MW4 Ending Explained

Updated 30 Nov -0001 | Author: Kir | ~9 min

This guide contains full spoilers for the Modern Warfare 4 campaign.

Modern Warfare 4 closes the rebooted Modern Warfare series with the death of Captain John Price. The last two missions run side by side: in Korea, Park and Ko Jin-Hyuk raid the palace to end Commander Ri's coup, while on a snowy mountain road Price escapes the Archer's convoy and kills the man behind the whole war, then dies of his wounds in Ghost's arms. An after-credits scene then shows Laswell erasing Task Force 141 and handing her role to an unnamed successor in the Watcher Program, which leads straight into DMZ. Below we walk through both final missions, explain who the Archer is and what he wanted, list who dies, break down the after-credits scene and cover the questions the ending leaves open.

How the Story Gets to the Ending

Three reveals before the last missions set up the finale:

  • The package is a weapon. The case Price chases from New York to Mumbai turns out to be a single-use directional EMP, the same kind of device that blacked out Hajin before the North Korean invasion.
  • The Archer is behind the war. The Archer, played by Mads Mikkelsen, is Russia's Defense Minister and runs the Konni ultranationalist private military company. He engineered the coup in North Korea and the invasion of the South. In Mumbai he kills Valeria Garza and her cartel and takes Price, Ghost and Gaz prisoner.
  • It's personal. In the mission Escape, the Archer executes Gaz in the cell and reveals that Makarov, whom Price killed in New York, was his son. Price frees Ghost but is recaptured. Gaz's dog tags sit in the safe in that mission (code 8410) and unlock the Never Forgotten achievement.

Decapitation: The Ending in Korea

Mission 15 belongs to Park. With Kal and Ko Jin-Hyuk, and with Ghost helping, he raids the palace to kill Commander Ri Ju-Young, who seized power in the coup. The squad fights through the grand hall, takes a hidden passage behind a portrait, cuts the power and goes in on night vision, then breaches the war room and Ri's office. Laswell ordered the raid to end the coup and recover Price, but Price isn't there.

The mission ends with Park finding Ko alone outside the burning palace. Ko says Korea is his home and he will stay to fight for its future, a strong hint that he means to help lead the country. Park, asked what comes next, seems to be reconsidering his own future in the military.

Greater Good: How Price's Story Ends

The final mission, Greater Good, follows Price after his capture.

The Greater Good mission card in MW4 over the Archer's convoy truck
  1. In the truck. Price sits bound in a Konni truck opposite the Archer on a snowy mountain road. The Archer tells him Korea was a proving ground: six EMP rounds there, and with six thousand he could take Ukraine, Poland, the rest of Europe and England, and then go after Price's friend at the CIA. Price answers that it's a cycle, and they both know how it ends for the Archer.
  2. The ambush. Ghost hits the convoy with an explosion. Price fights a guard for his gun as the truck goes off the road and down a ravine.
  3. The wreck. Price comes to impaled through the stomach by a piece of metal, cuts his restraints and grabs a rifle.
  4. The chase. With Ghost calling over the radio that the Archer is heading east, Price chases him through a blizzard in the forest, fighting Konni soldiers and hearing Gaz's voice in his head.
  5. The fight on the ice. On a frozen lake, Price and the Archer fight hand to hand. Price tells him someone has to make the enemy scared of the dark, and kills him with a knife to the throat.
  6. Price's death. Ghost finds Price lying next to the Archer's body. Price admits it's bad enough. Ghost asks, “Was it worth it?” Price says Gaz was right, and his last words are “Hold the line.” Ghost says it's good to see him again, closes his eyes, takes the Archer's EMP case and walks away across the ice.

Some write-ups say Price uses the metal pipe from the crash. In the cutscene itself, he kills the Archer with a combat knife.

Who the Archer Is and What He Wanted

The Archer is the Russian Defense Minister who secretly ran the Konni PMC and set the whole war in motion. His plan had two layers:

  • A test for a bigger war. Korea was a proving ground for the directional EMPs. With enough of them he planned to cripple Ukraine, Poland and the rest of Europe, all in service of what he calls a straight line to a new Russian empire.
  • Revenge. Makarov, killed by Price in New York, was his son. Executing Gaz and hunting Price were personal.

The son reveal raises a lore question. Makarov's Operator biography from Modern Warfare III (2023) tells a different story about his father's death. The game doesn't explain the difference, and some fans think the Archer was an adoptive or stepfather.

Who Dies in Modern Warfare 4

The campaign has a heavy body count. These are the major deaths:

Character How they die
Vladimir Makarov Killed by Price in New York
Phillip Graves Killed by Price in Hired Gun
Valeria Garza Killed by the Archer in Mumbai
Supreme Leader Ri Seung-Ho Killed in Ri Ju-Young's coup
Pvt. Cho Dies of wounds after the plane crash in Survivors
Kyle “Gaz” Garrick Executed by the Archer in Escape
Commander Ri Ju-Young Killed in the palace raid in Decapitation
The Archer Killed by Price on the frozen lake
John Price Dies of his wounds after the fight

Ghost is the last member of the original Task Force 141 still alive. Laswell, Park, Kal, Dunn and Ko also survive.

The MW4 After-Credits Scene Explained

The after-credits scene appears in the Cinematics menu as “Watcher”, under the Greater Good chapter, so you can replay it there if you skipped the credits.

Laswell at her laptop in a sunlit room in the MW4 after-credits scene

It opens on Laswell in a warm, sunlit room that looks like the Middle East, at a laptop. She logs into a restricted network and permanently deletes the Task Force 141 files one by one: Gaz, Ghost and finally Price, whose profile she lingers on. She then runs a wipe from a USB stick and closes the laptop.

A woman in a dark blazer sits down opposite her, seen only from behind. Laswell tells her that operations are moving into the DMZ, that she has recommended her as her replacement, and welcomes her to the Watcher Program. The scene fades out on Laswell's smile.

What the Ending Sets Up

The after-credits scene leads directly into DMZ. The new Watcher, known in DMZ as Watcher-2, is the handler who sends Operators into the Hajin exclusion zone, where a reactor meltdown has spread radiation across the border region and North Korean forces are moving back in to recover weapons. Her first Operator is killed by Blix, a mercenary hunting Ko. The developers have said later DMZ seasons will expand the map toward Russia.

MW4 is the fourth and final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series, so the ending also closes Price's arc. Most fans expect the next Infinity Ward story to center on Ghost, but nothing has been announced. The full DMZ mode is explained in our MW4 DMZ guide.

Callbacks and Easter Eggs in the Ending

The finale is full of nods to earlier Modern Warfare games:

  • The trophy names quote the ending. Finishing the campaign on any difficulty unlocks “Hold the Line”, Price's last words, and finishing it on Realism unlocks “Was it worth it?”, Ghost's question.
  • “Scared of the dark.” Price's line on the ice echoes Modern Warfare (2019), where he tells Gaz that someone has to make the enemy afraid of the dark.
  • A bookend for Laswell. Modern Warfare (2019) ended with Laswell handing Price the files to form Task Force 141. MW4 ends with her deleting them.
  • Gaz's fate. Gaz also dies in Call of Duty 4 (2007), executed by Zakhaev. Here he is executed by the Archer.
  • Ghost survives. In Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Ghost is killed by Shepherd. This time he is the last one standing, and the knife kill in the snow echoes that game's hunt for Shepherd.
  • The music. Many players hear the Call of Duty 4 theme in the after-credits scene. Stephen Barton, who co-scored Call of Duty 4, also scored MW4.

Questions the Ending Leaves Open

Infinity Ward leaves several threads for DMZ and future games:

  • Who is the new Watcher? Her face is never shown. Fans have suggested Farah Karim, but nothing confirms it.
  • Why delete Ghost's file? Ghost is alive, so wiping his record suggests Task Force 141 is being erased officially rather than just mourned.
  • Where does Ghost take the EMP? He walks off with the Archer's case, and its fate isn't shown.
  • Who leads North Korea now? Ko stays to rebuild, and the game hints he will play a leading role.
  • What happens with Russia? With the Defense Minister dead and EMPs still out there, DMZ's planned expansion toward Russia may pick up the story.
