As of Patch 9.1, doing weekly win at your current rating technically is required to maintain ability to upgrade PvP gear to higher item level. For example, if you have 1800 rating in 3s and fulfilled the PvP objective of Great Vault in 2s at 1000 rating you won't be able to upgrade items from Great Vault and PvP vendor until you get 1 win at 1800+ in 3s.
