Deathrunner Mount Guide

Updated 11 Oct 2026 | Author: Invord | ~6 min

The Deathrunner is a spectral cervid whose form seems woven from the mists of Zereth Mortis. Its crimson glow and elegant antlers make it one of the most striking mounts added in Shadowlands. This mount is not a random drop or a rare spawn — it is the result of mastering the unique Protoform Synthesis crafting system, making it a symbol of your journey into the mysteries of the First Ones.

Introduced in patch 9.2.0 "Eternity's End", the Deathrunner is crafted at the Protoform Repository in Zereth Mortis. What makes this mount special is that you receive it almost automatically as part of unlocking the mount crafting system itself. However, behind this simplicity lies a long chain of Cypher research, waiting on timers, and completing story quests. If you want a mount that rewards patience rather than luck, the Deathrunner is one of the most reliable goals in Zereth Mortis.

  • Added in patch: 9.2.0 "Eternity's End"
  • Mount type: Ground
  • Source: Crafted via Protoform Synthesis
  • Time to complete: 10 days (due to research timers)
  • Difficulty: Low (guaranteed acquisition)

How to Get Deathrunner

Deathrunner

The Deathrunner is a unique mount that you receive as a reward for completing the questline that unlocks the Protoform Synthesis system in Zereth Mortis. Unlike most mounts from this zone, you do not need to find a rare schematic or grind reputation — simply progressing through the Protoform Synthesis storyline is enough.

All required materials for crafting this mount are given to you automatically during the final quest of the chain. This makes the Deathrunner a 100% guaranteed mount — no RNG involved, only the time spent on research and quest completion.

Important: All materials for crafting the Deathrunner are provided for free during your first playthrough of the unlock questline. You do not need to farm Genesis Motes or hunt for a schematic separately!

Step 1: Unlock Zereth Mortis

Before you can begin your journey toward the Deathrunner, you must first gain access to Zereth Mortis. To get there, you must have completed Chapter 2 of the 9.1 (Korthia) campaign. The last required quest is Charge of the Covenants. After completing it, you should receive a popup to start the Zereth Mortis (9.2) campaign.

A portal to Zereth Mortis appears on the top floor of Oribos after completing the quest This Old Waystone, which is part of the campaign. If you leave Zereth Mortis before completing that quest, speak to Tal-Inara in Oribos to return.

Step 2: Unlock Protoform Synthesis

To unlock the Protoform Synthesis system, you must complete up to the end of Chapter 3 in the 9.2 campaign. You will receive the quest Cyphers of the First Ones, which unlocks the Cypher Console. The Cypher Console is powered by Cyphers of the First Ones, a currency earned from various activities in Zereth Mortis.

How to earn Cyphers of the First Ones:

To unlock the Protoform Repository, you must progress through the Cypher Console research tree. Keep in mind that research timers take several days to complete:

  • Spend 200 Cyphers to unlock the Dealic Understanding tree (research time: 3 days 18 hours).
  • Spend 220 Cyphers to unlock Sopranian Understanding (research time: 5 days 18 hours).
  • After research is complete, complete the questline starting with Finding Tahli to unlock the Protoform Repository.

The Protoform Repository is located at the following coordinates:

  • /way 68.5 30.1 – Protoform Repository

Step 3: Obtain the Schematic and Materials

The schematic and materials are awarded for completing the quest A New Architect — the final quest of the Protoform Synthesis chain. As a reward, you will receive:

All quest items for this step are found inside the Protoform Repository:

  • The quest lattice is found in a Repository Vault chest in a large chamber.
  • The first Protoform Tool is located on a small table on the northwest wall between two shelves, behind the smaller shelf on the left.
  • The second tool is located on top of a shelf on the northeast wall.
  • The third tool is located in the top cubby of a shelf on the south wall.

For convenience, here are the waypoints for the quest items:

/way #1970 70.6 27.3 Cervid Lattice
/way #1970 70 27.7 Tool 1
/way #1970 71.3 27.8 Tool 2
/way #1970 70.7 29 Tool 3

Step 4: Craft the Mount

After completing the quest A New Architect and receiving all required materials, return to the Protoform Repository at /way 68.5 30.1. Interact with the Servitor Interface, select Deathrunner from the list of available mounts, and click the craft button.

Congratulations — you now have the Deathrunner!

Extra Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Start Cypher research as early as possible: The research timers take nearly 10 days in total. Starting early means unlocking the Protoform Repository sooner.
  • Don't farm materials in advance: You do not need to collect Genesis Motes or find a lattice — everything is provided during the questline.
  • Check for the quest: If you completed Sopranian Understanding but did not receive the Finding Tahli quest, make sure you have finished Chapter 3 of the 9.2 campaign.
  • Deathrunner is the introductory mount: This mount does not require a separate schematic or farming. It is designed as the "tutorial" mount for the crafting system.
  • Don't rush to craft it: Although Deathrunner is the easiest mount to create, you may want to hold off if you want to save Genesis Motes for other mounts that require farming.
  • This mount is account-wide: Once crafted, the Deathrunner is available to all characters on your account.

Useful Addons for Farming Deathrunner

Although the Deathrunner does not require complex farming or rare item hunting, the right addons can help you unlock Protoform Synthesis faster and manage your Cypher research more efficiently.

  • HandyNotes: Shadowlands: Displays rare mobs, treasures, and points of interest on your map. Useful for collecting Cyphers of the First Ones from rares and chests to progress faster through the research tree.
  • Cypher Console Helper (or similar): Helps track your current Cypher research and the remaining time until completion. Allows you to plan when you can start your next research.
  • TomTom / Paste: Quickly set waypoints to the Protoform Repository, quest locations, and Cypher farming spots.
  • World Quest Tracker: Shows all available World Quests on a single panel, helping you quickly identify sources of Cyphers of the First Ones.
  • SavedInstances: Useful if you manage multiple characters and want to track Protoform Synthesis unlock progress on each of them.
  • Leatrix Plus: Quality-of-life improvements like auto-repair and auto-sell junk that save time during long sessions in Zereth Mortis.

Pro tip: Use HandyNotes: Shadowlands together with World Quest Tracker to maximize your Cypher collection. This is especially important in the early stages when every day of research matters.

The Deathrunner is a guaranteed mount, but unlocking Protoform Synthesis requires nearly 10 days of Cypher research timers and a lengthy quest chain.
