Devastation is the Evoker built to delete a pack in a single breath. It is a ranged caster with uncapped area damage, so the more mobs you tag, the more the whole camp melts together under one Pyre. For a Midnight leveling run that scales beautifully — pull half a hillside, breathe fire, and the cluster falls at once. Short defensives keep it safe. Renewing Blaze and Obsidian Scales heal and armor you through pulls that would flatten a squishier caster.
The parts that apply to every class sit in our Midnight leveling guide: your questing route, when dungeons beat quests, and what to do at fresh 80. This page handles the dragon. Build, the talent path from 80 to 90, rotation, stats, race, and the consumables you keep running are covered right here. Fly them side by side and you land at 90 already fluent in the spec.
Evokers carry three specs, and only one is built for solo speed. Devastation is the ranged damage dealer; Preservation heals and Augmentation buffs a group instead of killing on its own. For questing, Devastation is the clear pick, and the other two still earn a mention before you lock in.
Devastation front-loads huge burst and, better still, does it to entire packs at once. Your area damage has no target cap, so a Pyre that hits four mobs hits fourteen just as hard. Tag a whole camp, land a high-rank Fire Breath — and the group dies together instead of one at a time.
Mobility and safety round it out. Hover lets you cast every spell while moving, so you kite and quest without dropping a single global. Between the Soar dragonriding racial, short defensive cooldowns, and self-healing baked into the kit, an overpull is rarely fatal. You fly to the next objective, not run.
The other two specs trade solo damage for a group role. Preservation is the healer, and a healer queues for dungeons instantly; if your plan is wall-to-wall instance spam, that no-wait queue can out-pace open-world questing on its own. It kills slowly out in the world, though, so it is a dungeon tool rather than a questing spec.
Augmentation is the odd one out. It is a support spec that pumps other players' damage, excellent in a group and genuinely weak alone — half its kit does nothing with no allies to buff. Level as Devastation and treat Augmentation as a max-level playstyle, not a leveling one.
There is no race choice to agonize over. Evokers are Dracthyr and nothing else, so the only real decision is which faction you want the character parked on. Both sides play identically for leveling.
What every Dracthyr shares matters more than a racial ever would. Soar gives you dragonriding-style flight from the start, which turns the long stretches between quest hubs into a few seconds of gliding. It is the strongest built-in leveling perk any class gets — and you have it the moment you roll the character.
Midnight Leveling Guide (1-90)Devastation's leveling tree forgives mistakes. No choice is final. Out of combat you respec anywhere on the map for free, so poke at different picks whenever you feel like it. Here is everything in one place: the one-click import, the hero tree to lock in, and the point to take at each level from 80 to 90.

At level 71 you unlock Hero Talents, and Devastation takes Scalecommander for leveling. The tree turns Deep Breath into a steerable strafing run and layers extra burst onto your opener, which is exactly what a pack-clearing solo spec wants. It also hands you movement and utility that make big pulls smoother. The other tree, Flameshaper, leans into sustained single-target fire and pays off better at max level than while leveling.
The ten Midnight levels each hand over a talent point, 81 through 90. Most feed Rising Fury, Devastation's new Apex Talent anchoring the bottom of the tree, while the rest patch up your class and hero rows. Spend them in this sequence:
Below 80, lean into the spec tree. Prioritize Pyre and the Dragonrage burst window, then grab the Essence and Fire Breath nodes that fuel your AoE. From there, steer toward the imported build.
Flip War Mode on for the extra experience and three PvP slots come with it. Evoker's list is thin, yet these three smooth out questing:
Your leveling rotation barely changes between one mob and a full pack, because your best buttons are area damage anyway. The plan is to tag everything, land your empowered spells, then spend Essence while the group burns. Single target, top to bottom:
Packs are where Devastation shines. Tag the group with Azure Strike, hit a high-rank Fire Breath, then spam Pyre until everything is gone; the uncapped damage means a bigger pull is just a faster clear. Drop Deep Breath across two or more targets whenever it is up. Use Hover to keep casting on the move, and lean on Renewing Blaze plus Obsidian Scales when a mass pull gets spicy.
For most of your leveling, a bigger item level outweighs any secondary spread, so wear the higher-ilvl drop even when its stats are off. This order only matters when two pieces are almost dead even:
Intellect drives your damage. More of it on any piece is a straight upgrade. Haste tops the secondaries because it accelerates casts and Essence, the engine the whole spec runs on. Critical Strike follows close behind; Mastery and Versatility bring up the rear.
This is the Midnight consumable set to keep running from 80 up to 90. All of it is on the Auction House, so a single shopping trip beats farming any of it:
Reserve the flask and combat potion for dungeons and elite fights. Oil and food run cheap, so there is no reason to ever let them lapse.
Cleaning up your interface is a quietly large leveling upgrade. Devastation runs on empowered casts and fast mouseover swaps, so a couple of tight macros and a slim addon set keep you breathing fire instead of scanning your bars.
Bind a mouseover interrupt first. A short Quell macro shuts down any caster you hover, with no target swap and no global lost bouncing between targets. For a caster it is the highest-value bind on your bars, and your first dungeon proves it instantly.

Then a one-press burst macro. One tap launches Dragonrage and both trinkets together, so all your cooldowns hit the same pull rather than sliding out of alignment. Save it for elites, rares, and the packed groups where the extra output truly matters.

The last one is for pulling. A mouseover Azure Strike tags a single mob at range and peels it off a group without spending your whole rotation, which keeps things tidy when you are weaving through crowded quest zones.

There is no Devastation-specific addon pack you must install; the usual leveling staples cover it. A quest tracker that auto-completes turn-ins, a clean cast-and-cooldown display so your empower ranks land right, and auction tools that keep consumables stocked handle the essentials. Our full Midnight addon guide details the whole list and the settings worth adjusting.
Best Midnight AddonsYes, and it is not close for solo play. Devastation brings uncapped burst AoE, strong mobility, and self-healing that makes big pulls safe. Preservation heals and Augmentation supports a group, so both fall flat on their own. Level as Devastation and you get one of the fastest questing experiences in the game.
Only Preservation, and only for dungeons. A healer queues instantly, so wall-to-wall instance spam can out-pace questing. Augmentation is a pure support spec and genuinely weak alone, since much of its kit needs allies to buff. Out in the open world, Devastation is far faster than either.
At level 71. Take Scalecommander for leveling, since it turns Deep Breath into a steerable burst and adds power to your opener. You can respec to Flameshaper later at no cost.
Dracthyr, and only Dracthyr, on either faction. There is no racial to weigh, but every Dracthyr gets Soar for dragonriding flight from level one, which is the best built-in leveling perk of any class.
