Shadowfang Keep is the haunted castle of Silverpine Forest and the hardest dungeon most players see before level 30 in WoW Forever. The bosses keep their Classic mechanics, but several of them hit far harder: Archmage Arugal's Void Bolt now deals 1,399 Shadow damage instead of about 275, so the last fight is a real test for any group. The loot got the usual Forever treatment, with seven new items, unique effects on old favorites and the Black Tome, which unlocks a secret boss in the new City of Dalaran dungeon.
The dungeon is tuned for levels 22 to 30, and the group size is now five players instead of ten. Below you will find how to reach it from both factions, the quests worth picking up, everything that changed in Forever, a strategy for each boss, the best loot for each role and tips for a smooth run.
Shadowfang Keep stands on a cliff in Silverpine Forest, just north of Pyrewood Village. Horde players fly to The Sepulcher and ride south along the road, then west up to the castle gate. Non-Undead Horde characters can also take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Tirisfal Glades and ride south.
For Alliance the trip is long. The usual route is the boat from Stormwind to Auberdine, the boat on to Menethil Harbor and then on to Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills, followed by the road west into Silverpine Forest. Skyborne characters can take the Mage Tower teleport to Dalaran and cut through Ambermill instead.
Most Shadowfang Keep quests are Horde quests, given in The Sepulcher and the Undercity. The one to prioritize is Arugal Must Die, which sends you to the final boss and pays well. Deathstalkers in Shadowfang now lets you choose leather or mail shoulders next to the Ghostly Mantle, and The Book of Ur adds the new Tattered Mittens for cloth wearers. Class quests also lead here: Mages can turn the Blade of Silverlaine into the Coldflame Saber, Rogues earn the Pyrewood Signet Ring, and Horde Paladins collect an Enchanted Silver Ingot next to Arugal.
Every quest, where it starts and what it rewards is listed in our WoW Forever dungeon quests guide.
The castle, the boss order and the fights are the same as in Classic. What changed is how hard several bosses hit, the group size and almost every item.
Several abilities now deal several times their Classic damage. The last boss is the one to prepare for:
The group cap dropped from ten players to five, so you can no longer bring extra players to make the castle easier. The other mechanics are unchanged: Baron Silverlaine's Veil of Shadow still cuts healing on the tank, and the Wailing Guardsman still silences the group with Screams of the Past.
Six bosses received new rare items, each at around 1.5 to 2%:
| Item | Boss | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Cell Keeper's Claws | Rethilgore | Fist weapon with Attack Power and extra Attack Power against Humanoids |
| Sorcerer Collar | Rethilgore | Necklace with Intellect and Spirit that makes Silence effects 4% less likely to hit you |
| Blade of Silverlaine | Baron Silverlaine | Spell power sword; Mages can turn it into the Coldflame Saber |
| Worgenbane Talisman | Commander Springvale | Trinket that stuns a Worgen for 4 seconds |
| Blindwatcher's Sight | Odo the Blindwatcher | Helmet that makes Disorient effects 7% less likely to hit you |
| Half-Eaten Boots | Fenrus the Devourer | Mail boots with Strength and Nature Resistance but 100 less armor |
| Worgpelt Leggings | Wolf Master Nandos | Leather legs with Strength, Agility and Fire Resistance |
The Coldflame Saber is the most unusual reward here: a Mage-only sword whose melee attacks deal 98 extra Fire damage to frozen targets. The stables also drop new rare recipes for Tailoring, Leatherworking and Blacksmithing, and Commander Springvale can drop Blueprint: Toxin Study, a camp feature for First Aid.
Almost every Classic drop is back with new stats, and these picked up effects worth knowing:
| Item | Boss | New Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Silverlaine's Family Seal | Baron Silverlaine | 2% movement speed in Tirisfal Glades, Silverpine Forest and Shadowfang Keep |
| Baron's Scepter | Baron Silverlaine | Party members within 30 yards regenerate 4 health every 5 seconds |
| Rugged Spaulders | Rethilgore | Now blue, with bonus armor and 2 points in every resistance |
| Girdle of the Blindwatcher | Odo the Blindwatcher | Spell power and better stealth detection |
| Feline Mantle | Wolf Master Nandos | Spell power and reduced falling damage |
| Commander's Crest | Commander Springvale | Now restores 4 health every 5 seconds |
| Meteor Shard | Archmage Arugal | Its Fire blast now hits for 42 instead of 35 |
| Fel Steed Saddlebags | Fel Steed | The 10-slot bag now binds on pickup |
Many weapons moved toward casters. Odo's Ley Staff, Haunting Blade, Robes of Arugal, Belt of Arugal and Bloody Apron now carry spell power, while the Wolfmaster Cape swapped Agility for Attack Power with a bonus against Beasts. The rare Shadowfang sword now fires a 42-damage Shadow bolt instead of 30.
Shadowfang Keep has nine bosses and one rare. Most fights are simple; the danger is in the adds, the silences and the last boss.
Rethilgore waits in the prison cells with worgs around him. Pull two of them first, crowd control or kill the Bleak Worg, then turn to the boss. His Soul Drain roots and drains much more than before, so keep the target topped up. He drops Rugged Spaulders and the new Cell Keeper's Claws and Sorcerer Collar.
The three horses in the stables always pull together and hit hard, now with a stronger Fel Stomp. Crowd control one, let a pet or an off-tank hold the second, and kill the third before moving on. They drop the Fel Steed Saddlebags and the new crafting recipes.
Razorclaw the Butcher is a tank and spank fight once the kitchen and its patrols are cleared. He drops Bloody Apron, Butcher's Slicer and Butcher's Cleaver.
Baron Silverlaine uses Veil of Shadow, which cuts healing on his target by 75%. Hybrid classes should help the healer with tank heals. He drops Baron's Scepter, Silverlaine's Family Seal and the new Blade of Silverlaine.
Commander Springvale comes with a Haunted Servitor and a Wailing Guardsman. Kill the servitor first, pull the guardsman away from the group so its silence does not hit the healer, and interrupt Springvale's Holy Light. He drops Arced War Axe, Commander's Crest, the new Worgenbane Talisman and Blueprint: Toxin Study.
Odo the Blindwatcher pulls with two Vile Bat, which disarm and cleave, so face them away from the group and kill them first. Give the tank time to build threat before you burn Odo, because Howling Rage makes him hit faster as his health drops. He drops Odo's Ley Staff, Girdle of the Blindwatcher and the new Blindwatcher's Sight.
The Deathsworn Captain is a rare that does not always spawn. Tank him away from the group because of his cleave, and away from any Wailing Guardsman. He drops Haunting Blade and Phantom Armor.
Fenrus the Devourer is a tank and spank fight with Toxic Saliva, a damage over time effect the healer can handle. He drops Fenrus' Hide, Black Wolf Bracers and the new Half-Eaten Boots.
Kill the four worgs around Wolf Master Nandos before you pull him, and kill every worg he calls during the fight before you return to him. He drops Feline Mantle, Wolfmaster Cape and the new Worgpelt Leggings.
Archmage Arugal is the real test. He teleports around the room, curses players with Arugal's Curse and casts Void Bolt for 1,399 Shadow damage. Ranged players should stand on the raised platform as soon as they enter, so they can hit him wherever he teleports, and melee should wait there for him instead of chasing. Interrupt every Void Bolt you can and stay out of melee range when Thundershock is coming. He drops Robes of Arugal, Belt of Arugal and Meteor Shard. Do not leave without the Black Tome from his room.
The Black Tome lies in Archmage Arugal's room. Take it to the Ambermill Leyline Focus in Silverpine Forest to turn it into the Tome of Dalaran, then carry that into the new City of Dalaran dungeon to summon a secret boss. The full unlock is explained in our Lyn the Ignored guide.
Shadowfang Keep has an upgrade for almost every role in the mid 20s. These are the drops worth staying for:
| Role | Best Items |
|---|---|
| Tank | Commander's Crest, Black Wolf Bracers, Phantom Armor, Rugged Spaulders |
| Melee damage | Arced War Axe, Worgpelt Leggings, Wolfmaster Cape, Silverlaine's Family Seal |
| Caster damage | Blade of Silverlaine, Belt of Arugal, Meteor Shard, Coldflame Saber for Mages |
| Healer | Odo's Ley Staff, Robes of Arugal, Baron's Scepter |
These are the small things that save the most time and the most wipes:

These are the questions players ask most often about Shadowfang Keep.
Shadowfang Keep is tuned for levels 22 to 30. For Archmage Arugal, a group around level 24 or higher has a much easier time.
Yes. Void Bolt and Thundershock from Archmage Arugal hit about five times harder than in Classic, and the group is capped at five players.
The Black Tome becomes the Tome of Dalaran at the Ambermill Leyline Focus and summons a secret boss in City of Dalaran.
Seven new rare items, including the Worgenbane Talisman, the Blade of Silverlaine and the Worgpelt Leggings, plus new crafting recipes from the stables.
Yes, but the trip to Silverpine Forest is long and most quests are Horde. Alliance groups usually travel through Southshore or use the Dalaran teleport available to Skyborne.
