Bag space is the first wall every new character hits in WoW Forever, and the fix is cheap if you know where to look. Every starting zone now has a quest that rewards a free 6-slot bag, a handful of early mobs drop 6-slot pouches at decent rates, and two Wailing Caverns bags plus a new Horde quest on Skywatcher Plateau take you to 10 and 12 slots before level 30. From there, Tailoring covers everything up to the 20-slot Bottomless Bag, and Forever bag recipes now create two bags per craft.
Below you will find every free starting bag by race, the best mobs for early pouches with their drop chances, the dungeon and quest bags for levels 17 to 30, every crafted bag from Tailoring and Leatherworking, the rare drops for level 60, and a simple bag plan for each stage of leveling.
Each starting zone has one quest that rewards a 6-slot bag, usually by level 7. They bind when picked up, so every new character should grab its own. The table lists the quest for each race and where to start it.
| Race | Quest | Bag | Where to Start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Book Return | Book Bag | Marshal Dughan in Goldshire, Elwynn Forest |
| Dwarf, Gnome, Skyborne (High Order) | Grund and Gozwin | Canvas Latchbag | Anvilmar in Coldridge Valley, Dun Morogh |
| Night Elf | Soft Saber Pelts | Soft Saber Sack | Aldria in Dolanaar, Teldrassil |
| Undead | Sticks and Bones | Collecting Basket | Eleanor Shackleton in Brill, Tirisfal Glades |
| Orc and Troll | Carry Your Weight | Handmade Leather Bag | Furl Scornbrow in the Razor Hill watchtower, Durotar |
| Tauren | Grace of An'she and Mu'sha | Scorched Leather Pouch | Red Cloud Mesa, Mulgore |
| Skyborne | The Problem With Prideclaws | Simple Leather Satchel | Shen'dar Highlands, Zephras Isle |
Carry Your Weight needs 8 Canvas Scraps from the Razor Hill area, and Book Return asks for six lost books and one picture book around Goldshire.
Alliance characters can add an 8-slot bag at level 10 or so: Poor Old Blanchy from Verna Furlbrow in Westfall rewards Old Blanchy's Feed Pouch for eight handfuls of oats from the fields near her farm.
Four colored 6-slot pouches drop from low-level mobs and named enemies in the starting zones. They do not bind, so extra ones can go to alts or the Auction House. The table shows the best known source for each pouch.
| Pouch | Best Source | Zone | Drop Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Blue Pouch | Stephen Bhartec | Tirisfal Glades | 17% |
| Small Brown Pouch | Greenpaw | Teldrassil | 14% |
| Small Brown Pouch | Makrura Snapclaw | Durotar | 10% |
| Small Black Pouch | Frozen Murloc | Elwynn Forest and Tirisfal Glades | 7% |
| Small Red Pouch | Corrupted Mottled Boar | Durotar | 4% |
Stephen Bhartec near Deathknell is the most generous source in the game, so an Undead character should kill him on the way out of the starting area. Ruklar the Trapper in Elwynn Forest drops the Small Brown Pouch 10% of the time as well, and the same pouch is also sold by some vendors.
Wailing Caverns in the Barrens is the first big upgrade, and both of its bags have 10 slots. Horde and Alliance can earn them.
The dungeon quests and boss order for every early dungeon are in our WoW Forever dungeons overview.
Forever adds a new area for Horde players north of Thunder Bluff: Skywatcher Plateau. Its quest Stronger than Steel rewards the 12-slot Spidersilk Pouch together with the Crystal Thread Cloak. The quest requires level 23 and is listed at level 30, so it is easiest at 25 or higher.
A 12-slot bag before level 30 is as large as a crafted Mageweave Bag, which is why this quest is worth a detour for every Horde character, alts included.
Tailoring makes the most common bags in the game. In Forever every bag recipe below creates two bags per craft, which halves the material cost and makes it easy to supply alts. The basic recipes come from the trainer, and the larger bags need patterns.
| Bag | Slots | Profession | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linen Bag | 6 | Tailoring | Trainer |
| Red Linen Bag | 8 | Tailoring | Pattern: Red Linen Bag, Tailoring 50 |
| Woolen Bag | 8 | Tailoring | Trainer |
| Small Silk Pack | 10 | Tailoring | Trainer |
| Mageweave Bag | 12 | Tailoring | Trainer |
| Runecloth Bag | 14 | Tailoring | Pattern: Runecloth Bag, Tailoring 215 |
| Mooncloth Bag | 18 | Tailoring | Pattern: Mooncloth Bag, Tailoring 255 |
| Bottomless Bag | 20 | Tailoring | Pattern: Bottomless Bag, Tailoring 300 |
| Kodo Hide Bag | 6 | Leatherworking | Pattern: Kodo Hide Bag, Leatherworking 35 |
The Small Silk Pack is the bag most players carry through the middle levels, and it also needs Heavy Leather, so a Tailor with a Leatherworker friend or alt has an easy time. Forever also adds reagent bags, such as the Linen Reagent Bag, that hold crafting materials only. They are worth it for gatherers and crafters, but they do not replace normal bags.
Our WoW Forever Tailoring guide covers the full route to 300 and where to farm cloth for each bag.
If you would rather not level Tailoring yourself, our WoW Forever professions boost takes it to 300 skill with the recipes unlocked, so every bag in this table is open to you.
Two classic bag drops are worth knowing for the late levels. Neither binds on pickup, so both are common on the Auction House.
At level 60 a Mooncloth Bag or Bottomless Bag from a Tailor is the reliable endgame choice.
You do not need every bag on this list. This plan fills all four bag slots with the least effort at each stage:
If you level several characters, one Tailor can supply the whole roster, since every recipe makes two bags. Our WoW Forever alt leveling guide shows how to share materials and bags between alts.
These are the questions players ask most often about bags.
The Bottomless Bag with 20 slots, made by a Tailor with 300 skill. The largest drop is the 16-slot Traveler's Backpack.
The Spidersilk Pouch for Horde, with 12 slots at level 23 or higher. For both factions, the 10-slot bags from Wailing Caverns are the best before level 25.
Yes. The quest bags bind when picked up, while the colored pouches that drop from mobs can be traded.
