WoW Forever launches on November 4 without a realm list. Instead of picking a server, you pick a ruleset, and everyone in your region on that ruleset shares one world. That is also why names work differently: every character gets a first and a second name, and the full combination must be unique across the whole region.
The first chance to claim a name comes a week before launch. From October 27 to November 3, anyone who bought a Forever upgrade pack can create up to three characters and keep their names, first come, first served. Behind the scenes, layering splits busy zones into copies so a region-wide world stays playable, and it favors players you already know.
Below we explain how realmless rulesets work, the name reservation dates and rules, what layering means for questing, rare mobs and world PvP, and what the October 21 stress test tells us about launch queues.
WoW Forever is realmless, not regionless. You still play on a regional account (Americas, Europe and so on), but inside your region there is no list of servers to choose from. Blizzard describes each ruleset as a "mega realm": one shared world for every player who picks it.
This removes the oldest launch-day gamble in Classic. You can't end up on a realm that dies after a few months, on one dominated by the other faction, or on one where your friends never showed up. If you and your friends pick the same ruleset and faction in the same region, you can play together.
The ruleset takes the place of the old realm type. Normal, PvP and Roleplay open on November 4, and Hardcore arrives later in winter. A few rules apply to all of them:
We compare all four rulesets, including world PvP and the one-faction rule, in our WoW Forever Normal vs PvP ruleset guide.
Your region decides who you share the world with, and characters, names and progress don't cross regions. Blizzard said cross-region play is not ruled out for later, but it has technical challenges. Oceanic players are hosted on Oceanic data centers and share the US Auction House. When friends from different data centers group up, the game picks the data center that suits the group, so one of you may see higher ping.
Inside a ruleset, the game leans toward putting you with players who share your preferred online language. You set it under Game Menu (Esc), Options, System, Languages and Social, Preferred Online Language. It is an account-wide setting for your region and can be changed once every 24 hours.
Early Name Reservation runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026 (PST), and it is the only way to claim a name before the servers open on November 4. Blizzard has not announced the exact hour it opens on October 27, so watch the official channels that morning. Any characters made during the October 21 stress test are wiped before the window starts.
During the window you log into the full character creator, pick ruleset, faction, race, class and appearance, and save the character with its name. It is not a head start: you can't enter the world, and every character, reserved or not, starts at level 1 on launch night.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When | October 27 to November 3, 2026, PST |
| Who gets access | Owners of any paid upgrade: Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack or Warcraft Forever Collection |
| How many characters | Up to 3 per account |
| How names are assigned | First come, first served; desired names are not guaranteed |
| What must be unique | The full first + second name, across your whole region and all rulesets |
The base game, included with a subscription, does not come with name reservation. If you only plan to subscribe on November 4, you create your characters at launch like everyone else.
Every Forever character has a Main Name and a Secondary Name, and both are required. Only the complete combination has to be free: if someone already took the first name you want, you can still use it with a different second name. Blizzard's own example is a family of characters, Asha Brightvale, Thalen Brightvale and Mira Brightvale, sharing one second name.
If you prefer the classic look, you can hide your second name in the world: Game Menu (Esc), Options, Nameplates, then untick My Secondary Name. It still shows in chat.
The usual naming policy still applies, and the game checks both parts together, so splitting a banned word across the two names will not get it through. Based on the beta, each part must also follow these limits:
There is no paid name change in Forever so far, so choose a name you'll still like at level 60.
The upgrade packs differ in more than name reservation, from beta access to extra Invite-A-Friend codes, as our WoW Forever editions guide shows.
Yes, WoW Forever has layering, and it is what makes a region-wide ruleset possible. A layer is a full copy of a zone. When too many players are in one zone, the game opens another copy and spreads players across them, so you never see everyone on your ruleset at once.
Forever's layering differs from Classic Era in three ways:
Layers change the moment-to-moment game more than most players expect. Here is what that looked like in the beta:
Blizzard's developers call layering a work in progress improved in "incremental steps", so expect changes during the first weeks after launch.
Blizzard has not given capacity numbers or promised a queue-free launch. Its argument is that a realmless setup removes the old trade-off between a crowded realm with long queues and a quiet realm with no community. With no single realm to fill up, the classic "Server 1 of 40 is full" problem should not happen. A login queue for the whole region is still possible on launch night.
The best preview is the open stress test on October 21. Anyone can join: no subscription, game time, invite or beta access is needed. The beta goes offline shortly before it starts and returns after it ends.
| Region | Start time |
|---|---|
| North America | October 21, 2:00 PM PDT |
| Europe | October 21, 19:00 CEST |
| Korea | October 22, 06:00 KST |
| Taiwan | October 22, 05:00 CST |
To join, open the Battle.net app, select World of Warcraft, choose the WoW: Forever Stress Test under In Development in the Game Version menu and install it. All characters, names and guilds from the test are wiped before name reservation opens, so names you use there are not kept.
Your full launch-night plan, from addons to the first hour in game, is in our WoW Forever launch day checklist, and the launch time for every time zone is in our WoW Forever release date guide.
