Tyrannical and Fortified — just how much pain is packed into those two words, any Mythic+ enthusiast will tell you. Even after undergoing a series of changes, both affixes are still very much in the game, and starting at a certain key level they form a particularly explosive combination that can be tough to handle even for seasoned veterans. In this article, we'll break down everything you need to know about the Tyrannical affix: its main dangers, the best team compositions to counter it, and the tactics to time your Tyrannical run.
The Fortified affix shifts the focus onto regular mobs, turning nearly every one of them into an elite assassin capable of wiping the entire group with a single cast that slips through. Tyrannical, on the other hand, massively empowers bosses (+25% health and damage), making fights against them longer, draining your resources more heavily, and causing mechanics to overlap in ways that create absolutely extreme combinations. On top of that, every boss minion also receives a 15% buff.
With the Tyrannical affix, bosses stop being temporary obstacles on your path that you simply need to survive while your DPS chips away at the enemy's health bar. To defeat almost any boss under the Tyrannical buff, you need to execute the tactics flawlessly.
In the text below, we'll share some key tips that may come in handy during your runs with the Tyrannical affix. And to learn more about the affix that affects trash in dungeons, check out our separate guide dedicated to the Fortified affix.
The Tyrannical affix radically shifts the threat priorities your group will have to face. In most cases, the main things you'll be fighting against are:
The Tyrannical affix brings dungeon boss fights closer to raid encounters, demanding heightened concentration and smart resource management from your group. Make the most of your time at Keystone levels +7 to +11 to thoroughly learn the ins and outs of this affix.
Tyrannical and Fortified are two totally different Mythic+ modes when it comes to the logic of distributing your cooldowns. Tyrannical forces you to spend your major CDs on the boss — a massive slab of health with mechanics — and its minions, whereas on Fortified, the boss is more of a welcome break: a chance to rest, heal up, and catch your breath. As for cooldown distribution depending on the active affix, take a look at the table below.
| CD type | Tyrannical | Fortified |
|---|---|---|
| Bursts | Ideally, sync your personal bursts with Bloodlust/Heroism. Most often, you'll use them in the first seconds of the fight, or at 20–30% of the boss's health to quickly push through the most dangerous mechanics. | In most cases, you'll use them on cooldown, without saving them for bosses. If you have bursts available to speed through a boss fight, don't hesitate to pop them. |
| Defensive CDs (personal) | Don't use defensive CDs "just in case." The best option is to pop them for specific painful boss casts. | Save them for the start of pulls to have a better chance of surviving mass damage. Alternatively, you can hold CDs for especially dangerous trash casts. |
| Healer CDs | Strictly assign your strongest CDs to damage waves, just as you would in a raid. | Save your cooldowns for tank mistakes or emergency healing against critical damage spikes from mobs. |
In any case, try to use your cooldowns as often as possible — don't let them sit idle. In a dungeon, you simply don't have enough time to save your strongest abilities for the 'perfect' moment.
Putting together a group for Tyrannical is radically different from assembling one for Fortified. To handle this affix, you don't need DPS who 'pad overall damage' while forgetting about focus and priority targets.
Depending on the specific Mythic+ season, the functionality required from a tank in dungeons can vary. Most often, the priority will be either the tank's mitigation capabilities, allowing them to passively withstand massive amounts of boss damage, or a broad toolkit of abilities to survive so-called 'tank-busters' from the boss.
Regarding the current Midnight season, the top tanks include exactly the classes with high mitigation levels — Druids, Monks, and Death Knights. All of them handle the enormous baseline boss damage very well, even if they don't necessarily boast a perfect kit for dealing with 'ank-busters.
When picking a healer for Mythic+ during the Tyrannical affix, keep in mind that you need champions of mana management — those capable of keeping the group healed through drawn-out boss fights. A huge plus is the ability to sustain AoE healing on allies and help the tank cope with the increased damage from the boss and its minions.
In the current Midnight season, the top three healers are Monks, Shamans, and Discipline Priests — the most comfortable classes in the current meta.
DPS during Tyrannical should focus on the boss and priority minions — the choice should always be made in favor of classes and specializations capable of pouring massive amounts of single-target damage. AoE damage experts are better saved for Fortified weeks—that's where they'll have a field day.
The current Midnight meta favors melee fighters first and foremost (with the exception of Evokers). Demon Hunter, Death Knight, Warrior, Rogue — with these classes, you'll be ready for the most dangerous and drawn-out fights in Mythic+.
Before attempting to time a key under the Tyrannical affix, don't forget to check your gear and talent build:
That said, even during the Tyrannical affix, these targeted adjustments can depend on the specific dungeon.
At its core, the Mythic+ formula at high levels is fairly straightforward — until the affixes start acting at the same time. While Fortified is active, you save time on bosses and lose it on trash. On the Tyrannical affix, it's obviously the other way around.
The golden rule of the Tyrannical affix is big trash pulls, since there's no damage and health buff on them. This is the perfect zone for saving time on the timer. The key rules for your runs:
Save every second that can help you get through the main challenge of Tyrannical more easily — the bosses.
Chain-pulling is a classic tactic used by many tanks in Mythic+, allowing the group to save time by transitioning to a new trash pack without waiting for the last mob from the previous one to die. This approach can also be used during the Tyrannical affix by starting the boss fight while simultaneously dealing with the remnants of weak mobs from the previous pack. However, there are situations where you need to enter a boss fight without any extra enemies on your shoulders.
| Time to Chain-Pull | Time to Reset |
|---|---|
| The healer has enough mana and no cooldowns on key abilities, and the group has defensive abilities available. | Major bursts and cooldowns are still recovering and won't be ready by the start of the boss fight. |
| You don't want to lose buffs and resources built up during combat. | The boss moves through an area with unnecessary trash, risking seriously complicating the fight. It's better to wait until it reaches a clear zone. |
| The remaining mobs have low health and don't have any dangerous casts in their arsenal that could threaten the group. | The healer is out of mana — starting a drawn-out Tyrannical fight in that situation is a death sentence. |
The best thing you can follow when choosing between chain-pulling and resetting is communication. Sometimes, even if your teammates are low on mana or the cooldown situation isn't ideal, you can still trust them if they're ready for the fight. Talk to each other — and your Mythic+ runs will become much smoother.
