The Plaguerot Tauralus is a rugged, plague-touched beast whose decaying hide and stubborn, unyielding nature embody the grim resilience of the Necrolord Covenant. Its scarred frame, sickly green glow, and the air of decay that clings to it make it a favourite among collectors who appreciate mounts with a dark, utilitarian aesthetic. The flavour text speaks to its peculiar reputation: "The tauralus is considered courageous, though scholars of Maldraxxus have long wondered if their lack of fear is simply due to the tiny size of their brains." For collectors who value prestige and the satisfaction of a long-term Covenant progression, this mount is a true trophy — a symbol of your dedication to the House of the Chosen.
Introduced in patch 9.0.1 as part of the Shadowlands expansion, the Plaguerot Tauralus is a mount that rewards steady commitment to the Necrolord Covenant. Rather than chasing rare drops or complex achievements, you simply need to progress through your Covenant's Renown track — a predictable journey that offers a satisfying sense of momentum as you inch closer to your goal. For those who take pride in their Covenant allegiance and appreciate a mount that reflects their dedication, the Plaguerot Tauralus stands as a fitting companion for any Necrolord.

How to Get Plaguerot Tauralus
The Plaguerot Tauralus is awarded automatically when you reach Renown 23 with the Necrolord Covenant. This is a 100% guaranteed acquisition — there is no RNG involved, no currency to farm, and no achievements to complete. Simply earn the required Renown, and the mount will be added to your collection. Once obtained, the mount is account-wide and available to all your characters.
At first, the mount could only be summoned by a Necrolord character. However, after the release of Dragonflight and the introduction of the Warband system, access was unlocked account-wide upon reaching Renown 80 with the Necrolords.
Step 1: Join the Necrolord Covenant
If you are not already a member of the Necrolord Covenant, you must first join them. This becomes available after you complete the main Shadowlands campaign and finish the quest Choosing Your Purpose in Oribos, where you pledge your allegiance to a covenant. The Necrolord Covenant is essential for this mount, as it is exclusively available to its members.
You must complete the quest Welcome To Our House and the basic tasks that unlock the sanctum Seat of the Primus.
Step 2: Earning Renown
Renown is the primary progression system for Covenants in Shadowlands. To reach Renown 23, you'll need to engage with a variety of activities. Here are the most efficient ways to earn Renown:
- Shadowlands Main Campaign: Questing through the 9.0 main campaign is highly recommended. You'll unlock other zones and earn a substantial amount of Renown along the way. After finishing the main campaign plus a bit of Korthia's campaign, you'll likely reach a high Renown level.
- Torghast: Running a normal Torghast wing (not Twisting Corridors or Jailer's Gauntlet) has a high chance to reward Renown. Any layer works, as it's relatively fast and trivial with current gear.
- Shadowlands Raid Bosses: Killing bosses in Shadowlands raids has a high chance of granting a Renown level.
- Covenant Callings: Complete daily covenant callings for a chance at Renown.
- Weekly Quests: Complete weekly quests such as Shaping Fate in Korthia.
- World Bosses: Kill the weekly World Boss in the Shadowlands for a chance at Renown.
- Shadowlands Dungeons: Completing any Shadowlands dungeon has a chance to reward Renown.
- Bonus Objective Areas: Completing bonus objectives in Shadowlands zones can also grant Renown.
Step 3: Using Broker Mark of Distinction (Renown Catch-Up)
If you've reached maximum (80) Renown with any covenant on any character on your account, you can purchase a Broker Mark of Distinction to quickly boost your current covenant's Renown.
- Cost: 500 gold.
- Effect: Boosts your currently active covenant's Renown to 60.
- Vendor: Au'Dara on the top floor of Oribos, next to the flight master.
- Requirement: Your character must be level 50 to use the item, and you must have earned the Renowned achievement on any character.
- Coordinates: /way #1671 60.1 71.1 – Au'Dara
Important: You can check if you've reached 80 Renown before by searching for the Renowned achievement in your achievements tab. If you have this achievement, you can use the Broker Mark of Distinction on any character to skip the early Renown grind and reach Renown 60 instantly.
Extra Tips and Common Mistakes
- Use the Renown catch-up if available: If you've already reached Renown 80 on any character, use the Broker Mark of Distinction to boost your Necrolord Renown to 60 — this instantly completes the requirement for the mount.
- Don't ignore the campaign: The main Shadowlands campaign is one of the most efficient ways to earn Renown while also unlocking essential content. Prioritise it if you're starting from scratch.
- Focus on weekly activities: Weekly quests like Shaping Fate and World Bosses offer reliable Renown gains. Make sure to complete them every week.
- Torghast is quick: Normal Torghast runs are fast and have a high chance of rewarding Renown. Use them to fill gaps in your progression.
- The mount is account-wide: Once obtained, the mount is available to all your characters, regardless of their Covenant.
- No currency required: The mount is awarded automatically at Renown 23 — you do not need to spend gold or any other currency to obtain it.
Useful Addons for Farming Plaguerot Tauralus
Farming Renown to 23 requires consistency and efficiency. The right addons can help you track your progress, identify activities that reward Renown, and manage your Covenant campaign.

- World Quest Tracker: Shows all available world quests and callings on a single panel, helping you quickly identify Renown opportunities.
