The Nazjatar Blood Serpent is a terrifying, corruption-ridden serpent whose crimson scales and void-touched form embody the insidious influence of N'zoth upon the seas. Its sinuous body, glowing eyes, and menacing presence make it a favourite among collectors who appreciate mounts with a dark, ominous aesthetic. The flavour text speaks to its sinister origins: "Monstrous serpents riddled with corruption serve as mounts for N'zoth's high-ranking lieutenants in the Great Sea." For collectors who value prestige and the thrill of uncovering secrets, this mount is a true trophy — a creature of the abyss that carries the power of the Old Gods.
Introduced in patch 8.0.1 "Battle for Azeroth", the Nazjatar Blood Serpent is one of the more unusual mounts to obtain from the Battle for Azeroth expansion. Unlike many mounts that are tied to a single faction, dungeon, or raid, this serpent is acquired through a multi-step hidden quest chain that involves gathering rare fragments, visiting hidden locations, and summoning a powerful elite enemy. The reward is a 100% guaranteed drop from the summoned boss — but only for the player who performs the summoning. For collectors who enjoy the journey as much as the reward and appreciate a mount with a bit of mystery behind it, the Nazjatar Blood Serpent offers a satisfying and achievable goal.
The Nazjatar Blood Serpent is obtained by summoning and defeating the Adherent of the Abyss, a rare elite that drops the mount with a 100% drop chance — but only for the player who summons it. Allies who help you defeat the Adherent will not receive the mount.
To summon the Adherent of the Abyss, you need to collect 20 Abyssal Fragments. These fragments drop from N'zoth-loyal mobs across various Battle for Azeroth zones. Once you have 20 fragments, combine them at the Altar of the Abyss to create the Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss. Then, use the essence at the Abyssal Flame in Stormsong Valley to summon the Adherent.
This is a 100% guaranteed acquisition if you have the fragments — there is no RNG involved in the mount drop itself, only in farming the fragments. The mount is Bind-on-Pickup, so it must be looted and learned on the character that obtains it.
Abyssal Fragments drop from N'zoth-loyal mobs across various BFA zones. This includes Tidesage and Naga mobs found throughout Kul Tiras and Zandalar.
Important: Abyssal Fragments do not drop in Nazjatar, Uldum, or the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Stick to the original BFA zones from the 8.0 patch.
Recommended farming spot: Atal'gral within Zuldazar. Here you will find a large grouping of Naga mobs that are easy to farm. Depending on your realm, fragments may go for 1,000–2,000 gold each on the Auction House.
Since Abyssal Fragments are Bind-on-Equip, you can also purchase them from the Auction House. This is the fastest method if you have the gold and want to skip the farming grind.
Once you've collected all 20 fragments, travel to the Altar of the Abyss, located inside a hidden cave behind a waterfall in Stormsong Valley.
Interact with the Altar to combine your 20 Abyssal Fragments into the Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss. This item is consumed upon use, so make sure you are ready before proceeding to the next step.
With the Abhorrent Essence in your inventory, travel to Warfang Hold in Stormsong Valley. You need to find the Abyssal Flame, located inside a cave.
Use the Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss in front of the Abyssal Flame to summon the Adherent of the Abyss. This elite enemy may be difficult to solo for lower-geared characters, so it's recommended to bring a friend or group to help.
Important: The mount will only drop for the player who used the essence to summon the Adherent. Allies who help defeat it will not receive the mount.
Once defeated, the Adherent of the Abyss will drop the Nazjatar Blood Serpent with a 100% drop chance. Learn the mount immediately to add it to your collection.
Farming Abyssal Fragments and navigating to hidden locations is much easier with the right addons.
Pro tip: Use TomTom to set waypoints for both the Altar and the Abyssal Flame so you don't waste time searching for the cave entrances.
