Hajin has 13 bosses, and in the first week of Modern Warfare 4 they became the most hunted targets in DMZ. Ten are Lieutenants, named fighters from earlier Call of Duty games who hold their own corner of the map, and three are Commanders: the Colossus, the Deathstalker drone and a North Korean battle tank. A Lieutenant pays a 10,000 DMZ Cash bounty and drops a Dog Tag Case that shows your position to every squad, while a Commander drops the rare 3D Printer ingredients that late FOB upgrades need. Below, you'll find where every boss spawns, what each one drops, the keys to their secret loot rooms, how to beat them solo and how the Boss Board challenges work.
Lieutenants have home areas and appear in roughly the same places every match, though some have a second spawn. Commanders roam and can turn up almost anywhere, sometimes more than one at a time. The weapon column shows what each boss carries; it drops as a looted gun of random rarity, and only sometimes as the named signature version.
| Boss | Type | Where in Hajin | Weapon or main reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorani | Lieutenant | Forest of the South Korean Wilderness, between Cheonwang Peak Array and Mirae General Hospital | Marksman rifle |
| The Chemist | Lieutenant | Haneul Nuclear Reactor, inside the radiation | Kastov 762 |
| Jin-Tae | Lieutenant | Heavenly Luck Casino, Cheongun Village | High Roller's Fortune, a gold ISO Nightshade blueprint |
| The Doctor | Lieutenant | Mirae General Hospital | Patriot XMR |
| Bale | Lieutenant | Re-Education Center in Deadtown, or the Chang-san Air Base bunker | Type 73 LMG |
| Iskra | Lieutenant | Cheonwang Peak Array compound | Warlord shotgun, rarely the Widow Maker blueprint |
| Scavenger | Lieutenant | Drives around the map in an LTV | Oris 8.6 marksman rifle |
| Roze | Lieutenant | Roof of the DBN tower in The Grid | Astaroth .57 sniper rifle |
| Jang-Ui | Lieutenant | Upper floors of the Netshin Tech Complex in The Grid | Hyeon Burst assault rifle |
| The Warden | Lieutenant | The Citadel, 14th Political Prison | X-58 Nyx SMG |
| Colossus | Commander | Roams, often in The Grid, Wolves Stadium and near SAM sites | Military Composites, a Legendary 3D Printer ingredient |
| Deathstalker | Commander | Flies over the whole map, most often downtown Hajin City | Prototype RF Module, a Legendary 3D Printer ingredient |
| Tank | Commander | Patrols the roads, most often in The Grid | Nanostructured Alloy and other armor ingredients |
For the rest of the mode, from the FOB to exfil, start with our MW4 DMZ guide.
Every Lieutenant kill pays DMZ Cash and a lot of DMZ XP straight away, even if you never touch the body. The first kill of each one also claims its 10,000 DMZ Cash bounty on the Boss Board. The bigger reward is the Dog Tag Case, which every Lieutenant drops. Extracting with it progresses the Boss Board challenges, and players who carried tags out report about 25,000 DMZ Cash per tag in their After Action Report.
The catch is that the case broadcasts your position on the Tac Map to every Operator in the match, so other squads know exactly who just killed a boss. It counts for whoever extracts with it, including a squad that kills you and takes it. A Lieutenant you killed but whose tag you didn't extract shows as claimed in orange on the board; once you extract with the tag, it turns red.
Weapons are a gamble. Each Lieutenant carries a signature gun, but the named Legendary or Ultra version is a rare drop, and most kills give an ordinary copy of rarity Rare or Epic with a few attachments. Lieutenants can also drop a key to their personal loot room, and the official advice is to check the body for that key when the weapon doesn't drop, because the room usually holds it. Boss blueprints work only in DMZ: they are stash weapons, not multiplayer unlocks, and extracting with one doesn't unlock the base gun at the Gunsmith.
There are three ways to track a Lieutenant down:
Lieutenants can be active whether you hunt them or not, and players report a pop-up on screen when another squad starts a fight with one. Expect company at popular spawns such as the hospital and the casino.
Each Lieutenant has a different gimmick, and their escorts are often more dangerous than the boss. Here is what to expect from each one.
Gorani hides in the forest of the South Korean Wilderness, around a house between Cheonwang Peak Array and Mirae General Hospital. He wears a ghillie suit, and when you get close, decoys that look exactly like him and ghillied snipers pop up out of smoke around the house. Many players call him the hardest Lieutenant. Bring a long-range rifle, plenty of plates and an ammo box, stay behind rocks and look for the laser of his rifle or the Lieutenant icon over his head to tell the real Gorani from the decoys. He drops a marksman rifle and his dog tags.
The Chemist sits inside the radiation at the Haneul Nuclear Reactor, so he is always in the same area. He fights with a Kastov 762 and isn't tough himself, but heavily armored hazmat soldiers guard him. The yellow radiation zone is safe for a short walk, while the red zone breaks a gas mask fast and Rad Blockers only slow the damage there. Find the hazmat suit inside the reactor building first, and you can stay in the red zone for as long as you need. Stims help if your mask breaks. Players doing the Fallen Ember story mission often come through the same area.
Jin-Tae spawns on the upper floors of the Heavenly Luck Casino in Cheongun Village. If the elevators have no power, turn on the generator in the underground parking first, but remember that the noise tells nearby players you are there. He hits hard at close range, so fight him from a distance and clear his bodyguards first. Jin-Tae can drop the High Roller's Fortune, a Legendary ISO Nightshade blueprint with gold camo, and the key to his Private Lounge.
The Doctor guards Mirae General Hospital. He has been found on the roof, on the first floor and in the underground parking, usually with a few armored guards. He is one of the easiest Lieutenants and goes down in about half a magazine. He carries a Patriot XMR, and his key opens the Doctor's Command Office on the top floor of the hospital. Intel on him unlocks through a DMZ Orders chapter.
Bale has two spawns. The more common one is the Re-Education Center in Deadtown, where he waits upstairs behind waves of AI and sentry guns; the harder one is the underground bunker of Chang-san Air Base, where a stealthy approach with a suppressor pays off. He fires a Type 73 LMG and throws smoke. Wait for him to come down the stairs, hit him with Thermite and fight from cover, and in a squad have one player draw his fire while another flanks.
Iskra holds a building in the Cheonwang Peak Array compound. The stairs are full of sensor traps that don't hurt you but call AI to your position, so defuse them or shoot them with a suppressed weapon. Iskra herself runs up and down the stairs instead of pushing you, and she is one of the easier fights. She carries a Warlord shotgun and can drop its Legendary blueprint, the Widow Maker, which players rate as one of the best Lieutenant drops.
The Scavenger, who returns from the old DMZ, is the only Lieutenant without a home area. He drives around Hajin in an LTV, so a marker that moves across the map fast is almost always him. Disable his vehicle or wait for him to stop, and he goes down quickly: he is the weakest Lieutenant. He carries an Oris 8.6 marksman rifle.
Roze waits on the roof of the DBN tower in The Grid, reached by elevators and an ascend rope through an Extreme-threat building, and she has also been seen near Wolves Stadium. Her Astaroth .57 sniper rifle strips most of your armor in one shot and knocks you back, so stay away from the roof edge, or she will throw you off the building. Close the distance instead of trading shots. Her rifle is worth keeping, because it shreds the Deathstalker.
Jang-Ui is the hardest Lieutenant to reach. He sits in a server room on the upper floors of the Netshin Tech Complex in The Grid, an Extreme-threat twin high-rise full of exploding robot dogs, some of them with EMP and freeze effects, trip mines, sentry guns and laser turrets that strip plates. His room is a fortress, so don't push into it: make noise, let him come out, then fight him in the open. Thermite takes out the sentry guns faster than bullets. He carries a Hyeon Burst assault rifle.
The Warden patrols The Citadel in the 14th Political Prison in the north-west. He carries a riot shield and a shotgun, and the prison is crowded with AI and hard to navigate. Two Thermites or a Drill Charge make him drop the shield, and an LMG with armor-piercing rounds breaks through it quickly. He carries an X-58 Nyx SMG.
Commanders are always somewhere in Hajin, but you can't buy intel on them: they appear on your Tac Map and your Team Leader warns you only when one is close. They take little damage from standard weapons, so each needs the right tool. The first kill of each Commander pays DMZ Cash, about 50,000, and extracting after a kill gives rare 3D Printer ingredients. Commanders don't drop dog tags.
The Colossus is a seven-foot armored soldier with a minigun firing depleted uranium rounds and green tracers. You can hear him before you see him, because heavy metal plays when he is near. He is slow, has a huge health pool and keeps chasing you. Keep vehicles or pillars between you: players report he gets stuck trying to path around cars. Thermite, C4 and sustained LMG fire do the most damage, and headshots with a marksman rifle work well. As of the launch patch, Drill Charges deal less damage to him than in Early Access. He often drops Military Composites, a Legendary ingredient for FOB upgrades.
The Deathstalker is an autonomous drone the size of a helicopter, with two machine-gun turrets and rockets. The easiest way to bring it down is a SAM site: capture one as a Side Op and the battery fires at it on its own, as long as you stay close. Otherwise use high-caliber rounds and aim for the weak spot that shows yellow hit markers. Roze's Astaroth .57 and an LMG with armor-piercing rounds both work. The wreck breaks into three pieces, the nose, the body and the tail, and each one is a separate loot container. The Prototype RF Module, a Legendary ingredient, comes from here.
The North Korean battle tank is the hardest Commander. Bullets do nothing, and grenades barely scratch it, so bring a launcher. The RPG-8 and the PILA both work, but one solo player needed about 25 rockets, so pack ammo boxes or fight near an Ammo Cache. In one solo test, a Warhead killstreak bought from the Vendor did most of the damage in seconds. Loot it from three places: the front, the back and the top. It can drop Nanostructured Alloy, which players say goes into the 3-plate vest recipe.
Lieutenants can drop a key to their own named loot room. Players who opened them found lockers, weapon cases with Legendary weapons, including a second copy of the boss's blueprint, and Weapon Manuals: one Private Lounge run turned up an RPG-8 Weapon Manual. Some rooms are confirmed by several players, while others are known from a single early report, and three haven't been found yet. The grid square is the one shown on the key, as with every key in Hajin.
| Loot room | Lieutenant | Grid | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jin-Tae's Private Lounge | Jin-Tae | F4 | Top floor of the Heavenly Luck Casino, on the same floor as the security room |
| The Doctor's Command Office | The Doctor | F5 | Top floor of Mirae General Hospital |
| The Chemist's Secure Armory | The Chemist | I4 | Secured bunker near the boat house of the Haneul Nuclear Reactor |
| Iskra's Control Room | Iskra | F6 | Top floor of the server room at Cheonwang Peak Array |
| Gorani's Rice Mill room | Gorani | D8 | Top of the Rice Mill, reached by parkour |
| Roze's Highrise Armory | Roze | G6 | Top floor of a high-rise in The Grid |
| Jang-Ui's Converted Power Room | Jang-Ui | H6 | Enclosed generator room on the bottom floor of NuriGO Mall, next to the robot dog course |
| Loot rooms of Bale, the Scavenger and The Warden | Bale, Scavenger, The Warden | Not found yet | Not found yet |
Keep a Lieutenant key in your Secure Slot until you can use it. Locations of every other key and keycard in Hajin are collected in our MW4 DMZ keys guide.
Every boss in Hajin has been beaten solo, but a Lieutenant fight eats ammo, plates and Medkits much faster than a normal compound. Solo players who came unprepared lost their first attempts, so pack for a long fight.
This kit covers almost every boss fight:
These habits made the difference in solo boss runs:
Once you pick up the Dog Tag Case, head straight for the nearest exfil. Some players drop the case a short distance from the exfil, so it doesn't mark them while they wait, and grab it again right before the helicopter leaves. Don't leave it far away: items on the ground can be gone if you die. Our MW4 DMZ solo guide covers safe exfils and loadouts for playing alone in more detail.
If you would rather hunt bosses with a pro player in your squad, our MW4 rent a booster service covers DMZ boss runs too.
The Boss Board opens at the FOB after your second DMZ Order. It shows a card for every Lieutenant with its bounty, your kill count, your extracted tags and the intel button, and a second tab for the Commanders. Three long challenges run along the bottom:
The last challenge alone means at least 50 extractions with a tag. The only reward shown so far is a weapon charm, and Infinity Ward promises additional classified rewards for players who focus on Lieutenants and Commanders. Every station at the base and when it opens is explained in our MW4 DMZ FOB guide.
These guides cover the rest of DMZ, from your first deployment to the keys that open Hajin's best rooms.
These are the questions players ask most about the bosses in Hajin.
13: ten Lieutenants (Gorani, The Chemist, Jin-Tae, The Doctor, Bale, Iskra, Scavenger, Roze, Jang-Ui and The Warden) and three Commanders (Colossus, Deathstalker and the Tank).
Yes. The bounty is paid once, but every kill and every extracted tag counts on the Boss Board, and the dog tag challenges need several kills of each Lieutenant.
The Scavenger, Iskra and The Doctor go down fastest. Gorani, Jang-Ui and Bale in the air base bunker are the hardest, mostly because of their escorts and surroundings.
Intel on most Lieutenants unlocks only after a specific DMZ Orders chapter, shown on the Lieutenant's card. Intel on Commanders can't be bought at all.
No. A Lieutenant's blueprint is a stash weapon you can take into later DMZ deployments, not an unlock for other modes.
Not at launch. The only reward shown on the Boss Board so far is a weapon charm for the dog tag challenges.
The tag stays on your body. Whoever picks it up and extracts with it gets the Boss Board progress, even if they didn't kill the Lieutenant.
Only partly. They work in the yellow zone, but in the red zone you need the hazmat suit from inside the reactor.
Any Lieutenant can drop a key to their loot room, but it isn't guaranteed. Rooms for Bale, the Scavenger and The Warden haven't been found yet.
