Among the many Season of Discovery changes comes one big one. Runes, or Rune Engravings, are an additional form of character progression. In SoD Phase 1 available from level 2 onwards each class has 12 Runes available split between Gloves, Legs, and Chest. In SoD Phase 2, you'll get two new slots: Boots and Belt. Thus, you will be able to add up to two new runes from those that will be added in SoD Phase 2. With SoD Phase 3 release, you will be able to add runes to two more slots: Head and Wrists. After SoD Phase 4 release, you will be able to get runes for the Cloak slot and, additionally, get access to utility runes for your Ring slot that weapon skill, spell hit, and other bonuses.
To get runes for any slot, you will need to spend a lot of time farming, exploring, and doing any other required type of content in the game. Some of the runes could be obtained during leveling, but some of the rarest ones can be obtained only when you reach the max level of the current SoD phase, in a group or just challenging solo type of content.
Each Rune will grant a specific ability or passive, and outside combat can be freely swapped for the other options in the same slot. These abilities range from something like Warbringer, allowing Warriors to Charge in combat, to other things like Regeneration, a healing spell for Mages.

Utility Runes are a new SoD Phase 4 feature that is applied to a ring slot. Ring Runes are Unique and while you can equip two Ring Runes total, one for each ring, you cannot equip two of the same Runes. For example, you can use both Rune of Fire Specialization and Rune of Frost Specialization, but not two Rune of Frost Specialization. Ring Runes offers weapon skill, spell hit, and other bonuses. In SoD Phase 5 we are only getting two new ring runes, one for mana regen and the other to increase healing powers.
