How To Get Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent Mount in The War Within 11.1.5

Updated 29 Apr 2025 | Author: Poizy | ~6 min

Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent isn’t just a mount — it’s a legend. With its striking black-and-white design and ethereal glow, this celestial dragon floats through the skies with unmatched elegance. Few mounts in World of Warcraft command the same level of awe and envy (and even fewer are as rare).

What makes this mount truly special isn’t just its looks, but its status. The Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent is one of the most elusive and prestigious mounts in the game, with a notoriously low drop rate. There’s no questline, no achievement — only a chance at glory every time you defeat the world boss Sha of Anger in Pandaria. Alternatively, you might spot it on the Black Market Auction House — but even then, competition is fierce.

Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent - How To Obtain The Mount

Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent

As mentioned above, The Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent comes from Sha of Anger, one of the four world bosses introduced in Mists of Pandaria. It is located in Kun-Lai Summit zone and spawns in the northwest area of Kun-Lai, roughly around the N’Zoth/Kun-Lai Ruins and Sha’s Crater. The Sha is a giant black smokey monster – hard to miss when he’s up!

Any level 35+ character can participate, but realistically you’ll want a high-level character to solo it easily. As of now, Serpent resets weekly (every reset, you can kill and loot it again per character). The mount drop chance is notoriously low: back in the day, it was believed to be around 0.01% – 0.1%. Some sources now suggest it might have been quietly raised closer to 0.5-0.7% in more recent updates, but it’s still very rare.

Locate Sha of Anger and Defeat It

Head to Kun-Lai Summit, Pandaria by taking the portal to Jade Forest (from Orgrimmar or Stormwind portal rooms), then fly to Kun-Lai Summit. The Sha of Anger’s spawn area is around 55, 64 coordinates (the southern edge of the Sha’s Crater). Nowadays, due to cross-realm zones, Sha of Anger is often up frequently somewhere. You might find him standing around or in combat if other players are farming. He has a relatively quick respawn timer (roughly 15-20 minutes). Engage and kill the world boss, who'll most likely get oneshotted.

Repeat Weekly on Multiple Characters

If the The Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent didn’t drop (and it likely won’t for a long while), the key is to repeat this process every week. After you kill and loot Sha on a character, that character is locked out until the weekly reset. Log over to another level 60+ alt, fly out to Sha, kill it again, loot, and so on. Doing this with a whole roster of characters greatly improves efficiency.

Use Bonus Rolls

In Mists of Pandaria, there were bonus roll coins (Elder Charms of Good Fortune for world bosses like Sha). If you have any of those coins still lying around, you could use a bonus roll for an extra chance at loot each kill. However, by now most people won’t have those unless you specifically farm them (you can farm them from treasure chests or rare mobs in Pandaria, but it’s probably not worth the hassle unless you’re extremely hardcore about maximizing your chances!). The bonus roll can award the mount as well. So if you’re willing, you can grind some Elder Charms and use one each time you kill Sha for double loot chances. This is totally optional – many don’t bother, but it is something to note for completion.

Black Market Auction House

If you have a lot of gold and less patience for RNG, keep an eye on the Black Market Auction House (BMAH). The The Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent can appear on it as a listing. When the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent shows up, it will have a starting bid of 20,000 gold. But as the mount is indeed both rare and extremely elite, uou’ll be bidding against lots of other mount collectors, so expect the auction to reach some absurd numbers (like 15-25 million gold!). Another issue is that the mount appears very, very, very rarely so you'll have to manually check dozens of different servers hoping to one day find it listing!

Be Aware of Phasing

Sometimes, especially if you haven’t quested in Kun-Lai, the Sha area might be phased due to the introduction quest with the White Tiger Temple. If you have an issue seeing Sha, make sure you’ve done the quest that allows you into that zone (most level 50+ characters can automatically see it, but on Chromie Time or if not level 30 yet, you might have to do a small intro). In general, high-level characters should see world bosses without issue.

Use Addons for Alerts

If you want, addons such as NPCScan or SilverDragon can alert you when Sha of Anger spawns (treating it like a rare mob). This is handy if you’re multitasking – you can AFK near spawn and get a loud alert when he appears. That said, since the spawn rate is pretty fast and consistent, many just camp or check periodically.

Remember that the patience is key. The Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent is infamously dubbed “Heavenly Onyx RNG Serpent” by some, due to its low drop rate. Keep at it, and don’t burn yourself out. Even doing it casually over a (very) long period gives you a chance eventually.

And keep in mind, if you ever feel unlucky, there’s always 2 extra options for you to get the mount:

🛡 Want to take the wheel yourself? Grab cheap gold for any region, faction, or server and jump straight into the Black Market Auction House hunt. With enough patience (and a little luck), you might just snag that ultra-rare mount you’ve been dreaming about. Just be sure to load up with at least 20–25 million gold as competition can be fierce, and bidding wars are almost guaranteed when something as prized as the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent or other legendary mounts show up!
