Engineering in WoW Forever is one of those professions that can empty your bags and your gold surprisingly fast.. Since most crafts eat through metal bars, stone, cloth, and previously crafted Engineering parts, planning the route before you start saves a lot of unnecessary recrafting and travel.
This WoW Forever Engineering leveling guide takes you from 1 to 300 with approximate material totals, important trainer locations, required Engineering tools, recipe alternatives, and the key vendor schematics needed near the end of the profession.
Engineering pairs naturally with Mining because so much of the leveling route depends on bars and stone. Leveling the two professions together lets you gather a large part of the shopping list yourself instead of buying everything from the Auction House. One small thing worth doing immediately: buy a Blacksmith Hammer. Plenty of Engineering crafts require it.
Gnomes follow the same 1-300 skill route as every other race. In WoW Forever, Engineering Specialization no longer gives +15 Engineering skill. Instead, it reduces the chance of Engineering devices failing or backfiring by 20%.
Engineering becomes expensive fast if you sell intermediate parts and then have to craft or buy them again later.
The list below covers the full 1-300 route used in this guide. Totals are approximate because several recipes turn yellow before you finish their range, and those crafts are no longer guaranteed skill points. Keeping a small reserve of the main materials is a much safer approach.
This shopping list follows the main route only. Materials used exclusively by alternative recipes are not included, so you do not end up buying reagents for two leveling paths at once.

|---|---|
| Rough Stone | 60 |
| Copper Bar | 66 |
| Linen Cloth | 50 |
| Coarse Stone | 60 |
| Silver Bar | 5 |
| Bronze Bar | 110 |
| Weak Flux | 25 |
| Moss Agate | 10 |
| Heavy Stone | 30 |
| Wool Cloth | 60 |
| Medium Leather | 15 |
| Steel Bar | 4 |
| Solid Stone | 120 |
| Mithril Bar | 158 |

Apprentice Engineering can be learned from capital-city trainers or from several NPCs near the starting zones. Thunder Bluff and Darnassus do not have Engineering trainers, so Tauren and Night Elf characters need to travel to one of the nearby options listed below.
| Faction / Race | Location | Trainer |
|---|---|---|
| Horde | Orgrimmar | Thund |
| Horde | Undercity | Graham Van Talen |
| Orc / Troll | Razor Hill, Durotar | Mukdrak |
| Tauren | Mulgore, above the Venture Co. Mine | Twizwick Sprocketgrind |
| Undead | Undercity | Graham Van Talen |
| Alliance | Stormwind City | Sprite Jumpsprocket |
| Alliance | Ironforge | Jemma Quikswitch |
| Dwarf / Gnome | Steelgrill's Depot, Dun Morogh | Bronk Guzzlegear |
| Night Elf | Auberdine, Darkshore | Jenna Lemkenilli |
| Skyborne | Shadowgale Forest, Zephras Isle | Strange Hermit |
Most Engineering trainers have an Engineering or Blacksmithing Supply vendor somewhere nearby. In Dun Morogh, pick up the Blacksmith Hammer in Kharanos. On Zephras Isle, Aedi Thriceforged in Shen'dar Village sells one.
| Rank | Requirement | Horde | Alliance / Neutral |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journeyman | 50 Engineering, level 10 | Nogg - Orgrimmar; Franklin Lloyd - Undercity | Lilliam Sparksindle - Stormwind; Trixie Quikswitch - Ironforge; Finbus Geargrind - Duskwood |
| Expert | 125 Engineering, level 20 | Roxxik - Orgrimmar | Springspindle Fizzlegear - Ironforge |
| Artisan | 200 Engineering, level 35 | Buzzek Bracketswing - Gadgetzan, Tanaris | Buzzek Bracketswing - Gadgetzan, Tanaris |
The first skill range is mostly preparation for what comes next. You are making parts that get reused almost immediately, so do not vendor the blasting powder or bolts after crafting them.
| Skill | Craft | Required Materials | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-30 | 60x Rough Blasting Powder | 60x Rough Stone | Keep all 60. The recipe turns yellow at 20, so you may finish above 30. |
| 30-50 | 30x Handful of Copper Bolts | 30x Copper Bar | Keep all 30 for Rough Copper Bomb. |
| 50-51 | 1x Arclight Spanner | 6x Copper Bar | Permanent Engineering tool; keep it. |
Train Journeyman once you reach 50 Engineering and character level 10, and do it before mass-crafting the next recipes. Several crafts in this bracket turn yellow early, so a lucky run of skill-ups can push you farther than the listed range.
| Skill | Craft | Required Materials | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 51-75 | 30x Rough Copper Bomb | 30x Copper Bar; 30x Handful of Copper Bolts; 60x Rough Blasting Powder; 30x Linen Cloth | Yellow from 60. Learn Journeyman first so lucky skill-ups are not wasted at the cap. |
| 75-90 | 60x Coarse Blasting Powder | 60x Coarse Stone | Keep all powder for Coarse Dynamite. Yellow from 85. |
| 90-100 | 20x Coarse Dynamite | 60x Coarse Blasting Powder; 20x Linen Cloth | Yellow through the range; 20 crafts should cover roughly 10 points. |
| 100-105 | 5x Silver Contact | 5x Silver Bar | If Silver Bar is expensive, use 5x Flying Tiger Goggles: 30x Light Leather + 10x Tigerseye. |
| 105-125 | 25x Bronze Tube | 50x Bronze Bar; 25x Weak Flux | Yellow throughout. If you reach the scope recipe early, move on instead of overcrafting tubes. |
| 125-135 | 10x Standard Scope | 10x Bronze Tube; 10x Moss Agate | If Moss Agate is expensive, begin Heavy Blasting Powder earlier. |
| 135-150 | 30x Heavy Blasting Powder + 15x Whirring Bronze Gizmo | 30x Heavy Stone; 30x Bronze Bar; 15x Wool Cloth | Make the powder first. Keep both components for Explosive Sheep. |
Expert Engineering requires 125 skill and character level 20. Horde players train with Roxxik in Orgrimmar, while Alliance players use Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.
| Skill | Craft | Required Materials | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150-160 | 15x Bronze Framework | 30x Bronze Bar; 15x Medium Leather; 15x Wool Cloth | Keep all 15 for Explosive Sheep. You may pass 160. |
| 160-175 | 15x Explosive Sheep | 30x Heavy Blasting Powder; 15x Whirring Bronze Gizmo; 15x Bronze Framework; 30x Wool Cloth | Keep at least 5 if you plan to choose Goblin Engineering. |
| 175-194 | 60x Solid Blasting Powder | 120x Solid Stone | Save the powder. Optional Iron Grenade route can reduce Solid Stone use if your realm prices favor it. |
| 194-195 | 1x Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor | 4x Steel Bar | Keep this Engineering tool. |
| 195-200 | ~6x Mithril Tube | 18x Mithril Bar | Yellow from 195, so one or two extra crafts may be required. |
Do not sell Explosive Sheep, Solid Blasting Powder, Unstable Trigger, or Mithril Casing too early. Recrafting intermediate parts wastes both gold and time.
At 200 Engineering and character level 35, head to Gadgetzan in Tanaris and speak with Buzzek Bracketswing outside the inn. He teaches Artisan Engineering and several higher-skill recipes, so train whatever you need while you are already there.
| Skill | Craft | Required Materials | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200-215 | 20x Unstable Trigger | 20x Mithril Bar; 20x Mageweave Cloth; 20x Solid Blasting Powder | Keep all 20 for Hi-Explosive Bomb. |
| 215-238 | 40x Mithril Casing | 120x Mithril Bar | Keep all 40. Yellow from the start and green from 235. |
| 238-250 | 20x Hi-Explosive Bomb | 40x Mithril Casing; 20x Unstable Trigger; 40x Solid Blasting Powder | Yellow throughout, so the exact finishing point varies. |
| 250-260 | 30x Dense Blasting Powder | 60x Dense Stone | Yellow from 250; keep a small reserve of Dense Stone. |
| 260-285 | 35x Thorium Widget | 105x Thorium Bar; 35x Runecloth | Schematic sold by Sovik in Orgrimmar and Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge. Yellow from 280. |
| 285-300 | 20x Thorium Tube | 120x Thorium Bar | Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold in Everlook, Winterspring by Xizzer Fizzbolt. The schematic is Bind on Pickup, so buy it on the Engineer. |
Engineering specializations start to matter around 200 skill. Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering open access to different recipes and devices. You do not need either specialization to follow the leveling route above and reach 300, although some specialization quests and crafted items use components you make along the way.
The efficient route is the one that reuses intermediate components instead of treating every skill range as a separate craft. Rough Blasting Powder and Handful of Copper Bolts become Rough Copper Bombs, while Heavy Blasting Powder and bronze components feed into Explosive Sheep. Later, the Artisan route reuses Unstable Trigger and Mithril Casing for Hi-Explosive Bomb.
Mining is the most direct pairing because Engineering consumes large amounts of stone and metal bars. Mining can cover Rough, Coarse, Heavy, Solid, and Dense Stone, along with Copper, Bronze, Mithril, and Thorium requirements.
Journeyman Engineering requires 50 Engineering and level 10. Horde players can train with Nogg in Orgrimmar or Franklin Lloyd in Undercity. Alliance players can use Lilliam Sparksindle in Stormwind, Trixie Quikswitch in Ironforge, or Finbus Geargrind in Duskwood.
Expert Engineering requires 125 Engineering and level 20. Horde players train with Roxxik in Orgrimmar, while Alliance players use Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.
Artisan Engineering is learned from Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. You need 200 Engineering and character level 35 before you can train the Artisan rank.
No. Engineering Specialization reduces the chance of Engineering devices failing or backfiring by 20%, so Gnomes use the same leveling ranges as every other race.
Yes. Many Engineering crafts require a Blacksmith Hammer as a tool. Buy one before starting and keep it in your bags while you level the profession.
Yes. The 51-75 Rough Copper Bomb step uses the Rough Blasting Powder and Handful of Copper Bolts created during the opening ranges.
Keep Rough Blasting Powder, Handful of Copper Bolts, Heavy Blasting Powder, Whirring Bronze Gizmo, Bronze Framework, Solid Blasting Powder, Unstable Trigger, Mithril Casing, Arclight Spanner, and Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor until you are past the recipes that consume or require them.
The route uses Schematic: Thorium Widget, sold by Engineering Supply vendors Sovik in Orgrimmar and Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge. The recipe is used for the 260-285 range.
Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook, Winterspring. It is Bind on Pickup, so purchase it with the character leveling Engineering.
The route uses about 105 Thorium Bars for 35 Thorium Widgets and another 120 Thorium Bars for 20 Thorium Tubes. That gives an estimated total of 225 Thorium Bars, although yellow skill-ups can change the exact number of crafts required.
