Rogues level faster in Forever than they ever did in Classic, mostly thanks to changes you only notice once you play. Energy now regenerates continuously instead of in 2-second ticks, combo points stay on a target when you switch to another, poisons scale with Attack Power and last longer, and Rogues can finally use axes. Combat is still the most reliable way to 60, while a reworked Subtlety tree with Hemorrhage and Ghostly Strike has become a real alternative for players who like opening from stealth.
Below, we explain which spec to pick, give ready talent builds for our calculator, and cover the rotation, the weapon swap trick for Ambush, poisons, races, professions and camping, Legacy talents and dungeons for both factions. Levels 1–30 are tested on the beta, which is capped at 30; levels 31–60 follow beta data and will be updated after the November 4 launch.
Every Rogue spec builds combo points and spends them on finishers, so the choice comes down to how you want to start a fight: face to face with any weapon, or from stealth with daggers.
| Spec | Weapons | Best for | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Combat | Any one-handers, slow main hand | Solo questing, most players | Riposte early, Blade Flurry for two mobs, works with every weapon type | Simple rotation that relies on weapon upgrades |
| Subtlety | Daggers or any weapon with Hemorrhage | Players who enjoy stealth openers and dungeons | Big Garrote and Ambush openers, Ghostly Strike and Setup for defense | Weaker until Hemorrhage at 30 |
| Assassination | Daggers | Group content later in the game | Mutilate and stronger poisons | Back-loaded: weak before Mutilate and Seal Fate |
Our recommendation: level as Combat. It is strong from the first talent point, needs no specific weapon type, and handles two mobs at once with Blade Flurry. Pick Subtlety with Hemorrhage if you prefer opening from stealth, and leave Assassination for level 60, when Mutilate and Seal Fate come together.
Rogue Leveling Builds
Pick a build to open it in the talent calculator
Combat Build: Levels 10–30
Any weapons · Solo questing
This build goes straight down the Combat tree: Improved Sinister Strike and Improved Eviscerate first, then Precision and Deflection for Riposte, Endurance for shorter Sprint and Evasion cooldowns, and finally Blade Flurry at 30.
Combat Rogue, level 30
The talents that carry it:
Combat Build: Levels 31–60
Full Combat with Assassination talents · Follows beta data
Past 30 you finish Dual Wield Specialization, Hack and Slash (which merges all weapon specializations into one talent), Weapon Expertise, Aggression and Adrenaline Rush, then spend the rest in Assassination for Malice, Lethality, Relentless Strikes and Cold Blood. This part follows beta data and will be checked after launch.
Combat Rogue, level 60
Subtlety Hemorrhage Build: Levels 10–30
Stealth openers · Daggers or any weapon
If you prefer to open every fight from stealth, this Subtlety build gets Opportunity and Camouflage for stronger, faster openers, Setup and Ghostly Strike for defense, Initiative and Premeditation for free combo points, and Hemorrhage at 30, which works with any weapon and boosts Rupture. Open with Garrote, which hits harder than most players expect, then Hemorrhage and a full Rupture.
Subtlety Rogue, level 30
Two engine changes make the Forever Rogue feel smoother. Energy now regenerates continuously, so a 45-energy Sinister Strike is ready about 4.25 seconds after the last one instead of waiting for a third 2-second tick. And combo points no longer vanish when you switch targets: build two on one mob, tab to another, and they are still there for your finisher.
While questing, Slice and Dice is worth more than Eviscerate. Most of your damage still comes from auto-attacks with two weapons, and Slice and Dice speeds all of them up.
On a normal pull, go through this order:
A simple macro saves a key: put Riposte and Sinister Strike on one button, so it uses Riposte when available and Sinister Strike otherwise.
#showtooltip Sinister Strike /startattack /cast Riposte /cast Sinister Strike
Rogues have no self-healing, so the trick is to avoid damage instead of recovering from it. Gouge incapacitates a mob long enough to start a bandage, Evasion turns a two-mob fight into a safe one, and Vanish takes you out of combat when everything else fails. Remember that damage taken while stealthed breaks stealth.
Weapons are the biggest upgrade a Rogue gets while leveling, and Forever widens your options: Rogues can now use axes, and the Combat talent Hack and Slash merges every weapon specialization into one, so you can use whatever drops without respeccing.
Put the weapon with the highest top-end damage in your main hand, because Sinister Strike, Backstab and Ambush scale with it. The off hand deals 50% damage anyway, so a fast off-hand weapon is better: it swings more often and applies more poison.
Ambush and Backstab need a dagger in the main hand, but your best main hand is often a sword or axe. Experienced Rogues keep both and swap with macros: open with Ambush using a dagger, then swap to the slow weapon for Sinister Strike. Each macro equips the right weapon in slot 16 (main hand) and 17 (off hand) and then casts the ability. A swap triggers the global cooldown and resets your swing timer, so press the macro twice.
#showtooltip Ambush /equipslot 16 [your dagger] /equipslot 17 [your sword] /cast Ambush
Do not add /startattack to the Backstab or Ambush macro: an auto-attack can break Gouge or your stealth before the opener lands.
Three Rogue class quests give free gear on the way. At level 10 the class quest rewards a strong early weapon; at 20 you get the Pyrewood Signet Ring; and at 30 the Ruby-Adorned Blade. If you clear The Deadmines, roll for Cruel Barb from Edwin VanCleef.
Poisons unlock at level 20 and work differently in Forever: they use charges instead of a timer, last longer, scale with Attack Power, can crit, and stack with Sharpening Stones and Windfury. Use Instant Poison while leveling; Deadly Poison only pays off in long fights.
For stats, Agility comes first, then Strength or Attack Power, then Stamina. A little Spirit helps regeneration between pulls; Intellect does nothing for you.
Nine races can be Rogues in Forever, including both sides of the Skyborne. Racials make less difference than weapons, so pick the one you enjoy; if you want the strongest option, these are the standouts.
| Race | Faction | Key racials for a Rogue | Why it helps while leveling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury, Axe Specialization, Hardiness | 10% Attack Power on demand, and axes are now Rogue weapons |
| Undead | Horde | Touch of the Grave, Cannibalize, Will of the Forsaken | Attacks drain health, and Cannibalize heals between pulls; the closest thing to self-healing a Rogue gets |
| Troll | Horde | Rapid Regeneration, Berserking | Heals 50% of your health over 6 seconds out of combat |
| Human | Alliance | Sword Specialization, Will to Survive | 2% crit with swords for Combat |
| Night Elf | Alliance | Elune's Light, Quickness, Shadowmeld | 10% crit for 15 seconds and 2% movement speed |
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka!, Expansive Mind, Escape Artist | Cheaper, stronger abilities and 5 extra maximum energy |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform, Mace Specialization | Removes bleeds and poisons and reduces physical damage |
On a PvP realm, Gnome's Escape Artist and Orc's Hardiness pull ahead of the others.
Forever keeps the Classic experience curve but pushes players into the open world. Since the October 1 beta build, dungeon quests give half their old bonus experience, and dungeon mobs give far less than in Classic even after the 20% increase on October 8. Low-level mobs were trimmed on purpose too, so once a zone turns green, move on. Stealth helps here: you can walk past whole camps to the one named mob a quest needs.
| Levels | Horde | Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Durotar, Tirisfal Glades or Zephras Isle | Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil or Zephras Isle |
| 10–20 | The Barrens, Silverpine Forest | Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore |
| 20–30 | Stonetalon Mountains, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills | Redridge Mountains, Duskwood, Wetlands, Ashenvale |
| 30–40 | Thousand Needles, Desolace, Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale | Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Stranglethorn Vale |
| 35–45 | Riverglades (new in Forever) | Riverglades (new in Forever) |
| 40–50 | Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Badlands | Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Badlands |

Run each dungeon once for its quests and weapons: Ragefire Chasm or The Deadmines (Cruel Barb), the new Ruins of Lordaeron, Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps, and the new Excavation Site and City of Dalaran in the late 20s. Our WoW Forever dungeons overview lists every dungeon with its level range.
If your schedule does not leave room for a full climb, our WoW Forever leveling service can take a Rogue to 60 while you focus on the endgame.
Every crafting profession awards a Legacy point at 150, 225 and 300 skill. For a Rogue, these are the ones that pay off while leveling:
Our WoW Forever professions guide covers every recipe path from 1 to 300.
Camping ties your professions together: each one lets you place a campsite item with a buff that everyone at the camp shares, up to three items per site. While leveling, look for the Camp Chair from Skinning, the Fish Bowl from Fishing and the Lodestone from Mining. Leatherworking's Camp Tent adds 5% rested experience instead. Ask a friendly Miner to drop a Lodestone if you do not mine yourself.
Thrill of Adventure is the best first pick: Rogues have no self-healing, and at 5/5 every non-trivial kill outside dungeons, raids and battlegrounds restores 5% of your health over 10 seconds. On an alt, Talented lets you reach Riposte and Blade Flurry several levels earlier.
We explain where every Legacy point comes from in our WoW Forever Legacy Points guide.
Rogues bring high single-target damage and control to a group:
A few habits from the beta make the climb noticeably faster:
These are the questions players ask most often about leveling a Rogue in Forever.
What is the best Rogue spec for leveling in WoW Forever? Combat for most players. Subtlety with Hemorrhage is a strong alternative if you like stealth openers, while Assassination only comes together near 60.
Can Rogues use axes in WoW Forever? Yes. Axes are now Rogue weapons, and Hack and Slash makes every weapon type equally good for Combat.
Do combo points reset when I change targets? No. In Forever they stay on the target you built them on, so you can switch and come back without losing them.
Which poison should I use while leveling? Instant Poison on both weapons. Poisons now use charges, last longer and scale with Attack Power; Deadly Poison is only better in long fights.
Do I need daggers to level a Rogue? No. Combat and Hemorrhage work with any weapon. Daggers matter for Ambush, Backstab and Mutilate, and a weapon swap macro lets you open with a dagger and fight with a sword or axe.
