A Warlock in WoW Forever starts with no demon at all. Every pet in your spellbook, from the Imp you earn in the starting zone to the Dreadsteed at level 60, comes from a class quest. The chains are mostly the Classic ones, but Forever adds a new starting quest for Troll Warlocks, keeps the Incubus as a second choice at level 20, moves the level 20 quests behind a real level requirement and makes most quest items easier to loot. Below you will find every chain in the order you unlock it, with the quest givers, maps, the easier route for each faction, and what still has to be confirmed after launch on November 4.
Warlock class quests follow one pattern. Your trainer sends you to fetch a cursed object, you use it at a summoning circle, and you defeat the demon that answers to earn the right to call it. The first four chains were playable in the beta, which was capped at level 30. The quests from level 40 onward are in the Forever game data but nobody has played them yet.
The table lists every chain in the order you can start it.
| Level | Reward | Where the chain starts | Group needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Summon Imp | Your starting zone trainer | No |
| 10 | Summon Voidwalker | Stormwind, Ironforge, Undercity or Orgrimmar | No |
| 20 | Summon Succubus or Summon Incubus, plus Small Soul Pouch | Your capital city trainer | No |
| 20–25 | Staff of Soran'ruk or Orb of Soran'ruk | Doan Karhan, The Barrens | Yes, two dungeons |
| 30 | Summon Felhunter, plus Box of Souls | Your capital city trainer | No |
| 40 | Summon Felsteed | Your capital city trainer | No |
| 50–55 | Inferno | Niby the Almighty, Felwood | Recommended for one elite |
| 60 | Ritual of Doom | Daio the Decrepit, Blasted Lands | Recommended |
| 60 | Summon Dreadsteed | Your capital city trainer | Yes, five players in Dire Maul |
In Classic the Imp was in your spellbook from the first second. In WoW Forever you earn it with a short quest in your starting zone, so a fresh Warlock fights its first mobs alone with Shadow Bolt. The chain has two steps for every race. At level 1 a letter quest sends you to your Warlock trainer, and from there a level 4 quest asks you to bring back an item. You can take it as soon as you reach the trainer, but most players finish it around level 3 or 4.
Troll Warlocks are new in Forever and get their own letter quest, Tainted Tablet. Trolls start in the Valley of Trials next to the Orcs and then share the Orc quest for the Imp.
Each race starts from a different trainer, so find your row first.
| Race | Letter quest | Imp quest | What to bring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Tainted Letter from Marshal McBride | The Stolen Tome from Drusilla La Salle | Powers of the Void from the Defias tent in the vineyards of Northshire Valley, Elwynn Forest 56.7, 44.0 |
| Gnome | Tainted Memorandum from Sten Stoutarm | Beginnings from Alamar Grimm | 3 Feather Charm from Frostmane Novice in the cave southwest of Anvilmar, Dun Morogh |
| Orc | Tainted Parchment from Gornek | Vile Familiars from Ruzan | 6 Vile Familiar Head from Vile Familiar in the cave northeast of the Valley of Trials, Durotar |
| Troll | Tainted Tablet from Gornek | Vile Familiars from Ruzan | 6 Vile Familiar Head, same cave as the Orcs |
| Undead | Tainted Scroll from Shadow Priest Sarvis | Piercing the Veil from Venya Marthand | 3 Rattlecage Skull from Rattlecage Skeleton near Deathknell, Tirisfal Glades |
The Human quest is the only tricky one. Powers of the Void lies inside a tent guarded by several Defias, and at level 2 or 3 two of them at once can kill you. Pull them out of the tent one at a time, then loot the book. Orc and Troll Warlocks should kill Vile Familiar at the mouth of the cave, where they stand apart. The Imp costs no Soul Shard to summon, so you can call it again after every death.
The Voidwalker is the demon you will use for most of your leveling, because it holds two mobs while your DoTs do the work. Its quest opens at level 10 and has three versions: one in Stormwind City for the Alliance, and one each in the Undercity and Orgrimmar for the Horde. Every version ends the same way. You use a cursed item at a summoning circle, a hostile Voidwalker appears, and once you beat it you learn Summon Voidwalker.
Human and Gnome Warlocks share one chain, and it is quick.
At Brackwell, open on Surena with your Imp and DoTs and Fear one of the guards. The choker is party loot in Forever, so two Warlocks who group up both get one from a single kill.
This is the easier Horde version, and Orc Warlocks can take the zeppelin to Tirisfal Glades and do it too.
The Orgrimmar version sends you into Skull Rock, a cave full of Burning Blade cultists at or above your level. The mobs stand close together and the stash is at the very back, which makes it the most dangerous quest of the whole set at level 10.
Troll Warlocks should plan for this version. The Forever game data still lists the Undercity chain for Orcs and Undead only, so a Troll may not be offered it. If you are a Troll, find one or two other players for Skull Rock rather than going in alone.
The binding fight is the same in all three cities. Put Corruption, Immolate and your bane on the Voidwalker, send in the Imp, and Fear it when it reaches you. It dies in about 15 seconds. Carry a spare Soul Shard from Drain Soul: your first summon of the new demon costs one, and you will want it right away.
At level 20 your trainer offers a choice between two demons of the same kind, the Succubus and the Incubus. Both deal the most single-target damage of your early demons and both can use Seduction to take a humanoid out of the fight, so most players pick by looks. The difference that matters is practical: they are two separate spells, and the demon abilities you buy as Demonic Grimoires from the demon trainer do not carry over from one to the other. Pick one and stay with it, or you pay for every grimoire twice.
Every version of both quests also rewards a Small Soul Pouch, a 14-slot bag for your shards. In Forever all of these quests are now set to level 20.
The Undercity route is short: two kills and two turn-ins.
The Orgrimmar route is the classic errand run across Kalimdor, with one elite at the end.
The Undercity route is the only Horde demon chain that the Forever data opens to all three Warlock races, Trolls included.
The Orgrimmar route has the toughest step: in Forever its second quest became a level 27 quest, and the mobs that drop the scarf are around that level too.
The demon at the binding hits hard for level 20. Summon your Voidwalker before you use the item, let it take the first hits, and keep your DoTs and Fear rolling as in the Voidwalker fight. If the Voidwalker drops low, use Sacrifice for the shield and finish the demon with Drain Life.
The only Warlock quest that ends with a weapon is The Orb of Soran'ruk. It is a level 25 quest you can take from level 20, it is the same for both factions, and in Forever its staff got a big upgrade. The Staff of Soran'ruk is now rare quality with +14 Stamina and +34 Fire and Shadow damage, against +9 in Classic. That is a better caster weapon than almost anything you will find before level 30.
The quest giver is Doan Karhan, who stands next to Takar the Seer in The Barrens 49.2, 57.2. He asks for fragments from two dungeons, and both items now use progressive loot, so the drop chance grows with every kill.
| Item | Drops from | Dungeon |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Soran'ruk Fragment | Twilight Acolyte, in the temple near the end of the instance | Blackfathom Deeps |
| 1 Large Soran'ruk Fragment | Shadowfang Darksoul, up the stairs to the right after the second boss | Shadowfang Keep |
Shadowfang Darksoul is immune to Shadow, so kill him with Immolate and your wand. Do not leave Blackfathom Deeps until all three fragments are in your bags. The large fragment is party loot, so a second Warlock in your group gets one from the same kill.
You choose between the staff and the Orb of Soran'ruk. The staff is the safer pick for leveling because of its Stamina. The orb is an off-hand with spell damage and an on-use heal, so it only wins if you already hold a good one-handed weapon from Shadowfang Keep or Razorfen Kraul.
The weapon quests of the other classes are compared in our WoW Forever class weapon quests overview.
The Felhunter is the demon you take into PvP and against casters, because it can interrupt a spell and eat magic effects. Its quest opens at level 30 and is the longest of your demon chains: three pieces of a book from three zones, then a summoning at a tower in Ratchet. Both factions do almost the same chain, and the reward also includes a Box of Souls, a 16-slot shard bag.
At the murloc camp, send your Voidwalker in first and let it pull the murlocs with Suffering while you loot the tome. In the binding, wait until the green circle sits on top of the pink one before you read the tome. If the summon fails, abandon The Binding and take it again from Strahad. You can fight the Felhunter with your own Voidwalker.
As with the other Horde chains, the Forever data lists the Felhunter quests for Orcs and Undead only. If you play a Troll and Strahad does not offer the quest, report it as a bug after launch.
At level 40 every other class pays 100 gold for riding and its first mount. Warlocks get the Felsteed for free through a two-step class quest, and the second step has no trial at all. This chain is in the Forever game data unchanged from Classic, but the beta stopped at level 30, so nobody has played it in Forever yet.
The Felsteed is a normal-speed ground mount with a 3-second cast that costs 100 mana. In Forever it has its own mount ID, so expect to find it in your Mounts collection next to other mounts rather than as a Demonology spell. That is also where a rumor that Warlock mounts were removed came from: they are still in the game data and the quest still teaches them.
One question stays open until launch: we do not know yet whether the quest also grants the universal Riding skill, which Forever uses for all mounts, or whether a Warlock still pays the trainer for it. If you plan your gold for level 40, keep 100 gold aside in case riding has to be bought. Our WoW Forever mounts guide explains how riding works for every other class.
The two big demons are not pets you keep. Inferno drops an Infernal from the sky that fights for you for a few minutes before it turns on you, and Ritual of Doom calls a Doomguard with the help of four other players. Both need a quest, and both chains are in the Forever data exactly as in Classic.
The reward is the Inferno spell and the Shard of the Green Flame trinket.
The reward is Ritual of Doom and the Tome of Sacrifice.
The Dreadsteed is the Warlock epic mount and the longest class quest you will do. It takes a trip to almost every level 60 zone, a stack of crafting materials, a Scholomance run and a five-player ritual in Dire Maul. The whole chain is in the Forever data unchanged from Classic. Only the price of riding may differ, because Forever uses one Riding skill for all mounts.
Gorzeeki's four quests need these materials, and every one of them can be bought on the Auction House.
| Quest | Materials |
|---|---|
| Bell of Dethmoora | 10 Elixir of Shadow Power |
| Wheel of the Black March | 6 Large Brilliant Shard and 25 Dark Iron Ore |
| Doomsday Candle | 35 Black Dragonscale |
| Arcanite | 3 Arcanite Bar |
In Classic the chain cost around 400 gold on top of the materials, most of it for the stardust and the replacement ritual tools. Forever prices are not confirmed yet.
The ritual needs a full group of five. Clear Dire Maul West up to and including Immol'thar, then release J'eevee from the jar. She places the Bell, the Wheel and the Candle in a circle, and for about five minutes waves of imps and felguards attack while the three items slowly fail. A Warlock repairs a failing item with the Black Lodestone, which costs one Soul Shard and breaks on damage, so your tank has to hold every add away from the repairing Warlock.
When the timer ends, click the Xorothian Glyphs. The Xorothian Dreadsteed appears first and then Lord Hel'nurath. Kill both, then talk to the Dreadsteed Spirit to learn Summon Dreadsteed.
Bring at least 25 Soul Shards. Only one Warlock in the group needs J'eevee's Jar, the Black Lodestone and the Xorothian Glyphs, and every other Warlock on the last step finishes the quest in the same run, so it pays to do the ritual together with a guildmate.
Forever keeps the Classic quest givers, places and fights for every Warlock chain. The changes are in who can do them, when, and how fast the quest items drop.
| Change | Classic | WoW Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Imp | Known from level 1 | Learned from a starting zone quest at level 1 to 4 |
| Troll Warlocks | Not a playable race and class | Playable, with the new Tainted Tablet quest in the Valley of Trials |
| Level 20 quests | Some had no quest level set | All set to level 20; Wish You Were Here is now a level 27 quest and gives more experience |
| Succubus quest in the Wetlands | Kill a man named Comar | Kill Corma Villard for Corma's Heart |
| Quest item drops | Fixed drop chance, one item per kill | Progressive loot raises the chance with every kill, and party loot gives every group member their own item |
| Staff of Soran'ruk | Uncommon, +9 Fire and Shadow damage | Rare, +14 Stamina, +34 Fire and Shadow damage |
| Felsteed and Dreadsteed | Demonology spells | Mounts with their own mount ID, still taught by the same quests |
The Incubus is not new to Forever. Its quests came to Classic Era in 2022, and Forever simply keeps them. Warlocks also have no Felguard in Forever: the four demons from the quests above plus the Infernal and Doomguard are the whole roster. Our WoW Forever class changes overview covers the rest of the Warlock rework, from banes to demons that scale with your stats.
Most of the time on these quests goes into travel and into the summoning fights, and a few habits from the beta save you both.
Our WoW Forever Warlock leveling guide explains how to use each demon between these quests, with talent builds and a rotation for every stage.
Once your demons are in place, these guides cover the rest of your Warlock:
These are the questions players asked most often about Warlock class quests during the beta.
No. You learn Summon Imp from a quest in your starting zone, which you can take at level 1 and usually finish at level 3 or 4.
The Undercity version. It sends you to a chest in a Scarlet tower in Tirisfal Glades, while the Orgrimmar version sends you to the back of Skull Rock at level 10.
Pick by looks. They fill the same role, but they are separate spells, and the grimoires you buy for one do not work on the other, so stay with your choice.
Each quest chain is separate, so you can do both, but you will pay for every demon ability twice. Most players learn one.
No. Both are in the Forever game data as mounts with their own mount ID, and both class quests still teach them. They show up with your other mounts rather than in the Demonology spellbook.
The quest itself costs nothing and teaches the Felsteed at level 40. Whether a Warlock still pays the trainer for the Riding skill will only be clear after launch, so keep 100 gold ready.
Trolls have their own starting quest, the Orgrimmar Voidwalker chain and the Undercity Incubus chain. The Forever data still lists the other Horde demon quests for Orcs and Undead only, which may change after launch.
Yes. In Forever it is a rare staff with +14 Stamina and +34 Fire and Shadow damage, which makes it one of the best Warlock weapons until level 30.
