Long-Forgotten Hippogryph Mount Guide

Updated 20 Mar 2026 | Author: Invord | ~13 min

The Long-Forgotten Hippogryph is one of the most recognizable secret mounts from the Legion expansion, appreciated for its clean, refined design and timeless look. The model combines a classic hippogryph silhouette with subtle arcane accents, soft color transitions, and smooth animations that make it feel natural in any environment. Unlike many mounts that rely on flashy effects, this one stands out through its elegance and balance, which is exactly why it continues to be used by players who value aesthetics over excess.

Beyond its appearance, the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph holds a strong reputation due to its limited availability and competitive nature. It is not a mount you can casually farm or repeatedly attempt without constraints, which naturally makes it much rarer in the game world. Because of this, it is widely considered a prestige collectible — something that reflects both knowledge of hidden content and the ability to act within a narrow opportunity window. Even today, spotting this mount in the open world is a clear indicator that the player managed to complete one of the more unique and time-sensitive challenges in World of Warcraft.

  • Added in Patch: 7.0.3 "Legion"
  • Mount type: Flying
  • Source: Secret mount puzzle
  • Core requirement: Interact with 5 Ephemeral Crystals
  • Repeat attempts: unlimited

How to get Long-Forgotten Hippogryph

Long-Forgotten Hippogryph

The Long-Forgotten Hippogryph mount is a secret mount obtained by interacting with five Ephemeral Crystal objects in Azsuna on the Broken Isles.

At first glance, this sounds rather easy. You just fly around, click five crystals, and collect the reward. In reality, the process can be much more difficult for several reasons. Spawn timing, shared realm competition, special sub-zone locations, and phased versions of the same realm all play a role in how easy or difficult your hunt will be.

Want to skip the long search, phase-hopping, and competition for crystal spawns? Check out our Long-Forgotten Hippogryph boost service and let our team handle the entire hunt efficiently.

Ephemeral Crystal info

Ephemeral Crystals are small purple crystals scattered throughout Azsuna. Although they are not especially large or flashy, they are the entire key to unlocking the mount.

These crystals have a respawn time of 2-8 hours. At any given time, only five crystals will be active on a realm, and all five of them become available at the same time. Players of any level can see and interact with them, so this is not restricted to max-level characters.

Ephemeral Crystal

Clicking on one of the crystals gives you a hidden buff that lasts for 8 hours. This means you have an 8-hour window to locate and click four more crystals. If those 8 hours expire before you complete the full sequence, your progress is lost. The same thing happens if your character dies.

On the other hand, the buff does remain active if you log out or if you leave Azsuna and travel to another zone. That makes it a little easier to pause your hunt or switch characters and return later, as long as the timer has not expired and you do not die.

The first player to successfully interact with the crystals on a realm will receive the Reins of the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph in their inventory. When that happens, the zone-wide chat message “You hear a faint caw in the distance and then silence…” will also appear.

If somebody else beats you to the mount, that does not necessarily mean your run is over. The five crystals you click do not have to come from the same realm. This means you can check other phases, including your server’s Warmode phase and additional realm layers, to continue building your progress.

One thing to keep in mind is that some crystals on a new realm or in a different phase may not be clickable for you. The most likely reason is that they share an object ID with one of the crystals you have already clicked previously. Even so, you should still be able to find enough unique clickable crystals across phases to complete the set of five.

Crystal Spawn Locations

The Ephemeral Crystal has 99 known spawn locations in total. Most of them are covered in the gallery and waypoint dropdown below. A few special cases are handled separately afterward, because they are located in sub-zones or caves that need extra explanation.

For convenience, the waypoint notes also include small descriptions of where to look for the crystal, which is extremely helpful because some spawns are tucked away behind trees, rocks, ruins, underwater terrain, or cave walls.

First of all, make sure you are actually in Azsuna before using any of these waypoints. If you paste or click them while standing in another zone, they will be placed on the wrong map and become much less useful.

There is a direct portal to Azsuna in both the Orgrimmar and Stormwind portal rooms. Another simple option is to use your Dalaran Hearthstone toy and then fly northwest into the zone.

Also, check out the useful add-ons approach for this hunt, because that can make the entire search much faster and far more organized.

Not included in the main waypoint list are the three spawn locations found inside Oceanus Cove. Even though it is technically part of Azsuna, it uses its own separate map, so you need to be inside the Cove itself before the waypoints will make sense.

Oceanus Cove is located near the lower part of mainland Azsuna. One of the three possible entrances is listed below. For this entrance, fly straight past the shipwreck and then turn left to move into the cave system.

  • /way 48.1 50.6 - Entrance to Oceanus Cove

Once you are inside, you can use the following coordinates for the crystal spawn points:

  • /way 50.95, 75.96 - West
  • /way 84, 81.76 - East
  • /way 45.62, 30.3 - North
Oceanus Cove

The other two coordinates that were not included in the main list are located inside Leyhollow Cave. These coordinates will work from anywhere in Azsuna, but they are explained here separately so it is easier to identify the cave entrance before you go inside.

The entrance to Leyhollow Cave can be found south of Azurewing Repose. You will notice several blue dragons in the surrounding area, which helps confirm that you are in the right place.

  • /way 47.88, 24.75 - Entrance to Leyhollow Cave
Leyhollow Cave

Once inside, check the following locations for crystals. This cave does not use a special separate map, so you will mostly need to rely on your minimap and your own orientation while navigating.

  • /way 50.16, 23.44 - Near a large crystal & foliage
  • /way 50.54, 20.37 - Left of a big crystal in the open

Tips

If you run into issues such as not being able to click on a crystal, or if you click all five and still do not receive the mount, one commonly suggested fix is to die and then click all of the crystals again.

With that in mind, whenever you find a crystal, make sure to write down the coordinates or otherwise keep track of the exact location. You may not end up needing that information, but it can become extremely helpful if you lose your hidden buff and need to retrace your route.

If you are helping another player or moving around on a two-seater mount, make sure the passenger dismounts before clicking the crystal. If they remain mounted as a passenger, the interaction can bug out and waste the opportunity.

There are four possible phases on a realm in WoW that can matter for this hunt:

  • Warmode off
  • Warmode on
  • Chromie Time Warmode off
  • Chromie Time Warmode on

Checking all of these can meaningfully improve your chances of finding available crystals, especially if your main phase has already been cleared by another player.

Warmode is a separate phase intended for players who want open-world PvP enabled. Activating it does come with the possibility of being attacked, but in older zones this is usually not a major concern. To turn Warmode on, go to Orgrimmar or Stormwind. You can turn it off again in any rested area.

War Mode on

Chromie Time is another useful layer. It is meant for leveling through older expansions, where zones scale appropriately to your character’s level. It can only be used by characters level 1-80.

Chromie Time will not be available if you are on a level 80+ character, on a class trial, or if you are a brand-new player who does not yet have a max-level character on the account.

You can use the following macro to check whether your character is currently in Chromie Time. If it returns true, then you are in the Chromie Time phase:

/dump C_PlayerInfo.IsPlayerInChromieTime()

To enter Chromie Time, speak to Chromie in either Orgrimmar or Stormwind:

  • /way #85 40.79 80.12 - Orgrimmar
  • /way #84 56.16 17.34 - Stormwind

The campaign you choose inside Chromie Time does not matter. There is only one actual Chromie Time version of the world, regardless of which expansion timeline you select. If you want to disable it later, simply speak to Chromie again.

Useful Add-ons for Hunting the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph

These add-ons are extremely helpful when tracking spawn points and optimizing your search route across Azsuna. While they are not required to obtain the mount, using them will significantly reduce the time spent flying blindly and increase your chances of completing the crystal sequence before other players.

  • TomTom: The core addon for this hunt. It allows you to use /way commands, displays map and minimap markers, and provides a navigation arrow to guide you directly to each crystal location.
  • LFH Waypoints: Automatically adds all known crystal spawn locations by using the /lfhway command. Requires TomTom to function properly and is one of the fastest ways to set up your route.
  • Long-Forgotten Hippogryph addon: Marks crystal spawn points directly on your map and provides additional configuration options to customize how they are displayed and tracked.
  • HandyNotes + Long-Forgotten Hippogryph plugin: This setup places crystal spawn markers directly on your map and minimap. It requires both the base HandyNotes addon and the Hippogryph plugin. Together, they provide a clean visual overview of all potential spawn locations.

For the best experience, it is recommended to combine TomTom with either LFH Waypoints or HandyNotes. This allows you to follow a structured route instead of randomly searching the zone.

Tip: Setting up your add-ons before starting the hunt can easily save hours of flying and prevent missing hidden or hard-to-see crystal locations.
