The Priest is still the class that almost never sits down to drink. Spirit Tap, Meditation and a wand let you finish mob after mob on a full mana bar, Power Word: Shield keeps you safe, and you can heal any dungeon you walk into, whatever your spec. Forever changes the details rather than the formula: wands no longer gain damage from spell power, Discipline gets the new Penance at level 30, Shadow gets a new Shadow Word: Death, and Shadow Word: Pain now tags a mob instantly when you are competing for it.
Below, we explain the leveling path that works best in Forever, give ready talent builds for our calculator, and cover the rotation, how to get your first wand on launch day, stats, races, professions, Legacy talents and dungeon healing for both factions. Levels 1–30 are tested on the beta, which is capped at 30; levels 31–60 follow beta data and will be updated after the November 4 launch.
Priests level in a hybrid of trees rather than a pure spec. Up to level 30 the strongest setup mixes Discipline mana talents with Spirit Tap from Shadow; from 40 you respec into full Shadow for Shadowform.
| Spec | Levels | Best for | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discipline and Shadow hybrid | 10–40 | Solo questing, most players | Wand Specialization, Spirit Tap and Meditation remove almost all drinking | Low burst; relies on keeping your wand up to date |
| Discipline with Penance | 30–40 | Players who also heal dungeons | Penance deals damage or heals and was a strong solo button on the beta | Penance was nerfed; costs the Spirit Tap points |
| Shadow | 40–60 | Solo questing late in the game | Shadowform, Mind Flay, Shadow Word: Death; can still heal dungeons | Needs 31 points to come online |
| Holy | Dungeon healing | Healing groups only | Strongest heals | Slowest solo leveling |
Our recommendation: take the hybrid build to 40, then respec into Shadow. If you heal a lot of dungeons in your 30s, try the Penance build at 30; respecs were cheap on the beta, so it costs little to test.
Priest Leveling Builds

Hybrid Build: Levels 10–30
Discipline and Shadow · Solo questing with a wand
The first two points go into Wand Specialization: your wand becomes your main source of mana-free damage, and drinking is the slowest part of Priest leveling. Then you detour into Shadow for 5/5 Spirit Tap and 2/2 Improved Shadow Word: Pain, and come back to Discipline for Improved Power Word: Shield, Martyrdom and Meditation.

The talents that carry it:
Discipline Penance Option: Level 30
Healing option · For players who run dungeons
If you heal dungeons on the way, respec at 30 into 21 Discipline points for Penance, a channel that damages an enemy or heals an ally. It was very strong in early beta tests and has since been toned down, so it is an option rather than a must.
Discipline Priest, level 30
Shadow Build: Levels 40–60
Full Shadow · Follows beta data
At 40 you have enough points to reach Shadowform: Improved Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace, Shadow Weaving and Darkness, with the Discipline mana talents kept on the side. This part follows beta data and will be checked after launch.
Shadow Priest, level 60
The Priest rotation is built around one idea: spend mana to soften a mob, then let the wand finish it for free. Casting until your mana bar hits zero feels like more damage, but over an hour the time spent drinking costs far more.
Before your wand, you rely on spells and a little melee:
With a wand and Spirit Tap, each pull follows the same short loop:
In groups or on packs that stay together, try tab-dotting: Shadow Word: Pain on three or four mobs, burst one down to trigger Spirit Tap, and wand the rest while the DoTs tick.
In Shadowform, pre-cast Shield and Mind Blast, apply Shadow Word: Pain, use Shadow Word: Death and Mind Blast on cooldown, and fill with Mind Flay. Shadow Word: Death hits harder than Mind Blast, and in Forever its backlash, when it does not kill, costs only 10% of your health.
If a pull goes wrong, Psychic Scream buys time, but feared mobs can run into more mobs; use it in open areas.
Your wand is the most important item you own until Shadowform. A wand ten levels out of date costs more than any piece of armor can give back, so upgrade it at every chance. One change to know: since the September 24 beta update, wands no longer gain damage from spell power, so Wand Specialization matters more and caster gear does not raise your wand damage.
These are the wand checkpoints on the way:
| Level | Wand | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Lesser Magic Wand | Crafted by Enchanters, or bought on the auction house |
| 13 | Greater Magic Wand | Crafted by Enchanters, roughly 50% more damage |
| 18–25 | Gravestone Scepter | Blackfathom Deeps quest reward; it also boosts Shadow Word: Pain |
On day one, nobody sells wands yet. The slow way is Tailoring and Enchanting: craft Brown Linen Robes, disenchant them, and make the Lesser Magic Wand at 10 Enchanting skill, which can take until level 8–10 solo. The fast way is a guild Blacksmith: a Copper Shortsword disenchants into a Lesser Magic Essence about 80% of the time, so a Blacksmith with a few copper bars can supply wand materials for every caster in the guild by level 5. Starting zones now have Mining and Skinning trainers, so you can gather the copper yourself.
Early on, spell power is your best stat; once you have 40–50 of it, Spirit becomes as valuable or more, because Spirit Tap doubles it after every kill. Intellect and Stamina come after that, and Strength and Agility do nothing for you. Spell power gear drops much earlier in Forever than in Classic, so expect to replace quest rewards often.
Six races can be Priests in Forever, and Gnomes join the list for the first time.
| Race | Faction | Key racials for a Priest | Why it helps while leveling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka!, Expansive Mind, Escape Artist | Cheaper, stronger Smite and Holy Fire, and 5% more maximum mana |
| Human | Alliance | The Human Spirit, Will to Survive | 5% more Spirit, which Spirit Tap then doubles |
| Night Elf | Alliance | Elune's Light, Quickness | 10% crit on demand and 2% movement speed |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform, Big Game Hunter | Physical damage reduction and 5% more damage to beasts |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking, Rapid Regeneration, Beast Slaying | 10% faster casting, a 50% health heal and more damage to beasts |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken, Cannibalize, Touch of the Grave | Breaks fears and charms; Cannibalize restores health and mana |
For leveling, Gnome and Human are the best Alliance picks and Troll is the best Horde pick. Undead is the stronger choice if you plan to PvP.
Forever keeps the Classic experience curve but pushes players into the open world. Since the October 1 beta build, dungeon quests give half their old bonus experience, and dungeon mobs give far less than in Classic even after the 20% increase on October 8. Low-level mobs were trimmed on purpose too, so once a zone turns green, move on. A Priest still gets the most out of dungeons, because a healer finds a group in minutes.
| Levels | Horde | Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Durotar, Tirisfal Glades | Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil |
| 10–20 | The Barrens, Silverpine Forest | Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore |
| 20–30 | Stonetalon Mountains, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills | Redridge Mountains, Duskwood, Wetlands, Ashenvale |
| 30–40 | Thousand Needles, Desolace, Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale | Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Stranglethorn Vale |
| 35–45 | Riverglades (new in Forever) | Riverglades (new in Forever) |
| 40–50 | Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Badlands | Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Badlands |
| 50–60 | Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands | Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands |
Do not skip Blackfathom Deeps: its quest gives the Gravestone Scepter wand. The other worthwhile clears on the way to 30 are Ragefire Chasm or The Deadmines, the new Ruins of Lordaeron, Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep, and the new Excavation Site and City of Dalaran. Our WoW Forever dungeons overview lists every dungeon with its level range.
If your schedule does not leave room for a full climb, our WoW Forever leveling service can take a Priest to 60 while you focus on the endgame.
If leveling speed is the only goal, crafting matters less to a Priest than to other classes, with one exception: wands. Every crafting profession still awards a Legacy point at 150, 225 and 300 skill.
Our WoW Forever professions guide covers every recipe path from 1 to 300.
Thrill of Adventure is the best first pick: at 5/5 every non-trivial kill outside dungeons, raids and battlegrounds restores 5% of your health and mana over 10 seconds, and when you chain-pull it stacks with Spirit Tap. If you plan to do battlegrounds, The Quick and the Dead saves mana when you rebuff your team after they respawn.
We explain where every Legacy point comes from in our WoW Forever Legacy Points guide.
Whatever your spec, groups will expect you to heal, and you can do it all the way to 60 even as Shadow, just with worse mana efficiency than a healing spec.
These habits keep a Priest from ever sitting down:
These are the questions players ask most often about leveling a Priest in Forever.
What is the best Priest spec for leveling in WoW Forever? A Discipline and Shadow hybrid with Wand Specialization, Spirit Tap and Meditation up to 40, then full Shadow for Shadowform.
Do wands scale with spell power in WoW Forever? No. Since the September 24 beta update, wands no longer gain damage from spell power, which makes Wand Specialization and wand upgrades even more important.
Is Penance good for leveling? Penance is a strong button, but it was nerfed during the beta and costs you the Spirit Tap points. Take it at 30 if you heal a lot of dungeons.
Can Gnomes be Priests in WoW Forever? Yes. Gnome Priests are new in Forever, and Eureka! fits Smite and Holy Fire well.
Can a Shadow Priest heal dungeons? Yes. You lose some mana efficiency compared to Holy or Discipline, but Shadow can heal leveling dungeons all the way to 60.
Once you reach 60, these guides take your Priest further:
