Midnight Season 2 offers several ways to catch up, but they do not all deserve the same amount of time or currency. The practical goal is simple: replace the weakest gear first, reach item level 295 quickly, and avoid investing in items that will be discarded almost immediately.
This guide lays out that progression from a returning or freshly leveled character to a Season 2-ready setup. You will get a clear order of actions, explanations for every choice, and a direct path from basic catch-up gear to stronger equipment beyond item level 295.
The route begins with one vendor loop: earn Field Accolades from Ritual Sites or Void Assaults, spend them with Maren Silverwing to replace weak slots, then move into Mythic 0, Delves, and other Champion or Hero sources. The table shows how each source fits into that progression; the next section explains the currency and cache choices before the step-by-step route begins.
| Source | Item Level | Upgrade Track | Best Use | Available |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Field Accolade Adventurer cache | 266 | Adventurer 1/6, up to 282 | Warbound floor for a fresh alt | Now |
| Random Veteran cache | 279 | Veteran 1/6, up to 295 | Cheap rolls while most eligible slots are upgrades | Now |
| Slot-specific Veteran cache | 279 | Veteran 1/6, up to 295 | Fix one known weak slot without RNG | Now |
| Mythic 0 dungeon | 292 | Champion 1/6, up to 308 | Best dungeon base above Veteran this week | Now, weekly lockout |
| Trovehunter's Bounty at Tier 8+ | 305 | Hero 1/6, up to 321 | Highest guaranteed weekly catch-up jump | Now |
| Mythic+ 2-3 or Tier 8 Bountiful Delve | 295 | Champion 2/6, up to 308 | Replace capped Veteran gear with a stronger track | August 18 |
So 295 is not a full set. It is the ceiling of Veteran gear and the second rank of Champion. A 292 Champion item may show three fewer item levels when it drops, but it has a 308 ceiling — and is the better long-term piece.
Field Accolades are the catch-up currency behind the first part of this gearing route. You earn them from Ritual Sites and Void Assaults, then spend them with Maren Silverwing on item-level 266 Adventurer caches or item-level 279 Veteran caches. The currency does not become gear automatically: you choose a cache from the vendor and open it.
Patch 12.1 removed the old Season 1 gear caches and replaced them with the current Season 2 stock. Choose the cache by the condition of your character, not by the highest price.
| Cache | Cost | Binding | Choose It When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adventurer slot cache | 200 Field Accolades | Warbound until equipped | The alt still has several slots below 266 |
| Random Veteran cache | 500 Field Accolades | Bind on Pickup | Most eligible outcomes are upgrades |
| Slot-specific Veteran cache | 750 Field Accolades | Bind on Pickup | You need one exact non-trinket slot |
Start random. Use the 500-cost cache on a character wearing leveling gear or low Season 1 pieces. The price is one third lower than a targeted cache, but the discount matters only while most possible slots are upgrades. Open one at a time, equip the result, then audit again. The 500 cache is an opening move, not the default for an entire stockpile; otherwise, random purchases can continue after most possible results have already become duplicates or sidegrades.
Target the last holes. Choose a slot when a random result has more ways to fail than succeed. Weapons deserve extra care: choose the correct Loot Specialization before opening the cache, then confirm that the slot is not already covered by your weekly Delve map or a realistic M0 drop. Rings, neck, chest, legs, and head are also sensible targeted buys when their current item is far behind the rest of the character.
The Field Accolade route stops short here. There is no current Adventurer or Veteran trinket cache in Maren Silverwing's stock. Use Pinnacle Caches and Hard Prey for more Veteran rolls, then check the M0, Tidebound Grotto Lair, raid, Delve, and Mythic+ loot tables for direct trinket targets. Do not keep opening the random Veteran cache in the hope that a trinket appears.
Start by repairing low slots with Field Accolade caches, then claim the limited Champion and Hero upgrades before spending Mistcrests. The two phases below show where the vendor route ends and where repeatable Season 2 gearing begins.
A stockpile of 10,000 Field Accolades can buy many targeted Veteran caches, but it does not guarantee a literal full set. The vendor has no trinket cache, and every Veteran cache is character-bound. Treat the currency as a fast repair kit for weak armor and weapon slots, then use the weekly sources above for the pieces the vendor cannot provide.
These three focused guides cover the Prey loop, the solo currency farm, and the full Season 2 gearing path after the 295 catch-up breakpoint.
The farm changes. Once the season opens, stop treating 279 Veteran gear as the main farm. It remains useful for weak slots, but repeatable Champion gear starts at or near the same item level and has a much higher ceiling after launch. Your next target is not "295 everywhere on Veteran." It is 295+ on Champion or better.
| Season 2 Source | Drop | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mythic+ 2-3 | 295 Champion 2/6 | Directly replaces maxed Veteran gear and starts on the stronger track |
| Mythic+ 4 | 298 Champion 3/6 | First repeatable drop above the 295 target |
| Mythic+ 5 | 302 Champion 4/6 | Large catch-up jump without entering the Hero drop band |
| Mythic+ 6-7 | 305 Hero 1/6 | Moves the slot beyond the Champion ceiling |
| Tier 8 Bountiful Delve | 295 Champion 2/6 | Solo-friendly 295 source once keys become available |
| Normal Venomous Abyss | 292-302 Champion | Boss progression can fill several slots and tier pieces |
The simplest weekly order is Tier 8 Bountiful Delves for guaranteed solo progress, low Mythic+ for repeatable 295-302 drops, then raid for tier and high-value pieces.
Check first. Veteran Mistcrests exist to bring a useful 279 piece to 295. They are not a reason to keep a weak item once Champion gear is practical. Before each upgrade, compare the slot against your next two realistic activities. If an M0 boss, Bountiful Delve, or low key can replace it soon, keep the crests for a slot with no clean alternative during this reset.
Replace weak slots with 279 Veteran Field Accolade caches, upgrade the pieces you will keep to 295, use the weekly Trovehunter's Bounty in a Tier 8+ Delve for a 305 Hero item, and run Mythic 0 for 292 Champion gear. From August 18, add Tier 8 Bountiful Delves and Mythic+ 2-3 for direct 295 Champion drops.
When spending Field Accolades, start random. Buy the 500 cache when most possible results are upgrades. Pay 750 when you need one exact slot and a random result is more likely to duplicate good gear than replace a weak item on the character. Recheck your character after every cache rather than committing the whole stockpile at once.
No. Season 2 Veteran Field Accolade caches are Bind on Pickup, so buy them on the character that needs the item. The 200-cost Adventurer caches are Warbound until equipped and can be used to establish a 266 floor on another character.
No trinket cache appears in Maren Silverwing's current Season 2 stock. Use Pinnacle Caches and Hard Prey for more Veteran rolls, then target trinket loot tables in Mythic 0, Tidebound Grotto Lair, raid, Delves, or Mythic+.
For long-term gearing, yes. The Veteran item is stronger immediately at 295, but it cannot go higher. Champion starts at 292 and reaches 308, so the Champion piece becomes the better investment once you can upgrade it and expect to keep that slot through early Season 2.
Mythic+, Bountiful Delves and keys, Nightmare Prey, The Venomous Abyss, and Season 2 Great Vault rewards become available. At that point, farm 295+ Champion and Hero gear instead of continuing to build a full Veteran set.
