Undying Darkhound Mount Guide

Updated 22 Dec 2025 | Author: Invord | ~6 min

The Undying Darkhound is a formidable and spectral ground mount, a loyal companion forged in the necromantic energies of Maldraxxus. This menacing skeletal hound represents one of Shadowlands' more structured but time-gated collection challenges, tied directly to the ongoing covenant war effort within the tormented realm of the Maw. Unlike purely random world drops, its acquisition follows a predictable weekly schedule, offering collectors a reliable, if patient, path to ownership.

What makes the Undying Darkhound particularly interesting is its connection to the Necrolord Covenant Assault—a limited-time world event that rotates among the four covenants. This creates a strategic waiting game, where preparation meets opportunity during the correct assault window. The mount's stark, bony aesthetic and haunting blue glow make it a prized trophy for those who master the Maw's hostile landscape and its rotating military campaigns.

  • Added in patch: 9.1.0 "Chains of Domination"
  • Type: Ground
  • Source: Covenant Assault Event
  • Requirements: Shadowlands Campaign Completion, Unlocked Covenant Assaults

How to Get the Undying Darkhound

Undying Darkhound Mount

To claim the Undying Darkhound, you must successfully complete the Necrolord Covenant Assault in the Maw when it is active. Your reward for this military campaign is the War Chest of the Undying Army, which has a 4% chance to contain the mount. Additionally, the chest has a 1% chance to award the battle pet Fodder.

The journey requires patience and planning. Since covenant assaults rotate on a fixed schedule, you cannot farm the mount continuously. Instead, you must wait for the Necrolord's turn to lead the assault—approximately once every two weeks—and then efficiently complete the event's objectives to earn your weekly chance at the coveted chest.

Don't want to wait for the right assault or grind the Maw? Our team can monitor the schedule and complete the assault for you. Check out our Undying Darkhound acquisition service for a guaranteed attempt at this spectral hound.

Step 1: Gaining Access to the Maw & Unlocking Assaults

Before you can hunt the Undying Darkhound, you must secure access to the endgame Shadowlands zone where it's found.

Campaign Requirements:

  • Complete the linear Shadowlands storyline through all four main zones: Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth.
  • Finish the quest "Choosing Your Purpose" to select your covenant.
  • Complete the first chapter of your chosen covenant's campaign.
  • Accept and complete "The Highlord Calls" from Bolvar Fordragon in Oribos.

After this, you can access the Maw at any time via the Soul Pillar in the center of the Ring of Transference on Oribos's upper level.

Unlocking Covenant Assaults: To participate in assaults, you must progress further into the 9.1 campaign. Complete Chapter 2 of the Chains of Domination questline, starting with "Maw Walker". Afterwards, Bolvar Fordragon in Korthia will offer the breadcrumb quest "A Unified Effort", which unlocks the covenant assault system.

Step 2: Understanding Covenant Assault Rotation

Covenant assaults are bi-weekly events in the Maw. Only one covenant leads the assault at a time, rotating in a fixed order:

Kyrian → Venthyr → Night Fae → Necrolord → (repeat)

You can check which assault is active by opening your Maw map or by visiting the "Today in WoW" section on Wowhead's front page under the Shadowlands category.

Covenant Assault Schedule on Wowhead

Rotation Schedule:

  • US Servers: Tuesdays at 8:00 AM PDT and Fridays at 8:00 PM PDT.
  • EU Servers: Wednesdays at 8:00 AM CET and Saturdays at 8:00 PM CET.

Important: You need to wait for the Necrolord Covenant Assault to be active to earn the correct War Chest. The assault remains active for approximately 3.5 days before rotating.

Step 3: Completing the Necrolord Covenant Assault

When the Necrolord assault is up, follow this precise route to complete it efficiently and claim your War Chest.

1. Travel to Perdition Hold:

  • Take the portal to Oribos from Orgrimmar or Stormwind.
  • Use the teleporter to reach the Ring of Transference (top level).
  • Jump into the Soul Pillar to enter the Maw.
  • Immediately upon landing, look to your right to find a Maldraxxi Tauralus with Necrolord NPCs.
  • Tauralus Location: /way #1543 43.4 40.0
Maldraxxi Tauralus Mount

2. Start the Assault: The Tauralus will fly you directly to Perdition Hold. Find the Necrolord leader, Baroness Draka, and speak to her to begin the assault.

Draka's Location: /way #1543 33.9 54.8

3. Complete the Four Initial Quests: After speaking with Draka, four quests will become available in the immediate area. Pro-Tip: If you don't see quest markers, ensure "Trivial Quests" tracking is enabled on your minimap. Complete and turn in all four quests.

4. Initiate the Final Charge: After turning in the quests, Draka will have moved slightly inside Perdition Hold. Speak to her again to receive an extra action button: Signal to Advance. Use this ability near her to sound the war horn and begin the final phase.

5. Eliminate the Three Elite Targets: Cross the bridge to the Altar of Domination. You must defeat three powerful Mawsworn elites:

Evelana the Dread Boss

6. Claim Your Reward: Upon defeating Evelana the Dread, the War Chest of the Undying Army will automatically appear in your bags. Open it for your chance at the Undying Darkhound mount!

Essential Addons & Pro-Tips for Efficient Farming

While the assault itself is straightforward, these tools and strategies will maximize your efficiency across what could be a multi-month farming endeavor due to the low drop rate and bi-weekly lockout.

  • HandyNotes with Shadowlands plugins: Highly recommended. Many community modules will mark the exact locations of the three elite targets (Vexicon, Asmea, Evelana) on your map and minimap, saving navigation time during the final phase.
  • Rarity or AllTheThings: Tracks your total attempts at the War Chest and displays the calculated drop chance, helping you visualize your progress toward the statistical likelihood of receiving the mount.
  • SavedInstances: If you plan to run the assault on multiple characters to increase your weekly chances, this addon helps track which alts have completed the Necrolord assault for the current rotation period.
  • Multi-Character Strategy: Since the War Chest is per-character, you can complete the Necrolord assault on every level 60+ alt you have when it's active. This multiplies your chances from one 4% attempt to several per assault cycle.
  • Schedule Awareness: Bookmark the Wowhead "Today in WoW" page or set a calendar reminder for the rotation times. Missing the 3.5-day Necrolord window sets you back nearly two weeks.

These tools and strategies provide the organizational framework and time-saving precision needed to pursue a time-gated, low-drop-chance mount without unnecessary frustration.

Need to prepare multiple characters for assault farming? Our power leveling service can quickly get your alts to the required level and campaign progress, maximizing your chances each assault cycle.
