Voidshards Farming & ilvl 298 Upgrade

Updated 18 May 2026 | Author: Dmitro | ~7 min

Ascendant Voidshard drops were a coin flip when Patch 12.0.5 launched — a chance from every endgame activity and nothing more. The May 13 hotfix replaced that with a clean four-source guaranteed list and pruned everything else down to chance-based scraps. The result is one of the cleanest gearing chases in the expansion so far: pick the highest-paying activities, ignore the rest, finish in a single sitting.

Among every gearing system in Patch 12.0.5, Voidshards are the only track that pays out the same evening — no weekly resets, no RNG ceiling, no respec lock-in. This is the only path that lifts weapons and trinkets to ilvl 298, the absolute Season 1 ceiling. Three hours of clean farming versus twelve of pug roulette comes down to which sources you chase — and the route below maps it out boss by boss and key by key.

Ascendant Voidshard Drop Sources

After the May 13 hotfix, four sources guarantee one shard per completion. Everything else is now low-RNG filler.

Source Drop Rate Cap
Heroic and Mythic raid boss kills 100% per boss Per weekly lockout
Mythic+ completions, key level +10 or higher 100% per run Uncapped
Tier 11 Bountiful Delve chests 100% per chest Coffer Key per chest, refresh daily
Nightmare Prey Champion gear box 100% per box Two per week

Mythic+ is the only source without any cap — neither weekly nor daily. That single fact decides the whole farm strategy below: raid kills and Nightmare Prey are great free shards on Wednesday, but the bulk of your 15–20 will come from spamming the same Skyreach key on repeat.

Why Ritual Sites Are No Longer Worth It

Ritual Sites lost their guaranteed status in the hotfix. Tiers 1 through 4 now drop shards at a reduced rate, and Tier 5 sits only marginally above that. Pre-hotfix, sweat-grinders were chain-completing Tier 1 sites because they were the fastest 100% source in the game. Blizzard correctly read that as unhealthy and stripped the guarantee.

Ritual Sites still hand out other rewards worth chasing on the right week, but as a pure shard farm they are dead — every minute spent on a Tier 1 spawn cycle is a minute that would have produced a guaranteed shard inside Skyreach.

Voidforge System Overview

Voidshards are one slice of a broader system. The full Voidforge guide covers the unlock questline, Nebulous Voidcores, the bonus-roll mechanic, and how every reward path in Patch 12.0.5 feeds into Season 1 gearing — useful background if you're new to the system or want the full progression context before locking into a farm route.

Fastest Voidshard Farm Route

Fastest Voidshard Farm Route

The route sequences three weekly-locked sources first, then leans on uncapped Mythic+ for the bulk. The order matters — raid lockouts and Nightmare Prey are limited resources that expire at next reset if skipped this week, while Mythic+ is always available. The first 60-90 minutes inside raids bank roughly six shards from sources you cannot reuse until next Wednesday, then the rest of the evening is M+ filling the gap:

Step 1

Open Group Finder and filter to Heroic The Voidspire. Join a pug already past boss 1 or 2 — clearing groups need backfills, and you skip the 5-10 minutes a fresh pug spends forming. Expect bosses 1 through 5 to fall in roughly 45 minutes; most players know the patterns by now, and the Heroic clear works even if you've never set foot in the raid before.

The fifth boss, Lightblinded Vanguard, is where the route ends for shard-farming. You walk out with five guaranteed shards — one full Voidcore, banked in under an hour. Crown of the Cosmos is the trap — meaningfully harder than the previous five, and pugs still wipe on it weekly. Drop after Lightblinded Vanguard and move to Step 2; the shard you "lose" from Crown is one Skyreach run away.

Step 2

The Dreamrift is a single-boss instance against Chimaerus. On Heroic at this point in the season it's a ten-minute drive-by — pug groups form fast and usually continue straight from the Voidspire clear, someone calls "Dreamrift next?" and the same composition reforms in 60 seconds.

The fight has real mechanic checks, but at 280+ average ilvl the boss falls over before the second major phase. One guaranteed shard drops from the kill, no setup. Heroic Chimaerus also has a chance to drop the Gaze of the Alnseer trinket — BiS-tier for several specs, so keep the lockout active even after the shard farm is done.

Step 3

With weekly raid lockouts spent, the rest of your shards come from Mythic+ spam — specifically Skyreach. Open Group Finder, list yourself for +10 Skyreach or apply to existing +10 listings, and chain the loop until you hit your target.

Skyreach is the shortest dungeon in the Midnight Season 1 rotation. A clean +10 with a geared group runs about 13 to 15 minutes when you stop optimizing for the timer and just complete the key. +10s are forgiving this season — often closer to a +2 than a real push key, so even mid-ilvl groups complete reliably with a tank and healer who know the route. Magisters' Terrace sits closer to 25 minutes on a clean run; slot it in occasionally to break up the routine, not as a regular substitute.

Three to four runs hit the hour mark — straight ratio of about an hour of M+ per four shards. After Steps 1 and 2 deposit six shards, Step 3 covers the remaining 9 to 14 in roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours of running the same dungeon.

By the way, we can assist you with farming the Mythic+ 10s

March on Quel'Danas

March on Quel'Danas is the third Heroic raid lockout and adds two more guaranteed shards from Belo'ren, Child of Al'ar and Midnight Falls. The catch — pug clears here are noticeably less reliable than Voidspire or Dreamrift, and Belo'ren in particular eats groups that wipe through phase 2.

Treat March as opportunistic: if you find a clearing pug already past the first wipe, take it. If a fresh pug is forming and the average ilvl looks soft, give Belo'ren one or two pulls maximum and bail to Skyreach if it goes badly. Do not commit a full evening to a March pug — your shards per hour drop off a cliff.

Reset-Day Schedule

Pulling all of the above into a single shift on reset day:

  • 15 minutes — Raid Finder Voidspire Wing 1 plus Decimus turn-in (1 shard).
  • 45 minutesHeroic Voidspire to Lightblinded Vanguard (5 shards).
  • 10 minutesHeroic Dreamrift / Chimaerus (1 shard).
  • ~2.5 to 3.5 hours of M+ — Skyreach +10 spam for the remaining 8 to 13 shards.

That is the entire path from zero to a fully Ascendant Voidforged 1H + trinkets loadout in a single sitting. Two-handed weapon users finish faster — 15 shards instead of 20. Either way, the math closes inside one heavy session, no week-over-week gating, no PuG roulette beyond the Voidspire clear.

How Many Voidshards You Need

One Voidcore is five shards, and each fully upgraded weapon or trinket can receive exactly one Voidcore before earning the Ascendant Voidforged tag. The shard math comes out to:

Loadout Voidcores Total Shards
Two trinkets only 2 10
Two-handed weapon + two trinkets 3 15
Two one-handers + two trinkets 4 20

If your spec uses a two-handed weapon, the full ceiling is 15 shards. Dual-wield and one-hand + off-hand specs are at 20 shards. Plan the route around your number, not someone else's.

Weekly Quest from Decimus

Every Wednesday, Decimus at the Voidforge in Voidstorm hands out New Tools, New Heights, which asks you to charge a Hungering Oblivium with three eligible endgame completions. Any mix counts — three Mythic+ runs, three raid bosses, three Bountiful Delves, or a combination of all three.

Decimus is at /way #2405 51.20 68.41 on the Howling Ridge in Voidstorm. The Voidforge area also houses the Bonus Roll vendor and the Voidshard combine spell — bookmark the spot.

The absolute fastest charge each week is the first Raid Finder wing of The Voidspire, called Weapons of the Void. Three bosses, no real difficulty at current gear levels, queue pops fast on most servers. By the time you turn in, the chain hands you a follow-up that instantly rewards your first shard of the week. That is a free shard for under fifteen minutes of effort — never skip the weekly even if you plan to spam M+ all night.
