The Curse of Ula'tek is the story campaign of Patch 12.1, and it moves the Midnight narrative out of Zul'Aman and onto a fog-shrouded island that has been sealed for sixteen thousand years. Zul'jan is dragging the Fang of Ula'tek toward a seal his own ancestors built. His sister Zul'jarra spends the whole patch chasing him, and you spend it holding her army together while the island tries to kill everything on it.
The campaign runs across four chapters and forty-one quests, and it is the key that turns on almost everything else in the patch. World quests, the Vaults of Atal'Utek, the Altar of Corrosion talent tree, the Zul'jarra's Forces renown track and the reward vendor all sit behind campaign steps. Finish it and you walk away with a title, three mounts within reach, and a zone that finally opens up.
The campaign opens in Zul'Aman, not on the island. Your first step is Return to Amani'Zar, which sends you to speak with Liadrin in Amani'Zar Village, and from there A Call for Aid pushes you out to Witherbark Bluff where Malacrass has been busy. Honestly, the Zul'Aman opening is longer than most players expect — nine quests pass before the Coiled Isle is even reachable.
The crossing happens at What Lies Beyond the Fog, which sends you to meet Zul'jarra at Tokka's Landing on the isle itself. That quest sits at position ten of seventeen inside the first chapter, so anyone telling you the island unlocks after chapter two is counting the Zul'Aman prelude as its own chapter. You reach the Coiled Isle partway through chapter one.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Level | 90; every campaign quest is level 90 content |
| Starting point | Amani'Zar Village in Zul'Aman |
| Chapters | 4 storylines, 41 quests total |
| Group content | Altar of Fangs (dungeon) and The Venomous Abyss (raid), one quest each |
| Faction | Zul'jarra's Forces, 20 renown ranks |
Once you land, the campaign runs through three hubs on the Coiled Isle. Tokka's Landing is where you arrive and where most of the early handins sit; the Serpent's Tail sends you north; the Worldsoul Terror is the endgame of chapter three, out east.
| Quest Giver | Coordinates | Where They Come In |
|---|---|---|
| Zul'jarra | 57.8, 47.2 | Tokka's Landing, your arrival point and chapter one handins |
| Zul'jarra | 58.4, 46.0 | Words to Hear, opening chapter two |
| Orweyna | 58.4, 45.4 | The whole Ghosts of the Past chapter |
| Lady Liadrin | 57.4, 49.0 | Delay the Venom, opening chapter three |
| Tak'lejo | 47.0, 31.2 | The Serpent's Tail and the Blistering Terrace |
| Summoner Jawae | 69.2, 64.0 | Fuel the Calling, inside the Worldsoul Terror |
| Strongblood Jak'mo | 69.2, 64.2 | Pushed to the Brink |
| Dak'zor | 70.2, 65.6 | Awakened Evil, closing chapter three |
The campaign is four named storylines, and the game tracks them in that order. Chapter one is the longest by a wide margin; chapter four is the shortest but the only one with group requirements. Below is every quest in every chapter, in the order the game gives them to you, with what each one actually asks.
Seventeen quests, split between the Zul'Aman rescue effort and the first push onto the island. The back half introduces the Serpent's Tail and the Blistering Terrace, and it ends with you finally catching up to Zul'jan.
Six quests, and the shortest chapter in the campaign. This is the archaeology stretch: Orweyna leads you to the main island, and the Crypt of the Denied gives up the history the Amani spent centuries editing. The chapter's title is not subtle about where it lands.
Ten quests, and the chapter where the campaign stops being a rescue mission. Zul'jarra is dying from Ula'tek's venom, and the cure sits in the Whispering Marsh amid the ruins of a battle nobody wanted remembered. The Altar of Wrath sequence replays Azeroth's own memories of what happened here, and then Fuel the Calling asks you to betray and sacrifice injured hunters inside the Worldsoul Terror.
Eight quests, and the only chapter that needs other people. The Vaults of Atal'Utek: Altar of Fangs requires a full clear of the new three-boss dungeon, and The Venomous Abyss requires the raid on any difficulty, which is why the campaign cannot finish during patch week. Raid Finder counts, so you do not need an organized group to close it out.
This is the part worth planning around. The campaign is not a side story you can skip and come back to — four separate systems are gated behind specific quests inside it, and three of those quests sit in chapter four.
The practical read: rush chapter four. Everything repeatable in the zone (the currency loop, the talent tree, the world quests) is switched on by its quests, and every day you spend on chapters one to three without them is a day of renown income you are not collecting.
The Vaults of Atal'Utek are a sub-zone inside the Coiled Isle and the campaign's lasting contribution to your weekly routine. Four activity types run inside: Patrols, Strikes, Incursions and Ancient Foes. Vaults of Atal'Utek: A Toxic Tour makes you do one of each as a campaign step, which doubles as a decent tutorial for the loop.
The Vaults run on their own currency. Corrosive Coin is spent only down there, because the spirits of the Amani inside deal exclusively in that token, and the campaign seeds you with 1000 of it from One Coin Too Many. Coin feeds the Altar of Corrosion, the zone's talent tree, which sells exploration, combat and mobility bonuses.
Two currencies are easy to confuse here, so keep them straight. Corrosive Coin buys Altar of Corrosion talents. Corrosive Soul is a separate looted reagent that feeds Corrosive Powers, the bracer and belt enhancement system.
Both Vault quest givers sit in the same stretch of the complex. Warleader Abdumati holds the unlock quest at 47.2, 60.8, and Er'inye waits at 51.0, 62.6 in the Amani Foothold, which is also where the Altar of Corrosion itself stands.
The Altar is a zone progression system granting exploration, combat, mobility and reward bonuses across the Coiled Isle, spent through a custom talent tree in the Amani Foothold. There is a compounding angle most people miss on the first pass: unlocking more traits also raises the Corrosive Coin multipliers you earn inside the Vaults, shown at the top of the tree. Early points pay for later ones.
Traits are not the same thing as Corrosive Powers, though they share a home. Powers run in Midnight outdoor zones and inside Delves, and once the system is unlocked a projection of the Altar appears at the start of any Midnight Delve so you can re-spec combinations before you drop in.
Getting around the complex has its own trick. Amani Windcallers ferry you between points and can briefly hide you from hostile creatures as you cross the venom pools, and more travel points open up as you work through the Vaults.
Curse Surges are the island's public events, and they are the connective tissue between three separate systems rather than a side activity. Each one builds to a rare elite fight, and every successful Surge opens a Cursed Fishing pool at that same location, which is how the fishing reputation and the combat loop feed each other.
They also carry two renown upgrades. At renown 4 your first Surge boss of the day gains a chance to drop a Corrosive Soul; at renown 8 Surge bosses start dropping Warbound Veteran equipment on a daily chance as well. The weekly Turn Back the Surge pays 1000 reputation on top.
Corrosive Souls come from a wider net than the Surges alone: Vault activities and bosses, the Prey boss Ral'Kala, the Nymrissa Wavecaller lair, Bountiful Delves and Prey hunts. Spend them at the Altar through the Corrosive Codex, or hand them to the Skull of Er'inye vendor in exchange for Corrosive Coins.
Zul'jarra's Forces is the patch's renown faction, and its flavour is the one genuinely new thing about it: Shadowpine, Witherbark, Revantusk and Amani soldiers acting as one army under Zul'jarra. Twenty ranks, with Jan'sari the Watchful holding the goods at Tokka's Landing.
Two mounts, a pet, a toy, a title and four ensembles sit on the track. The mounts land late, at ranks 17 and 19, so this is a full-season chase rather than a first-week one. Rank alone is not the whole gate either: every collectible carries a Voidlight Marl price on top of the renown requirement.

| 19 | Violet-Backed Skyfang (mount) |
| 20 | Hash'ura title; Mantle of Nalorakk; Axe of the Amani |
The four ensembles at rank 18 are split by armor type, one per class group: Vestments of Jan'alai's Chosen for cloth, Battlegear of Halazzi's Chosen for leather, Chainmail of Akil'zon's Chosen for mail, and Warplate of Nalorakk's Chosen for plate. Each is named for one of the original Zul'Aman animal bosses, which is a nice touch if you ran that raid the first time around.
Rank 4 and rank 8 are the two that change how you play the zone rather than what you wear. Both upgrade Curse Surge bosses — first with a daily Corrosive Soul chance, then with Warbound Veteran gear drops.
Captain Tokka is the zone's second reputation and runs on a completely different track from Zul'jarra's Forces. His ship was eaten by the Great White Serpent and his crew corrupted by Ula'tek's curse, and he trades the secrets of venom fishing for help getting even. You meet him during chapter one at Tokka's Landing.
His reputation ladder tops out at a standing called Bloodsworn Crew, tracked by Captain Tokka's Crew. Cursed Fishing itself opens up through Curse Surge completions, which seed the fishing pools, and renown 5 with Zul'jarra's Forces sells the lure recipe that makes the whole thing worth doing.
The four campaign chapters are not the whole zone. Eleven more named questlines run on the Coiled Isle, and several of them carry rewards the campaign itself does not.
On top of those, the zone runs a rotating layer of dailies and weeklies. The one worth diarising is Turn Back the Surge, a weekly that pays 1000 Zul'jarra's Forces reputation on its own. Nothing else in the zone comes close per completion.
Others in the rotation include Mixing Mysteries and Prey: Anguish from Beyond as dailies, plus a rotating set of gathering and culling quests around the fishing pools: Tailing the Tlhapi, Culling the Killifish and Dogging the Darters among them.
Ten achievements track the campaign and the zone around it. The Curse of Ula'tek is the campaign completion itself, and it wants the storylines in both Zul'Aman and Atal'Utek, so the Zul'Aman opening counts toward it too.
| Achievement | Criteria |
|---|---|
| The Curse of Ula'tek | Complete the storylines in Zul'Aman and Atal'Utek |
| Assault the Vault | Meta: complete the Vaults of Atal'Utek achievements |
| Fully Corroded | Unlock every talent point at the Altar of Corrosion |
| Pro Poison Patroller | Complete 250 patrols within the Vaults of Atal'Utek |
| Captain Tokka's Crew | Reach Bloodsworn Crew standing with Captain Tokka |
| Tokka's Terrible Trials | Meta: complete the Captain Tokka fishing achievements |
| Angler of The Coiled Isle | Catch every fish from the Coiled Isle |
| Treasures of the Coiled Isle | Discover the hidden treasures across the Coiled Isle |
| Explore the Coiled Isle | Reveal the covered areas of the zone map |
| The Coiled Isle Safari | Collect every wild pet in the Coiled Isle |
Pro Poison Patroller is the long one. Two hundred and fifty patrols is a season-length commitment, and it starts counting the moment the Vaults open, which is another argument for pushing chapter four early.
Forty-one quests across four chapters. Chapter one is seventeen quests, chapter two is six, chapter three is ten and chapter four is eight. Most of it is solo content you can clear at your own pace on patch day.
No — one chapter four quest requires a Venomous Abyss raid clear, and the raid does not open until Season 2 starts the following week. Everything up to that point is available from patch day.
In Zul'Aman, not on the Coiled Isle. Return to Amani'Zar sends you to Liadrin in Amani'Zar Village, and nine quests later What Lies Beyond the Fog takes you across to Tokka's Landing on the island.
Yes. World quests unlock from Nature of Her Wounds, the second quest of chapter four. The Vaults of Atal'Utek and the Altar of Corrosion are gated behind chapter four quests too.
Only twice. One quest needs a full Altar of Fangs dungeon clear, and one needs the Venomous Abyss raid on any difficulty, so Raid Finder is enough. The other thirty-nine quests are solo.
Hash'ura, from renown 20 with Zul'jarra's Forces rather than from the campaign itself. The campaign starts the reputation and the Skybridge quests in chapter one pay the first 200 of it.
Indigo Coiled Horror at renown 17 and Violet-Backed Skyfang at renown 19, both from Jan'sari the Watchful. A third, Spirit of Tok'jara, comes from a questline that Du'gal opens in the Vaults at renown 10.
