WoW Forever Gold Making Guide

Updated 21 Oct 2026 | Author: Dmitro | ~12 min

Every WoW Forever character starts on November 4 with empty pockets, and nothing from the beta carries over. Gold matters sooner than many players expect: riding training at level 40 is the first big bill, and the one at 60 is ten times bigger. Blizzard also rebuilt the economy around the old tricks. Crafted items now sell to vendors for far less than in Classic, a black-market vendor caps the price of the rarest materials, and a new crate system turns ordinary herbs, ore and cloth into a currency for recipes. Below, we cover which professions actually pay, how to make gold in your first days, how Waylaid Crates and Merchant's Favor work, the Auction House habits that pay off, what you will spend your gold on, and the mistakes that cost beta players the most.

How the WoW Forever Economy Works at Launch

Forever doesn't use realms. You pick a ruleset, and Blizzard describes each one as "a broad player ecosystem" rather than a traditional server, so your market is every player on your ruleset in your region. That means far more sellers than on any Classic realm, and a price gap that would last a week on a small server closes within hours here.

Three design decisions shape how gold works, and all three were tested and adjusted during the beta:

Change What it means for gold
Crafted items sell to vendors for less The Classic vendor shuffles are gone. On October 1, crafted wands dropped to 1 copper at vendors, and the October 8 price list set the Lesser Magic Wand at 1s 10c and the Greater Magic Wand at 2s. The October 15 build cut the vendor price of many other profession items too.
A black-market vendor sells the rarest materials Mister Graphed in Riverglades sells top-end materials such as Black Lotus and Arcane Crystal at a fixed price with no purchase limit, which puts a ceiling on what they can cost on the Auction House.
Gold buying is policed hard Blizzard actions buyers as well as sellers and can freeze trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House on suspicious accounts while it investigates.

Some farms were cut before launch, too. Blizzard weakened Cone of Cold, Arcane Concentration and Improved Blizzard because mages were AoE-farming instances fast enough to flood the market.

Best Gold Making Professions in WoW Forever

There is no single best profession for gold. Gathering pays from the first hour, while crafting pays from the first week, once enough players need what you make. WoW Forever adds more than 600 new recipes, and many of them use materials that Classic barely touched, so gatherers sell into a hungrier market than before.

Professions also have character-level gates. Apprentice has no level requirement, Journeyman needs level 10, Expert needs level 20 and Artisan needs level 35, which matters if you plan to put crafts on an alt.

Gathering Professions

  • Skinning is the cheapest start: training costs 10 copper, a Skinning Knife costs about 10 copper, and every beast you kill can be skinned. Pristine Leather, a new Scarce material, goes into 126 recipes, and Forever builds far more of its crafting around leather than Classic did.
  • Herbalism feeds Alchemy, Cooking and First Aid, which now makes the healing potions. New herbs such as Death Lotus appear at the top end, and herb nodes can drop seeds and Scarce materials alongside the herb.
  • Mining sells bars as well as ore. Thorium Bar goes into 131 recipes in Forever, and the new Azerothium Bar and Heavy Thorium Bar feed the endgame crafts.
  • Fishing has no competition for nodes and pairs with Cooking. The Luremaster Legacy perk adds a chance to catch extra fish.

The Bountiful Harvest Legacy perk raises your chance of finding Scarce materials when you mine, pick herbs or skin, which makes it a strong first perk for a gathering main.

Crafting Professions That Sell

The table sums up where each crafting profession earns its gold. Most of the armor and weapons from the new reputation recipes bind on pickup, so the money in crafting comes from consumables, bags, enchants and materials rather than from gear you sell.

Profession Where the gold comes from When it pays
Enchanting Disenchant greens into dust and essences, and sell enchants to other players for tips From the first week; rare formulas pay most at 60
Tailoring Bags for every player who runs out of space, and cloth items for disenchanting From day one
Alchemy Elixirs, flasks and reagents for new recipes; healing potions moved to First Aid Grows toward the December raids
Leatherworking Armor kits and the Camp Tent, which tops up rested XP for everyone nearby Steady while players level
Blacksmithing Sharpening and weight stones, plus rare plans at 60 Expensive to level, strong late
Engineering Explosives and devices for raids Mostly a gold sink until 60

Which Pair to Pick

Creators who tested the beta economy disagree here, so pick by how you play rather than by a ranking.

  • Two gathering professions suit a main who wants to level fast and still earn. You never stop to craft, and everything sells or goes to a vendor.
  • One gathering and one crafting profession let you feed your own craft, for example Herbalism with Alchemy or Skinning with Leatherworking.
  • Gathering on your main, crafting on alts gives you the most gold over time. Crafts on alts also earn Legacy Points at 150, 225 and 300 skill, and an alt needs level 35 for Artisan.

Recipes, trainers and the camp object for each profession are covered in our WoW Forever professions guide.

How to Make Gold in Your First Days

The first week is when the market is least settled, so small habits matter more than any single farm. These are the ones that paid off on the beta.

  1. Learn Skinning in your starting zone and skin everything. Sell Ruined Leather Scraps to a vendor in the first levels, then keep Light Leather once it starts dropping.
  2. Check the vendor price before you list. In the first days many materials sell for little more than their vendor price. If an item doesn't clear its vendor value plus the deposit, sell it to the vendor.
  3. Keep half of your materials. On the beta, prices climbed day by day as more players reached the levels that need them, so vendor or list half and mail the rest to an alt.
  4. Sell bags and wands to players, not vendors. A Linen Bag needs only Tailoring 5, three Bolt of Linen Cloth and three Coarse Thread. Casters want a Lesser Magic Wand in the first levels, and posting one in a starting zone pays far more than its 1s 10c vendor price.
  5. Hold on to every Waylaid Crate you loot. Beta players sold them for a silver or two in the first days, while players who waited later got 15 to 49 silver each.
  6. Park a bank alt next to the Auction House and a mailbox. A level 1 character can do it, and it lets you post and relist while your main is out leveling.

When you mail an alt, type its full two-part name. Mail sent to the first name alone can land on someone else's character.

The full day-one routine, from your first bag to your first campfire, is in our WoW Forever launch day checklist.

Waylaid Crates and Merchant's Favor

Waylaid Crates are WoW Forever's new profession supply orders, and they are the closest thing the game has to a gold engine for gatherers. A Waylaid Crate drops at random from world mobs. When you read its label, it turns into one of 30 crate types, each asking for one bundle of materials: an Apprentice Ore crate, for example, takes 20 Copper Ore or 20 Tin Ore. Fill it, and you get a sealed crate that you hand to your faction's trade representative for Merchant's Favor.

Merchant's Favor is a profession currency, not gold. It buys recipes, many of them bound on pickup, plus rewards such as the Reins of the Pack Kodo, a level 60 mount that costs 6,000 Favor. The Alliance hands crates to Marcy Baker of the Azeroth Commerce Authority in Redridge, and the Horde to Dokimi of Durotar Supply and Logistics outside the Crossroads.

Each crate tier pays a set amount of Favor, and the crafted version of a crate pays double:

Crate tier Level to open Merchant's Favor (raw / crafted)
Apprentice 10 5 / 10
Journeyman 10 10 / 20
Expert 20 15 / 30
Artisan 35 Not announced yet

Your first sealed crate also starts a Shipping Label quest worth 50 Favor, 2,000 reputation and some experience.

Gold enters the picture in three places. Unfilled crates are not soulbound, so they sell on the Auction House. The bundles that fill them, from 20 herbs to 20 bars, sell to players who want Favor. And the Performance Bonus Legacy perk sometimes doubles the Favor from a turn-in, which makes every crate you fill yourself worth more.

To find the cheapest crate to fill, add the crate's price to the cost of the cheapest bundle, then divide by the Favor it pays. On the beta, a Journeyman Parts crate filled with self-made Bronze Framework came to about 2.8 silver per Favor.

Every recipe, reputation level and Favor price is listed in our WoW Forever Azeroth Commerce Authority reputation guide.

Auction House Tips for WoW Forever

The Auction House rewards patience more than speed in Forever, because a megaserver market corrects mistakes within hours. These habits worked on the beta.

  • Sell to the pack's level. In the first weeks most players are under 30, so bags, wands and low-level materials move. Level 60 materials listed in week one mostly sit there.
  • Buy below disenchant value. An enchanter can buy greens priced under the dust and essences they break into, then sell the materials.
  • Post before raid nights. The first raids open on December 9, and flasks, potions and food sell best in the hours before groups form.
  • Undercut by a little, not a lot. A price far below the market gets bought and relisted by someone else within minutes.
  • Keep savings off your main. A misclick on an expensive listing is easy to make, and a bank alt holding most of your gold can't make it.

Don't trust the costs an Auction House addon shows for vendor-sold reagents. Some addons price a reagent at its Auction House value even when a vendor sells it for a fraction of that, which makes a profitable craft look like a loss.

What You Will Spend Gold On

Riding is the biggest expense on the way to 60. Forever moved the cost of a mount into riding training, Burning Crusade style, so you pay the trainer and get your first mount for free.

Expense Cost When
Apprentice Riding 100 gold, first mount included Level 40
Journeyman Riding 1,000 gold, first epic mount included Level 60
Gift of Galloping 150 gold for +10% mounted speed for 360 hours of play Level 60
Gathering training 10c, 5s, 50s and 5g for the four ranks As your skill grows
Talent and Legacy respecs Rising with each reset on live servers Whenever you change your build

Two Legacy perks lower these bills. Bartering cuts the price of everything you buy from vendors by up to 10%, though since the October 15 build it no longer applies to training and repairs. Frequent Flier makes flight paths cheaper and faster.

Every mount, with its level and price, is in our WoW Forever mounts guide. If you'd rather spend your evenings leveling than farming, you can also buy WoW Forever gold.

Gold Making Mistakes to Avoid

Most of these cost beta players real gold, and a few of them cost their accounts.

  1. Crafting to vendor the result. Wands, oils and many crafted items now sell to vendors for a fraction of their Classic value. Videos built on those shuffles were recorded before the October patches.
  2. Selling Waylaid Crates for silver. Their value rises once players start chasing Merchant's Favor recipes.
  3. Dumping all your materials on day one. Half now, half later beats either extreme.
  4. Buying leveling gear on the Auction House. Quest rewards replace it within a few levels. Save for bags and riding instead.
  5. Out-leveling your gathering skill. If your Herbalism falls behind the zone, you walk past every node until you go back.
  6. Leveling a crafting profession you won't use. Training, recipes and materials all cost gold, and an unused craft pays none of it back.
  7. Building a plan on an exploit. A rogue chest loop in Scarlet Monastery made the rounds on the beta and was hotfixed within days.
  8. Accepting gold from strangers. Blizzard can action the receiving account too, even if you didn't pay for it.

WoW Forever Gold Making FAQ

These are the questions players ask most often about gold in WoW Forever.

What is the best profession for making gold in WoW Forever?

For a leveling main, Skinning plus Herbalism earns the most with the least effort. Over time, Enchanting and Alchemy on an alt fed by a gatherer earn more.

How much gold do I need for a mount in WoW Forever?

100 gold at level 40 for Apprentice Riding and 1,000 gold at level 60 for Journeyman Riding. The training includes your first mount at each tier.

Can I still vendor crafted items for profit?

Mostly no. Blizzard lowered the vendor price of crafted wands and many other profession items during the beta, so craft for players rather than for vendors.

What are Waylaid Crates in WoW Forever?

Random world drops that you fill with a bundle of materials and turn in for Merchant's Favor, a currency for profession recipes. Unfilled crates can be sold on the Auction House.

Is there a gold cap in WoW Forever?

Blizzard hasn't announced one.

Can I get banned for receiving gold in WoW Forever?

Yes, if the gold comes from real-money trading. Blizzard removes illicit gold from the recipient and can suspend or close the account, and it may restrict trade, mail and the Auction House while it investigates.

Can a level 1 character craft?

Yes, up to the Apprentice rank. Journeyman needs level 10, Expert level 20 and Artisan level 35.
