Mythic+ Deaths & Penalties Guide

Updated 30 Nov -0001 | Author: Kir | ~6 min

Character deaths are the only factor that directly reduces the Timer for completing a dungeon in Mythic+ mode. Your mistakes and lack of preparation, of course, also cause you to lose time — but they don't affect the Timer directly. In this guide, we'll tell you everything you need to know about the Death Penalty in Mythic+: from the raw numbers of seconds lost to the new seasonal conditions.

Mythic+ Death Penalty Overview

Every dungeon included in the seasonal Mythic+ rotation has a Timer set by the developers. Completing a run within the allotted time allows players to receive quality rewards and upgrade their Keystone. Failing the Timer downgrades the key and grants characters fewer Mythic+ points.

And when we talk about timed runs, there's no way to avoid the topic of the Mythic+ Death Penalty — because only player deaths can directly subtract precious seconds from the timer. Each death pushes your group further away from a positive result.

How Many Seconds Are Subtracted Per Death

It's important to note that newcomers taking their first cautious steps in Mythic+ mode don't need to worry too much about the Death Penalty. The reason is that at Keystone levels +2 and +3, this penalty simply doesn't apply, easing the pressure on players, especially those running with PUGs.

However, starting from a +4 Keystone, each death of any character in the group deducts 5 seconds from the Timer. One full wipe — a full 25 seconds, which may very well be enough to miss the dungeon's time requirement.

Death Penalty at Higher Keystone Levels

Since the Mythic+ Death Penalty was introduced into the game, its core mechanic hasn't changed. Regardless of rising dungeon difficulty, the cost of a death remained 5 seconds each.

However, The War Within expansion changed the rules of the game, at least for its first season — all thanks to the Xal'atath's Guile affix, which takes effect starting at +12 keys and amplifies the Mythic+ Death Penalty to 15 seconds.

Group Wipes vs. Individual Deaths

When discussing the cost of a group wipe versus an individual death in a vacuum, it's worth noting that the group factor doesn't increase the penalty — the timer will still lose 5 seconds per death. On the other hand, you can't ignore the fact that a full group wipe will cost time to resurrect, refresh buffs, and at the very least run back to the point where the wipe occurred.

That said, even a single death affects the Timer beyond the penalty itself — a group that loses a player also loses DPS or survivability, depending on the role of the fallen member.

Xal'atath's Guile Explained

Xal'atath's Guile is a powerful affix added in The War Within expansion, working in tandem with the Xal'atath's Bargains affix series. Active from +4 to +11 keys, Xal'atath's Bargains are replaced by Xal'atath's Guile at +12 and above, turning the Harbinger's gift into a curse.

From this point on, each character death costs -15 seconds from the Timer. Simple math: one full wipe will shave over a minute off the Timer — without proper preparation for this affix, it's best not to venture into high keys.

Battle Resurrections in Mythic+

A battle resurrection won't give you back those 5 or 15 seconds on the timer. But it will at least save a character time on the run back and return a combatant to you in the midst of an important fight. However, it's crucial to save this ability for the most valuable players and the most critical moments of the dungeon run — the number of battle resurrection uses in Mythic+ is very limited.

How Many Battle Resurrection Charges Do You Get in M+

From the start of the run, your group has one shared Battle Resurrection charge, passively gaining an additional one every 10 minutes. But be careful: once any character capable of Battle Resurrection uses the ability, they lose the charge along with all other characters who have the ability.

So there's no point in stacking your group with extra Druids, Death Knights, and Paladins — as soon as one of them uses a Battle Resurrection, the others lose the ability.

Which Classes Have a Battle Resurrection in WoW

Only four classes in WoW have access to battle resurrections. This may well change in the future, as developers have been balancing class utility over time, but for now, the list looks like this:

  • Druids (Rebirth) — Instantly revives a target to 100% health without cast time.
  • Death Knights (Raise Ally) — Instantly revives a target to 60% health using Runic Power.
  • Warlocks (Soulstone) — Instantly revives a target to 60% health and at least 20% mana. You can cast it during combat or pre-apply it before a fight.
  • Paladins (Intercession) — Revives a target to 60% health using Holy Power.

Use this list as a reference to make sure at least one of these classes is in your every dungeon run.

When to Use a Battle Res

Using a Battle Resurrection with only one charge available requires careful judgment. You need to assess the situation soberly and understand whether it's worth using the ability or calling for it. Here are the key nuances of using a Battle Resurrection:

  • Use It or Lose It: Since you gain a new charge every 10 minutes, don't hold onto a Battle Resurrection for a dire moment. If your teammate needs a resurrection, even if it's not absolutely critical, and a new charge is coming up soon, why not spend the one you have?
  • The Triage Question: Don't use the ability automatically — set priorities. Don't spend a BR on a DPS if the Tank or Healer is dead; don't spend a BR on other characters if your Shaman/Mage/Evoker is dead and you'll soon need Bloodlust; save the BR for the Healer if the group is dying — a resurrected Healer can mass-resurrect everyone, saving time on the run back from the graveyard.

In all other combat situations, rely on your own instincts or your teammates' calls.

So, we've told you everything you need to know about the Mythic+ Death Penalty system. Good luck conquering M+ dungeons, and don't forget to check out our Mythic+ Timer guide to learn even more useful details.
