Mythic+ Gearing Guide

Updated 30 Nov -0001 | Author: Kir | ~8 min

Gearing up in Mythic+ is all about running dungeons, earning loot, and gradually making your character stronger. Each week, you’ll get a powerful piece of gear from the Great Vault based on the highest keys you’ve completed, on top of the end-of-dungeon rewards that have a chance to drop after every run. The key is to keep pushing higher difficulties, collect upgrade currencies, and focus on replacing your weakest items first. In the guide below, you’ll find everything you need to know about gearing up in Midnight Mythic+: end-of-dungeon loot, Great Vault rewards, Crests currency, and the most efficient ways to gear up through weekly dungeons.

How Mythic+ Gearing Works in Midnight

Traditionally, Mythic+ dungeons are the best source of PvE gear in World of Warcraft. The advantage of this mode is that there aren’t any limitations except your free time. While raid bosses give you a chance at valuable loot only once per week per difficulty, dungeons can reward you with end-of-run loot after every single run — if you’re lucky enough. So even if you’re not the biggest fan of this in-game activity, let’s take a closer look at all the possible Mythic+ gearing options.

End-of-Run, Great Vault, and Crest Upgrades

Generally, there are three ways to gear up your character through weekly Mythic+ runs. All of them pair well with raiding.

  • End-of-run rewards: After completing a dungeon, you can loot a chest that can reward you with item level 250–266 gear, depending on the key level.
  • Great Vault rewards: Based on the difficulty of the dungeons you completed the previous week, you can earn a weekly chest reward ranging from item level 259 to 272.
  • Dawncrests currency: Every completed dungeon rewards you with Champion Dawncrest, Hero Dawncrest, or Myth Dawncrest — depending on the difficulty — which you can spend to upgrade your gear.

Keep in mind that with no limits on dungeon runs, you can use this source to quickly power up your character.

How M+ Gear Compares to Raid and Delve Gear in Midnight

The three main PvE activities in Midnight reward players with gear across different item level ranges. Let’s take a look, from the lowest to the highest:

  • Delves: Item level 220–250 Bountiful rewards, 233–259 Great Vault rewards.
  • Mythic+ dungeons: Item level 250–266 Bountiful rewards, 259–272 Great Vault rewards.
  • Raids: Item level 246–256 Normal rewards, 259–269 Heroic rewards, 272–282 Mythic rewards.

Yes, if you’re after the highest item level gear, you should aim for Mythic raid encounters. But by using the gear upgrade system, you can increase your dungeon gear up to Mythic raid levels.

Mythic+ End-of-Run Loot

As mentioned, every player has a chance to get loot after each completed dungeon run. You can also trade items you don’t need to other players and pick up gear that way. To maximize your chances of getting the reward you want, consider teaming up with players who share your armor type.

Complete End-of-Run Item Level Table

We’ve already mentioned that Mythic+ dungeon gear starts at item level 250. The table below shows the exact rewards for every key level.

Key Difficulty Item Level
Mythic +2 250
Mythic +3 250
Mythic +4 253
Mythic +5 256
Mythic +6 259
Mythic +7 259
Mythic +8 263
Mythic +9 263
Mythic +10 266

While gear item level stops scaling at +10, farming +12 keys will earn you an increased number of Crests.

How the Number of Items Dropped Scales with Key Level and Timer

Even if you don’t beat the timer, you can still loot the final chest for your rewards. That said, finishing a dungeon in time doesn’t increase the number of items you get. The same goes for key level: clearing higher keys raises the item level of your rewards, but the number of items stays the same.

Which Item Slots Can Drop from Mythic+ End-of-Run Chests?

Mythic+ dungeon loot tables cover every possible item slot. The only thing you won’t find among the rewards are tier set tokens — but you can get those from the weekly Great Vault chest.

The Great Vault Item Levels for Mythic+

Completing the Great Vault Mythic+ objectives lets you unlock up to three items with an increased item level of up to 272. The table below shows the exact item levels based on the key levels you completed.

Key Difficulty Item Level
Mythic +2 259
Mythic +3 259
Mythic +4 263
Mythic +5 263
Mythic +6 266
Mythic +7 269
Mythic +8 269
Mythic +9 269
Mythic +10 272

As for the items you can loot, the pool is based on the dungeons you ran during the week plus tier set pieces. You can find more details about Mythic+ Great Vault Rewards in our separate article.

Upgrade Tracks Explained

Gear in Midnight is divided into five different types. Depending on the activities you complete, you can earn items of Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Myth quality. In addition, all items can be upgraded up to 6 ranks within their quality type. Let’s dive into how the upgrade tracks work in detail.

How Upgrade Tracks Work in Midnight

Each of the five quality types of Midnight gear comes from a specific source:

  • Adventurer Gear: World content, Heroic dungeons, low-tier Delves.
  • Veteran Gear: World content and mid-tier Delves.
  • Champion Gear: Normal raids, high-tier Delves, low-tier Mythic+ dungeons.
  • Hero Gear: High-tier Mythic+ dungeons and Heroic raids.
  • Myth Gear: High-tier Great Vault rewards and Mythic raids.

Every item can also be upgraded up to 6 times within its current quality, though in most cases, you'll find gear already above rank 1.

Dawncrests Currency Overview

Every completed Mythic+ dungeon run rewards players with a certain number of Crests used for gear upgrades — even if you don't beat the timer. Check the table to see what type and how many Dawncrests you can earn at each difficulty level.

Key Level Crests Type and Number
Mythic +2 12 Champion Dawncrest
Mythic +3 14 Champion Dawncrest
Mythic +4 10 Hero Dawncrest
Mythic +5 12 Hero Dawncrest
Mythic +6 14 Hero Dawncrest
Mythic +7 16 Hero Dawncrest
Mythic +8 18 Hero Dawncrest
Mythic +9 10 Myth Dawncrest
Mythic +10 12 Myth Dawncrest
Mythic +11 14 Myth Dawncrest
Mythic +12 16 Myth Dawncrest

The Fastest Mythic+ Gearing Roadmap for a Fresh Character

In most cases, you can't jump straight into spamming high-tier dungeon runs. The process takes some preparation, including world-quest completion and diving into lower-level dungeon encounters. So let's go over a basic Mythic+ gearing roadmap for the Midnight expansion.

Step 1: Heroic Dungeons and Mythic 0 World Tour for Baseline Gear

To prepare your character for Mythic+ pushing, the best approach is to collect Adventurer (item level 224) gear from Heroic dungeons through the LFG system. After that, you can run the seasonal dungeons on Mythic 0 to gear up with item level 246 equipment and learn the tactics you'll need for future Mythic+ runs.

Step 2: Push Your Own Key to +2 and Start the M+ Loot Cycle

Once you've completed at least one Mythic dungeon, you'll receive your own Mythic+ key, which you can use to run at +2. From there, you can start building your Mythic+ score and earning Champion-quality gear at item level 250 and above.

Step 3: Target +6 Keys for Hero Track Gear and Crest Farming

Your next milestone is +6 and higher dungeons, which reward Hero-quality gear you can start upgrading with Dawncrests. Keep in mind that you should prioritize upgrading your Best-in-Slot items first, as they can be more valuable than even some Myth-quality pieces.

Step 4: Push +10 Keys for Myth Track Vault Rewards

Your final goal is Mythic +10 dungeons, which drop item level 266 loot and unlock item level 272 Great Vault rewards. Higher keys offer the same rewards, but you can run +12 keys to increase the number of Crests you earn.

Mythic+ Gearing Strategy

At the start of the season, the main goal for players is to collect a tier set, which greatly empowers your character. If you don't raid, your primary source of tier pieces will be Great Vault rewards. You'll also want to identify your list of Best-in-Slot weapons, trinkets, and non-set items, and farm the specific dungeons that drop them until you get what you need.

Once you have Hero- or Myth-quality gear equipped, you can start using Dawncrests for upgrades. We'll cover this in more detail in the following sections.

The Upgrade Priority Order

In most cases, you should follow a specific order based on how hard an item is to get. The Great Vault can save you a lot of time, so it's generally best to choose the item that would otherwise cost you dozens of dungeon runs. The ideal priority order looks like this:

  1. Weapon
  2. Trinket
  3. Tier set item
  4. Highest item level upgrade

That last point reflects the standard situation you'll face toward the end of the season.

How to Use the Catalyst to Complete Your Tier Set from Mythic+ Gear

As mentioned, you should focus on obtaining your class tier set as quickly as possible. If you can't get it through the Great Vault chest, you can always use Dawnlight Manaflux charges to transform an eligible item into a tier set piece.

The first Dawnlight Manaflux charge becomes available at the start of the season. After that, players earn a new charge every two weeks.

To use Manaflux, head to one of the two Matryx Catalysts in Silvermoon. The first, neutral, can be found near the Sanctum of Light (/way 40.6 64.6).

Matryx Catalyst

The second, Horde-only, is located in the Court of Blood (/way 70.0 83.3).

Keep in mind that only items of at least Veteran quality can be transformed into tier set pieces.
