Beast Mastery is the Hunter that lets your pet do the dying while you shoot from forty yards away. It is the classic leveling spec for a reason: the pet holds every mob, your whole rotation fires on the move, and almost nothing lays a finger on you. Pull a camp, point the pet at it, and rain shots while it tanks. Downtime is close to zero.

Build, the 80-to-90 talent path, rotation, stats, race, the best pet, and your consumable list all live here. Run both and you cross into 90 already playing like a capped Hunter.
Hunters carry three specs, and all three deal damage. Beast Mastery and Marksmanship shoot from range; Survival fights in melee. For a smooth solo climb Beast Mastery is the pick — the other two are still worth a look before you settle in.
Beast Mastery solves the two problems that slow every other leveler: taking hits and standing still. Your pet tanks everything you send it at, and a quick Misdirection nails the whole pack's threat onto it, so mobs sprint past you to chew on the pet instead. You barely take damage at all.
Then there is the mobility. Every Beast Mastery button works while running, so you never stop moving to deal damage — you kite, quest, and shoot in one motion. The pet also self-sustains through Mend Pet, and on a bad pull you have a wall of defensives to fall back on. Few specs feel this safe this early.
Marksmanship is the other ranged option, and it hits harder on a single target than Beast Mastery does. The trade is comfort. It leans on cast-time shots that root you in place, and it has no pet to tank for it, so you spend more of every fight taking hits and standing still. It levels fine — just less smoothly.
Survival is the melee spec, built around a spear and a pet at your side. It is genuinely strong and a lot of fun, but stepping into melee range throws away the untouchable safety that makes ranged leveling so painless. Pick it if you want the melee playstyle. For the fastest, safest clear, stay ranged.
Race barely moves the needle while leveling, so lead with the look you want. Horde has the strongest pick for Beast Mastery in the Orc: Blood Fury is a big on-demand attack power burst, and the racial Command even buffs your pet's damage, which is half of what you do. Troll is the runner-up with Berserking for a haste spike.
Alliance splits between two solid choices. Night Elf brings Shadowmeld, which drops combat to reset a pull gone wrong and doubles as a free feign. Dark Iron Dwarf offers Fireblood, a burst that also clears every debuff off you. None of them changes your pace much — the Orc's pet bonus is the only edge worth chasing.
Midnight Leveling Guide (1-90)You are never stuck with a bad pick in Beast Mastery's leveling tree. Respec anywhere out of combat, at no cost. Try things freely as you go. Everything is bundled below: the one-click build, the hero tree to run, and the point to spend at each level from 80 to 90.

At level 71 you unlock Hero Talents, and Beast Mastery takes Dark Ranger for leveling. The tree bends your Black Arrow and auto shots toward shadow damage and adds a stream of extra procs, which quietly lifts your pack-clearing throughput without a single new button to press. More passive damage on top of an already low-effort rotation is exactly the leveling trade you want. The other tree, Pack Leader, is a fine alternative and leans harder into your pet.
Each of Midnight's ten levels, 81 to 90, drops a talent point in your lap. The lion's share go to Nature's Ally, Beast Mastery's new Apex Talent at the foot of the tree, and the remainder fill your class and hero rows. Take them like so:
Under 80, weight your points into the spec tree. Grab Kill Command and the Beast Cleave nodes early so your pet mows through packs, then add the Barbed Shot and Frenzy sustain. Everything past that leans toward the imported build.
Switch War Mode on for the experience boost and three PvP slots unlock alongside it. Beast Mastery barely notices them while questing, so treat these as quality-of-life picks:
Your leveling rotation is short and hard to mess up, and the pet does most of the heavy lifting. Send it in first, glue the pack's threat to it, then hold your position and fire. Single target, top to bottom:
Packs barely change the plan. Gather them onto the pet with Misdirection, hit Wild Thrash to switch on Beast Cleave, then let Kill Command and Barbed Shot splash across the whole group under Bestial Wrath. Keep Mend Pet up on the big pulls so your tank never drops. Since every bit of this happens from range, you take almost nothing back.
Item level trumps secondary stats nearly every time you level, so equip the higher number even when the secondaries look wrong. Fall back on this order only when two drops are neck and neck:
Agility is the stat that scales your damage, so grab more of it wherever you can. Mastery heads the secondaries because it buffs your pet, and your pet is a big slice of your total output. Critical Strike and Haste sit just behind; on single target alone, Haste nudges ahead. Versatility comes last.
Keep these Midnight consumables active across the 80-to-90 stretch. Each one is on the Auction House, so you grab them in one pass instead of farming:
One piece of gear is unique to you, and it is not gear at all — it is your pet. Tame a Clefthoof and keep it specced Ferocity; the family takes less physical damage and soaks more of your healing than any other, which makes it the sturdiest tank a leveling Hunter can field. Any Clefthoof does the job, and they roam in numbers from level 10 on, so grab one early and never look back.
A neat interface is one of the sneakier leveling upgrades you can grab. Beast Mastery tracks pet threat, Barbed Shot charges, and mouseover swaps while you kite, so a few smart macros and a lean addon set keep you shooting instead of digging through your bars.
Bind a mouseover interrupt before anything else. A simple Counter Shot macro locks down a caster the moment you hover it, no target swap and no global burned bouncing back. It is among the best macros a ranged leveler can carry, and your first dungeon makes it a must-have.

Second, a single-button burst macro. Pressing it triggers Bestial Wrath and both trinkets at once, so every cooldown lands together on one pull rather than drifting apart. Hold it for elites, rares, and the thick packs where the burst genuinely swings the fight.

The third is your pull button. A one-press Misdirection pointed at your pet dumps threat onto it with no target swap, so you tag an entire camp and every mob sprints past you to the pet. That single macro is why Beast Mastery pulling feels so effortless.

Best Midnight AddonsFor most players, yes. Your pet tanks everything, every ability works while moving, and you take almost no damage, which adds up to one of the safest and fastest solo climbs in the game. Marksmanship hits harder on a single target but roots you in place, and Survival is melee. Beast Mastery is the low-stress default.
Beast Mastery for comfort, Marksmanship for raw single-target damage. Beast Mastery fires everything on the move and has a pet to tank, so it feels smoother and safer against packs. Marksmanship leans on cast-time shots and has no pet, so it kills big single targets faster but takes more hits. Most levelers prefer Beast Mastery.
At level 71. Take Dark Ranger for leveling, since it adds passive shadow damage to your Black Arrow and auto shots with no extra buttons to press. You can respec to Pack Leader later at no cost.
A Clefthoof, kept on the Ferocity spec. It takes less physical damage and receives more healing than any other pet family, which makes it the toughest tank you can field while leveling. They are common from level 10 onward, so tame one early.
