Every Shaman in WoW Forever earns four totems through class quests: the Earth Totem at level 4, the Fire Totem at 10, the Water Totem at 20 and the Air Totem at 30. Orc, Tauren and Troll Shamans run the same chains as in Classic, but the two new Shaman races do not: Dwarves get four brand-new quest lines through Dun Morogh, Loch Modan, the Wetlands and Westfall, and Windshaper Skyborne earn their first totems on Zephras Isle. Every Call of Fire now also rewards a new relic, the Totem of Charged Flames, and the short Call of Air opens the level 30 quest for Rage of the Storm. Below you will find every version step by step with the quest givers, the mobs to kill and maps of each stop, how totems work in Forever, and what is still missing from the beta data before launch on November 4.
Five races can play a Shaman in Forever. The Horde has Orcs, Tauren, Trolls and Windshaper Skyborne, and the Alliance has only Dwarves. All of them unlock the same four totems at the same levels, but each race starts its chain with a different quest giver, and the Dwarf and Skyborne quests are new to Forever.
Your class trainer points you to the right quest giver once you reach the level, so you can also pick up each chain from any Shaman trainer in your capital. The table shows where each version really starts and what the last step teaches you.
| Totem | Level | Orc, Tauren and Troll | Dwarf | Windshaper Skyborne | You Learn |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth Totem | 4 | Canaga Earthcaller in Durotar or Seer Ravenfeather in Mulgore | Teo Hammerstorm in Dun Morogh | Windshaper Boro on Zephras Isle | Stoneskin Totem |
| Fire Totem | 10 | Kranal Fiss in The Barrens | Bruegs Kindleborn in Dun Morogh | Olariaan Swiftburn on Zephras Isle | Searing Totem and the Totem of Charged Flames relic |
| Water Totem | 20 | Islen Waterseer in The Barrens | Norric Lochthane in Loch Modan | Not in the beta data yet | Healing Stream Totem |
| Air Totem | 30 | Prate Cloudseer in Thousand Needles | Veyric Thunderhame in Arathi Highlands | Prate Cloudseer, per the quest text | No spell; opens the weapon quest |
The totem items are tools, not gear. Every totem spell of an element lists its item as a requirement: Stoneskin Totem needs the Earth Totem in your bags, Searing Totem needs the Fire Totem, and so on. Each item is unique and binds when picked up, so you carry one of each for the whole game. Skipping a totem quest locks you out of every totem of that element, even the ones you can train.
Forever keeps that rule but changes how you use the totems once you have them. These are the changes that matter while you level:
One rule still holds: Windfury Totem and Grace of Air Totem share the Air slot, so one Shaman drops one or the other. Their buffs stack on the raid, but you need two Shamans to run both. Totem looks also differ by race in the beta files: Dwarf and Skyborne Shamans have their own totem models, while Orcs, Tauren and Trolls keep the familiar ones.
Every spell by level, the weapon imbues and the three specs are covered in our WoW Forever Shaman guide. If you plan to raid, our WoW Forever raid buffs guide shows which totems reach the whole raid and how they stack with Paladin blessings.
Call of Earth is the first class quest every Shaman gets, and all four versions follow the same three steps. You bring your trainer a small item from nearby mobs, drink the Earth Sapta at a sacred spot to see a hidden earth spirit, then defeat it and carry the Rough Quartz back. The reward is the Earth Totem and your first totem spell, Stoneskin Totem.
Every step stays inside your starting zone, so you can finish Call of Earth before you move on to the next town.
Orc and Troll Shamans start in the Valley of Trials in Durotar, and the Classic chain is unchanged in Forever.
Tauren Shamans run the same chain from Camp Narache in Mulgore, also unchanged from Classic.
The Dwarf chain is new in Forever and starts at Anvilmar, the Dwarf starting area in Dun Morogh.
If you skip it at level 4, the quest comes back to you at level 10. Eldrun Stormbreaker in Ironforge or Ingrid Dunwald in Kharanos hands out a Call of Earth quest that sends you back to Teo.
Horde Skyborne start on Zephras Isle, and their Call of Earth opens at level 3. Every step also gives 50 reputation with the Windshapers.
If you lose the sapta before you use it, your quest giver hands out a replacement through a short Earth Sapta quest.
Call of Fire is the first totem quest that takes you out of your starting zone. The Horde and Dwarf versions share a plan: carry the Torch of the Dormant Flame to a fire shrine, collect Fire Tar and a Reagent Pouch for the Fire Sapta, defeat a fire spirit for its Glowing Ember and relight the torch. The Skyborne version is a separate story on Zephras Isle with a timed run at the end.
Every version rewards the Fire Totem, Searing Totem and the new Totem of Charged Flames relic.
Orc, Tauren and Troll Shamans run the Classic chain. Any Shaman trainer starts it: Searn Firewarder in Orgrimmar, Xanis Flameweaver in Thunder Bluff, Swart in Razor Hill or Narm Skychaser in Bloodhoof Village.
Expect a fair amount of walking between Durotar and The Barrens. Grab the Crossroads flight path while you are there.
The Dwarf chain is new and runs through Dun Morogh and Loch Modan. It follows the Horde plan, but its middle steps are quest level 14, four levels above the level you get it.
Beta players found the Dwarf version much harder than the Horde one: the kobolds and troggs are several levels above you, and some brought a friend for the drops. Heal up before you drop down into Bruegs' cave, because the fall damage can kill a low-health character.
The Skyborne chain is new and never leaves Zephras Isle. It has no Fire Sapta step; you fight two named enemies instead. Every step gives 25 reputation with the Windshapers.
Learn the route to Valanaar before you start the ritual and avoid pulling anything on the way. The prayer step gives you a run speed buff that helps on the timer. If you have already left the island, a short Call of Fire quest sends you back on the skycutter from Skywatcher Plateau in Mulgore.
Every Call of Fire now ends with an extra reward, the Totem of Charged Flames. It is a Shaman relic that goes into the relic slot and reduces the mana cost of Flame Shock and Lightning Bolt by 5 mana. At level 10 that is a real saving on your two main spells, so equip it as soon as you get it.
Skyborne can get the same relic earlier from the Zephras Isle quest Meddlesome Mages at level 4.
Call of Water is the longest class quest a Shaman does before level 30. Both versions send you across several zones to fill three waterskins at sacred waters, then use the Water Sapta to purify a corrupted water spirit. The reward is the Water Totem and Healing Stream Totem, plus 2,750 experience for the last step.
Plan for one to two hours of travel. Players in the beta described the Dwarf route as about two hours of running, and the Horde route as "one of the most travel-intensive" quests in the game.
Orc, Tauren and Troll Shamans run the Classic chain, unchanged in Forever. Pick it up from your Shaman trainer in Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Razor Hill or Bloodhoof Village.
The Dwarf chain is new in Forever and has nine quests across five zones. Eldrun Stormbreaker in Ironforge starts it with Call of Water.
One beta player counted the trips: "you run from Loch to wetlands to loch to wetlands to red ridge to wetlands to ashenvale to wetlands to loch to westfall to loch to wetlands." Learn the Menethil Harbor, Lakeshire, Auberdine and Sentinel Hill flight paths on your way through, and the later legs get much shorter.
If you would rather spend that time on dungeons than on travel, our WoW Forever Leveling service takes your Shaman to the level you need with the class quests done on the way.
The beta files have no Call of Water for Skyborne Shamans. The Horde chain above is flagged for Orc, Tauren and Troll only, and no Zephras Isle version has been found. The beta was capped at level 30, so this step was never tested. We will add the Skyborne route once it shows up after launch.
Call of Air is the shortest totem quest: one step, no mobs. Your trainer sends you to a single quest giver, who hands over the Air Totem on the spot. It teaches no spell, because your Air totems such as Grace of Air Totem and Windfury Totem come from the trainer. What makes it matter in Forever is what comes next.
| Version | Start | Go To | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orc, Tauren and Troll | Searn Firewarder in Orgrimmar (Call of Air) or Xanis Flameweaver in Thunder Bluff (Call of Air) | Prate Cloudseer in Thousand Needles, 53.6, 42.6 | 2,450 |
| Dwarf | Eldrun Stormbreaker in Ironforge (Call of Air) | Veyric Thunderhame in Arathi Highlands, 59.8, 27.5 | 2,450 |
| Windshaper Skyborne | Not in the beta data yet (Call of Air) | Prate Cloudseer, per the quest text | 2,750 and 35 silver |
The Horde quest is the Classic one. The Dwarf and Skyborne versions are new, and the Skyborne quest is level 35, though you can take it at 30. The Dwarf quest text calls its contact Veyric Thundervein, but the NPC in Arathi is named Veyric Thunderhame.
The quest giver at the end of Call of Air starts a new chain for a Shaman weapon. You kill Charlga Razorflank in Razorfen Kraul, farm 20 Twisted Totems in Dustwallow Marsh, Desolace, Swamp of Sorrows and the Badlands, survive the elite Heed My Call event in Thousand Needles, and pick one of three weapons from Bath'rah the Windwatcher in Alterac Mountains:
You also get the Elementalist's Guard shield whichever weapon you pick. The chain is built for a group of Shamans at level 30 to 35. Every step, the best farming spots for each totem and the elite fight are in our WoW Forever Shaman weapon quest guide.
Most of the time in these quests goes into travel and into fighting other Shamans for the same mobs. A few habits from the beta cut both down.
Everything in this guide comes from the Forever beta, which stopped at level 30, so a few pieces of the later quests are still missing. These are the gaps we will close after launch on November 4:
These guides pick up where the totem quests leave off, from your spells and talents to the level 30 weapon.
These are the questions players ask most about the totem quests and the totems themselves.
Yes, in practice. Every totem spell needs the matching totem item in your bags, so without the Earth Totem you cannot cast any Earth totem, even one you trained.
The Earth Totem at 4, the Fire Totem at 10, the Water Totem at 20 and the Air Totem at 30. The Skyborne Call of Earth opens one level earlier, at 3.
Yes. All four Dwarf quests are new in Forever and run through Dun Morogh, Loch Modan, the Wetlands, Redridge, Ashenvale, Westfall and Arathi. They follow the same pattern as the Horde chains, but the Dwarf Call of Fire is four levels harder than the level you get it.
Windshaper Skyborne earn the Earth Totem and Fire Totem on Zephras Isle. Their Call of Air is a new level 35 quest, and their Call of Water is not in the beta data yet.
Plan for one to two hours. Both versions cross several zones, so learn the flight paths on the way and use Ghost Wolf.
Yes, per the beta files. Dwarf and Skyborne Shamans have their own totem models, while Orcs, Tauren and Trolls keep the classic designs.
No. Windfury Totem and Grace of Air Totem are both Air totems, so one Shaman holds one of them. Their buffs stack, so a raid with two Shamans can run both.
Yes. The NPC at the end of Call of Air starts the level 30 chain that ends with Rage of the Storm, Lightning's Grasp or Tidebringer's Claw.
Not at launch. Dwarves are the only Alliance Shamans, and Alliance Skyborne can be Mages instead. Blizzard has said more race and class combinations are planned for future updates.
