Fishing looks simple from the outside, but Midnight gives it more structure than “stand near water and cast”. Fish are tied to pools, zones, recipes, buffs, lures, treasures, collectibles, and Cooking materials, which means the profession can be either a relaxed side activity or a targeted farming route depending on how much attention you want to give it. Open water works for slow leveling, but pools are where most of the useful value sits, especially once you care about specific fish, special effects, and materials used by other systems.
You can learn Midnight Fishing from Drathen in Silvermoon City. Fishing is still a secondary profession, so there is no crafting shopping list or expensive material route here. Train the profession first, equip a fishing rod if you have one, then start working toward the 300 skill cap.
Before leaving the trainer area, buy Angler's Guide from the nearby Fishing supply vendor. Learning this book teaches fish tracking, which lets fishing pools appear on your minimap. This is one of the most important early upgrades for Midnight Fishing, because pool fishing is where most of the valuable catches, recipes, and special treasures come from.
Midnight Fishing levels through normal fishing, not crafting. You can gain skill in open water or from fishing pools, but the two methods feel different. Open water is better for steady skill-ups, while pools are better for targeted fish, recipes, rare pools, and treasure rewards.
The fastest clean route is to fish in the correct zone bracket, move only when grey trash becomes too common, and use pools when they appear near you instead of chasing only pools across the entire map. Pool fishing does not care much about your skill level, but it is usually slower for raw leveling because you spend time flying between spawns.
The zone recommendations are not hard requirements. They mostly indicate when the next zone starts feeling better because you get less useless grey trash from open-water fishing. If you switch too early, you can still catch fish, but your leveling rhythm may be worse than simply staying in the previous zone for a while longer.

Fishing from 1 to 300 takes time even when you use the correct zones. The easiest way to make it less painful is to bind fishing and interaction to a comfortable key, raise WoW sound effects, and rely on the splash sound instead of staring at the bobber for hours.
This does not make Fishing mechanically faster, but it removes most of the clicking friction. If you are leveling while watching something on another monitor, make sure WoW remains close enough that you can react to the splash without missing casts.
Voidstorm is awkward for open-water fishing because the zone has very little usable water. A few spots are deep enough, but you need to stand precisely or the cast will fail. Two usable open-water positions are around 35.86, 47.10 and 35.24, 46.02. At the second spot, standing on the large bone can help you fish without pulling nearby enemies.
The better Voidstorm method is fishing from Oceanic Vortex bubbles. These are rare and can be annoying to find because they do not behave like normal tracked fishing pools. If you find one, use it while it lasts, because Oceanic Vortex has a strong chance to produce Voidstorm fish such as Null Voidfish and Ominous Octopus.
Angler's Anomaly can also create an Oceanic Vortex. This makes the item valuable if you want Voidstorm fish without waiting for a natural spawn.
Midnight Fishing is not only about leveling, fish farming, and Cooking materials. The profession also has its own collectible chase, including a fishing-related mount and several weapon transmog appearances. These rewards are aimed more at long-term farming than fast progression, so treat them as bonus goals while working through pools, Patient Treasures, and Voidstorm fishing routes.
The main Fishing-exclusive mount reward in Midnight is the Nether-Swept Drake. To get it, you first need to find the Nether-Warped Egg, then wait for the egg to hatch. After 7 days, it turns into the mount.
The Nether-Warped Egg can appear through Midnight Fishing-related sources, including Patient Treasure chests, and is also tied to fishing in Voidstorm open-water areas such as Slayer's Rise. Because the reward depends heavily on RNG, the best approach is to farm it while also collecting fish, treasure items, line fragments, and transmog appearances instead of treating every cast as a single-purpose mount attempt.
Midnight Fishing can also reward several Lost weapon appearances. These items are cosmetic, Bind on Equip, and can be sold on the Auction House, which makes them useful both for collectors and players fishing for gold:
Midnight adds 20 fish split across common, uncommon, and rare categories. Every fish can be processed with Thalassian Fillet through Cooking, turning fish into Thalassian Fillet for Midnight Cooking recipes.
Most Midnight fish are mainly cooking or profession materials, but two have special behavior that is worth separating from the normal fish list.

Fish value is not only tied to Cooking. Some Midnight fish feed into Skinning lures, Alchemy transmutes, feast recipes, and Fishing's own lure system. If you are fishing for gold, check which recipes use the fish before vendoring or filleting everything.
Most personal food buffs have alternative recipes that use cheaper generic materials, so unique fish are not always the best target for personal cooking. Feasts are different because they can consume specific fish directly, although herb-based alternatives may still compete with them depending on Auction House prices.

Skinners use several fish to create Majestic Lures. These lures summon Renowned Beasts tied to Midnight Skinning rewards, including Majestic Hide, Majestic Fin, and Majestic Claw. Because these recipes do not have easy generic substitutes, the fish used for lures can stay valuable on the Auction House.

Rare fishing pools are the main reason to track pools while leveling. They can produce lure recipes, line components, motes, rare fish, and special utility items. Do not ignore them just because you are trying to level quickly; several of these rewards are more valuable than the fish from normal open water.

While fishing in Midnight zones, you can occasionally cause a Patient Treasure chest to appear nearby. These chests can contain items such as An Angler's Deep Dive, Bloomline and Glimmerline pieces, cosmetic items, and lure recipes. Watch the area around your character while fishing so you do not miss a chest spawn.
Midnight Angler's Grand Line is a Fishing line assembled from fragments found while fishing in Midnight zones. It does not require a separate profession craft. You build two separate component chains, then combine the finished Bloomline and Glimmerline pieces into the final line.
The line fragments can be fished up naturally and can also be bought or sold on the Auction House. Crafting every stage entirely from the smallest fragments takes a huge number of pieces, so it is usually better to combine what you fish up and buy missing intermediate pieces when prices make sense.

The Glimmerline chain is more demanding because the final stage requires 20x Weak Glimmerline, while the Bloomline chain only requires 5x Weak Bloomline. Check intermediate-piece prices before buying thousands of base fragments.
Fishing rods are crafted by Engineers. The uncommon and rare rods can be bought and sold normally, while the epic rod is Bind on Pickup and must be obtained through a Crafting Order unless you are crafting it yourself. The epic rod also requires Fused Vitality, so treat it as a later upgrade rather than a mandatory leveling item.

Perception is not currently a reliable stat to stack for normal Midnight Fishing. Unlike Mining and Herbalism, Fishing does not clearly show extra Perception-based bonus loot in the same way, and there is no consistent evidence that it improves rare fish rates or meaningfully reduces junk. For most players, a stronger rod is useful because of its Fishing skill bonus, not because Perception suddenly turns Fishing into a rare-material engine.
Fishing has its own craftable lure recipes in Midnight. These recipes are Bind on Pickup and usually come from Careless Cargo or Lost Treasures. Lures increase the chance to catch a specific fish for 30 minutes, while Amani Angler's Ward prevents Blood Hunter spirits from attacking you.
Amani Angler's Ward is the most practical recipe for everyday use if you fish in Zul'Aman or any area where Blood Hunter spirits become annoying. The fish-specific lures are better when you are targeting a particular material for Cooking, Skinning lures, or Auction House sales.
