WoW Forever brings transmog to year-one Azeroth, but on its own terms. The system is optional: you can collect appearances and dress your character in saved outfits, or switch transmog off and see every player in the gear they actually wear. Appearances are shared across your account, every quest reward unlocks all of its choices, and green and blue dungeon drops unlock for the whole party, so nobody has to roll on loot just for the look.
Blizzard also kept a few Classic-minded limits: plate stays plate, cloth stays cloth, and high-level looks wait until level 60. As of the October 15 beta build there are only three transmogrifiers in the world, two for the Alliance and one for the Horde. Below you will find where each one stands, how every type of item unlocks its appearance, what outfit slots cost, how Situations swap your look automatically and how to turn the whole system off.
Transmog changes how your gear looks without touching its stats. WoW Forever uses the modern slot-based system: you transmog a slot, not an item. If you give your chest slot a look and later equip a new chest piece of the same armor type, the slot keeps the same appearance, so leveling upgrades do not break your outfit.
Every look you build is saved in an outfit. Saving changes to an outfit costs a small amount of money at a transmogrifier, while switching between saved outfits is free and works anywhere in the world. The table below sums up the basics.
| Feature | How It Works in WoW Forever |
|---|---|
| System | Optional, turned on or off at any transmogrifier |
| What you transmog | Slots, not individual items |
| Collection | Account-wide, keeps growing even with transmog off |
| Armor types | Must match: cloth to cloth, leather to leather, mail to mail, plate to plate |
| Level limit | The item's level requirement applies until level 60 |
| Outfit slots | 2 free, more for gold, shared by the whole account |
| Switching outfits | Free, anywhere |
| Collections window | Shift+P by default |
Collections are shared between the Normal, PvP and Roleplaying rulesets. Hardcore is the exception: appearances earned there carry over to the other rulesets, but nothing flows back into Hardcore. We compare all four rulesets in our WoW Forever Normal vs PvP ruleset guide.
WoW Forever has no Ethereal transmogrifiers from retail. The job goes to three regular NPCs in the cities, and as of the October 15 beta build that is the full list: two for the Alliance and one for the Horde. You need to visit one of them to save an outfit or to turn the system on or off.
| Transmogrifier | City | Faction | Location | Coordinates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fyrenz Vishonar | Stormwind City | Alliance | Mage Quarter, behind the mage tower | 48.0, 84.5 |
| Mon'ye | Orgrimmar | Horde | Cleft of Shadow, next to the barber shop | 46.2, 53.5 |
| Spellweaver Thaldris | Dalaran, Alterac Mountains | Alliance | Talismanic Textiles shop | 17.8, 60.5 |
Fyrenz Vishonar stands in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City, on the ground behind the mage tower, on the side away from the stairs. This is the easiest transmogrifier to reach for most Alliance players, since the city is the main Alliance hub.
Mon'ye is the only transmogrifier the Horde has. Look for this NPC in the Cleft of Shadow in Orgrimmar, on the upper level, right next to the barber shop.
The Horde has a single transmogrifier. Every outfit change you want to save means a trip to Orgrimmar, so plan several outfits in one visit.
Dalaran is back in the Alterac Mountains, just northwest of Southshore. Spellweaver Thaldris works inside the Talismanic Textiles tailoring shop. The city is marked as a sanctuary, but Horde players are attacked inside its walls, so in practice this transmogrifier is for the Alliance only. You can walk in up the staircase north of Hillsbrad Fields in Hillsbrad Foothills, and there is a portal to Stormwind inside the Violet Citadel.
Dalaran also hides one of the new dungeons. To unlock it, follow our WoW Forever Dalaran attunement guide.
No, not as of the October 15 beta build. One tester reported a transmogrifier in Undercity in the first days of the beta, but neither the game data nor later beta reports confirm it. Horde players from Undercity have to take the zeppelin from Tirisfal Glades to Orgrimmar.
You collect appearances simply by playing. Every appearance you unlock is added to your account, so a piece of mail looted by your Warlock is ready for your Hunter or Shaman later. The system was built to remove any reason to ninja loot for looks, and the rules depend on the item's quality and where it drops.
| Item Type | When the Appearance Unlocks | Who Gets It |
|---|---|---|
| Poor and Common items | As soon as you loot them | You, and every player you trade the item to |
| Bind on Equip items of any quality | When the item becomes soulbound or when you sell it to a vendor | You |
| Quest rewards | When you complete the quest, for every reward choice | You |
| Uncommon and Rare Bind on Pickup dungeon drops | When the item is looted | Every eligible party member, whoever wins the roll |
| Epic items and raid drops | When the item binds to you | Only the player who gets the item |
A few habits fill your collection without extra farming.
Keep in mind that your collection only shows what you have already collected. You cannot browse uncollected appearances or preview raid sets before you earn them.
Tier sets are raid Epics, so every piece unlocks only for the player who gets it. We list all 18 class sets and how to get each piece in our WoW Forever tier sets guide.
Blizzard said cosmetic-only items would be rare in WoW Forever, and so far they are mostly head items from the goblin reputation vendors. They have no stats, and every class can use their look regardless of armor type. Per beta data, these are the five found so far.
| Cosmetic Item | Where to Buy |
|---|---|
| Barrens Headband | Ratchet, The Barrens |
| Tough Guy's Eyepatch | Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale |
| Stolen Wastewander Cowl | Gadgetzan, Tanaris, at Revered reputation |
| Fizzbolt's Fashionable Fedora | Everlook, Winterspring |
| Haughty Fellow's Monocle | Goblin outpost in the Riverglades |
An appearance in your collection is not usable on every character. WoW Forever adds limits that retail does not have, and they decide which looks show up for a given slot.
Transmog in WoW Forever is built around outfits. An outfit stores a look for every slot, and you can give it a name of up to 16 characters and an icon. Saving it at a transmogrifier costs a little money: on the beta, an outfit with several changed pieces cost under 4 silver at low level. After that you can switch between outfits for free, anywhere, and even drag them onto your action bar.
Every account starts with two free outfit slots. More can be bought at the transmogrifier, and each purchase unlocks the slot for your whole account. The first slots cost only silver, but the price climbs fast: buying every slot costs a little over 2,000 gold. The prices below come from the beta and may change before launch.
| Outfit Slot | Cost |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | Free |
| 3-4 | 10 silver each |
| 5 | 20 silver |
| 6 | 35 silver |
| 7 | 50 silver |
| 8 | 1 gold |
| 9 | 2 gold |
| 10 | 3 gold 50 silver |
| 11 | 5 gold |
| 12-16 | 10 gold each |
| 17-21 | 20 gold each |
| 22-31 | 35 gold each |
| 32-41 | 50 gold each |
| 42-51 | 100 gold each |
Most players will never need more than a handful. Slots 3 to 7 cost 1 gold 25 silver together, which covers a leveling look, a city outfit and a few Situations.
Because armor types must match, a single outfit can hold a separate look for each armor type your class can wear. A Shaman can set up both a leather and a cloth chest in the same outfit, and the game picks the right one depending on what is equipped. This matters while leveling and for hybrids: a Hunter's best pieces before raids are often leather, even though the class wears mail, and the outfit keeps looking the same either way.
Any armor slot can be hidden, so you can drop a helm, cloak or shoulders from your look. Clearing a slot back to its equipped item is free. Above the character model you will also find three options: Hide Ignored Slots, Sheathe Weapon and View Ranged Weapon. A drop-down under the item list lets you carry a sheathed weapon at your side, on your back or keep it hidden.
The Custom Sets tab saves complete looks without using up a paid outfit slot. Use it to store ideas and finished sets, then load one into an outfit when you want to wear it.
Situations swap your outfit automatically. On the Situations tab you choose when an outfit should go on by itself: in a certain place, while swimming or mounted, in rain or snow, or at a certain time of day.
| Situation | Options |
|---|---|
| Locations | Rest Area, Character Select, World, Dungeons, Raids, Arenas, Battlegrounds |
| Movement | Unmounted, Swimming, Ground Mount, Flying Mount |
| Equipment Sets | Any of your saved equipment sets |
| Weather | Clear, Rain, Snow, Sand |
| Time of Day | Morning, Midday, Evening, Night |
An outfit switches on only when all of its conditions are met. If several outfits fit at the same moment, the game picks one of them at random, so give each outfit its own clear condition.
A simple setup that works well: a swimsuit look for Movement: Swimming, a lighter outfit for Weather: Sand in the deserts, and a nightwear outfit for Time of Day: Night in Rest Areas.
If you picked the Classic preset when you first launched the game, transmog is already off. Either way, you can turn it on or off for free at any transmogrifier: talk to the NPC and choose the option to enable or disable transmogrification. Turning it off does not affect anything else in the game.
Here is what changes when the system is off.
To stay fully out of the system, simply never save an outfit: everyone will then see your real gear. Turning transmog off also helps in PvP, where you can read an enemy's real gear at a glance.

The questions below cover the most common transmog searches: transmogrifier locations, the toggle, collection rules and costs.
Yes. Transmog is optional: you can use it at a transmogrifier in Stormwind, Orgrimmar or Dalaran, or turn the whole system off and see everyone in their real gear.
Fyrenz Vishonar stands in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City, behind the mage tower, at 48.0, 84.5.
No. Horde players are attacked inside Dalaran, so Spellweaver Thaldris is available to the Alliance only.
No. Armor type must match: plate to plate, cloth to cloth. Only cosmetic-only items ignore armor type.
Yes for green and blue Bind on Pickup items: every eligible party member gets the appearance, whoever wins the item. Epic and raid drops unlock only for the player who gets them.
Yes. Appearances keep unlocking while the system is off, so your collection is ready if you turn transmog on later.
Saving an outfit costs a small amount, a few silver at low level on the beta. Switching between saved outfits is free. Extra outfit slots start at 10 silver and go up to 100 gold each.
Only one way. Appearances earned in Hardcore become available in the other rulesets, but appearances from Normal, PvP or Roleplaying do not carry into Hardcore.
These guides go deeper into the systems around transmog.
