe-specific reagents, and yellow or green crafts can easily push the totals higher. For this part, it makes more sense to buy materials step by step instead of committing to one huge shopping list before you begin.
Blacksmithing can get expensive fast if you buy the wrong bars, miss a recipe breakpoint, or run short on materials halfway through a yellow-skill range.
Apprentice Blacksmithing currently has no character level requirement in WoW Forever. Most characters can learn it in a capital city, while a few starting areas also have nearby trainers.
| Faction / Race | Zone | Trainer |
|---|---|---|
| Horde | Orgrimmar | Ug'thok |
| Horde | Undercity | Basil Frye |
| Horde | Thunder Bluff | Thrag Stonehoof |
| Orc / Troll | Durotar - Razor Hill | Dwukk |
| Undead | Tirisfal Glades - Bandarion Keep | Angus Hammerhand |
| Alliance | Stormwind City | Dane Lindgren |
| Alliance | Ironforge | Groum Stonebeard |
| Human | Elwynn Forest - Goldshire | Smith Argus |
| Dwarf / Gnome | Dun Morogh - Kharanos | Tognus Flintfire |
| Night Elf | Darkshore - Auberdine | Delfrum Flintbeard |
| Skyborne | Zephras Isle - Valanaar | Daeann Steelwind |
| Skyborne | Zephras Isle - Shen'dar Village | Aedi Thriceforged |
There is no Blacksmithing trainer in Teldrassil or Darnassus, so Night Elf characters can use Delfrum Flintbeard in Auberdine. Tauren characters can train in Thunder Bluff rather than Mulgore.
| Rank | Requirement | Horde | Alliance / Both Factions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journeyman | 50 Blacksmithing, level 10 | Snarl - Orgrimmar; James Van Brunt - Undercity; Karn Stonehoof - Thunder Bluff; Angus Hammerhand - Tirisfal Glades | Therum Deepforge - Stormwind; Rotgath Stonebeard - Ironforge |
| Expert | 125 Blacksmithing, level 20 | Saru Steelfury - Orgrimmar | Bengus Deepforge - Ironforge |
| Artisan | 200 Blacksmithing, level 35 | Brikk Keencraft - Booty Bay | Brikk Keencraft - Booty Bay |
Before you start making equipment, pick up a Blacksmith Hammer. Also keep the grinding stones specifically mentioned below. Several later recipes use them as reagents, and selling them early only means crafting them again.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 30x Rough Sharpening Stone | 30x Rough Stone |
The recipe turns yellow before you finish this range, so the exact number of crafts may vary slightly.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 30x Rough Grinding Stone | 60x Rough Stone |
Keep at least 10 Rough Grinding Stones. They are needed for Runed Copper Gauntlets at 70-75.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 60x Coarse Grinding Stone | 120x Coarse Stone |
Craft all 60. Patterned Bronze Bracers later consume the Coarse Grinding Stones made here.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 5x Runed Copper Gauntlets |
|
From this point onward, most equipment crafts require a Blacksmith Hammer.
Train Journeyman Blacksmithing once you have at least 50 Blacksmithing and character level 10.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 5x Runed Copper Belt | 50x Copper Bar |
If Silver Bars happen to be cheaper on your realm, Silver Rod is another option. Each Silver Rod requires 1 Silver Bar and 2 Rough Grinding Stones.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 15x Rough Bronze Leggings | 90x Bronze Bar |
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 30x Patterned Bronze Bracers |
|
This is where the Coarse Grinding Stones from the 50-70 section get used.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 25x Bronze Warhammer |
|
Strong Flux is sold by Blacksmithing Supply vendors near profession trainers in the capital cities.
Expert Blacksmithing becomes available at 125 skill and character level 20. Horde players can train with Saru Steelfury in Orgrimmar, while Alliance players use Bengus Deepforge in Ironforge.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 15x Green Iron Bracers |
Green Dye is sold by Tailoring and Leatherworking Supply vendors.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 20x Golden Scale Bracers |
|
Alliance players planning to complete Armorsmithing-related content may want to keep several of these rather than vendoring them immediately.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 15x Heavy Mithril Gauntlet |
|
Alternative: craft 15x Heavy Mithril Shoulder using 120x Mithril Bar and 90x Heavy Leather if that combination is cheaper on your realm.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 10x Steel Plate Helm |
|
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 15x Mithril Spurs |
|
Plans: Mithril Spurs is a world drop and is commonly obtained through the Auction House. If the plan is unavailable or simply too expensive, keep crafting Steel Plate Helm instead. Expect some additional crafts because it is no longer a guaranteed skill-up for the whole range.
The final 75 points are the most time-consuming part: recipe access, realm prices, and failed yellow skill-ups can force extra farming and additional Auction House purchases.
Train Artisan Blacksmithing from Brikk Keencraft in Booty Bay once you reach 200 Blacksmithing and character level 35. This is where the route becomes much more dependent on plan access and realm prices, so the steps below focus on recipes with clearly documented acquisition methods and current WoW Forever reagent data.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 6x Ornate Mithril Shoulders |
|
Plans: Ornate Mithril Shoulders comes from the Blacksmithing quest The Art of the Imbue. Six crafts leave a little room in case one attempt does not award the final skill point.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| 5-6x Mithril Coif |
|
Mithril Coif is taught by Brikk Keencraft. Bringing one extra craft worth of materials can save you another trip if the skill-up does not land exactly when expected.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| Shining Mithril Helm until 250 |
|
Shining Mithril Helm is a WoW Forever Blacksmithing recipe. It remains useful throughout this stretch, although the last few points are not guaranteed, so the final number of crafts can vary.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| Blight until 265 |
|
Blight is trainer-taught in WoW Forever and gives you a fairly direct way out of the Mithril range. It begins losing guaranteed skill-ups before 265, though, so have extra reagents ready.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| Imperial Plate Bracers | 20x Thorium Bar and 1x Star Ruby per craft |
| Thorium Greatmace | 30x Thorium Bar, 4x Heavy Thorium Bar, 4x Essence of Earth, 10x Azerothium Bar, and 2x Dense Grinding Stone per craft |
Imperial Plate Bracers have much simpler material requirements if you already have the plan from the Imperial Plate quest line. Thorium Greatmace is another option: its plan costs 90 Merchant's Favor from the profession camp exchange and can make sense when reliable plan access matters more than raw material cost.
| Craft | Required Materials |
|---|---|
| Huge Thorium Battleaxe until 300 |
|
Plans: Huge Thorium Battleaxe is sold by Magnus Frostwake in Western Plaguelands. The recipe does not guarantee a skill point for the entire 280-300 stretch, so buying materials in smaller batches is safer. Stop as soon as you hit 300.
If Thorium Bars or Rugged Leather are expensive on your realm, it is worth checking other high-skill plans before committing to Huge Thorium Battleaxe. Several WoW Forever recipes can still provide skill-ups here, although their plan requirements may make them less convenient if your only goal is reaching 300 quickly.
| Recipe | Key Materials | Acquisition / Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Blessed Plate Bracers | 16x Thorium Bar, 1x Blue Sapphire | Requires Plans: Blessed Plate Bracers |
| Dark Iron Shoulders | 6x Dark Iron Bar, 1x Heart of Fire | Requires the Dark Iron plan and Black Anvil access |
| Girdle of the Dawn | 8x Thorium Bar, 6x Truesilver Bar, 1x Righteous Orb | Vendor plan; compare Righteous Orb cost |
| Dark Iron Bracers | 4x Dark Iron Bar, 2x Fiery Core, 2x Lava Core | Sold by Lokhtos Darkbargainer; requires Black Anvil |
| Imperial Plate Boots | 34x Thorium Bar, 1x Star Ruby, 1x Aquamarine | Quest plan; useful once available at the top end |
Good luck reaching 300 Blacksmithing, conquer! Leveling Mining alongside it already removes a large part of the cost, and a few price checks before the Mithril and Thorium ranges can save you from most of the expensive detours.
The fastest practical route is to follow the recommended crafts for each skill range from Apprentice through Artisan and switch to an alternative recipe when its materials or plan are easier to obtain. Keep extra materials for yellow recipes because they do not guarantee a skill point on every craft.
Blacksmithing 1-300 uses large amounts of Rough, Coarse, Heavy, Solid, and Dense Stone together with Copper, Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Truesilver, and Thorium Bars. Higher skill ranges also require leather, cloth, gems, grinding stones, and recipe-specific reagents. Check the shopping list in this guide before you start so you can prepare the main materials in advance.
Both Horde and Alliance can learn Artisan Blacksmithing from Brikk Keencraft in Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale. You need 200 Blacksmithing skill and character level 35 to train Artisan and continue toward 300.
If your Blacksmithing is capped at 225, you need to train Artisan Blacksmithing. Reach at least 200 Blacksmithing and character level 35, then visit Brikk Keencraft in Booty Bay to increase your profession cap to 300.
Journeyman requires 50 Blacksmithing skill and character level 10. Expert requires 125 Blacksmithing skill and level 20. Artisan requires 200 Blacksmithing skill and level 35.
Not reliably. WoW Forever changes several recipe skill-up ranges, so a Classic Era route can send you into recipes that turn yellow, green, or grey at different skill levels. Use a route built specifically around WoW Forever recipe ranges when leveling from 1 to 300.
The route in this guide uses Huge Thorium Battleaxe for the final 280-300 stretch. Its plan is sold by Magnus Frostwake in Western Plaguelands. Because the recipe does not guarantee a skill point for the entire range, buy materials in smaller batches and stop crafting as soon as you reach 300.
Mithril Spurs is a world-drop plan and may not always be available at a reasonable Auction House price. If you cannot get the plan for the 210-225 range, continue crafting Steel Plate Helm instead. Expect to need additional crafts because it is no longer a guaranteed skill-up throughout the entire range.
Mining is the most natural gathering profession to pair with Blacksmithing. The leveling route consumes large quantities of metal bars and stone, so gathering them yourself can significantly reduce how much gold you spend on the Auction House.
