Havoc is the Demon Hunter you bring when you want packs to die on contact. It opens with a wall of fire and a beam of fel energy, heals off the kills, and outruns anything that gives chase. For leveling through Midnight, that blend is hard to beat: heavy front-loaded AoE, almost no downtime between fights, and a panic button that resets a bad pull in seconds.

Demon Hunters carry three specs in Midnight, and the new one changes the old answer. Havoc and the brand-new Devourer both deal damage; Vengeance tanks. For raw leveling speed Havoc still wins, but it is worth knowing why before you commit.
Havoc front-loads its damage harder than almost any spec in the game, and that one trait matters most while leveling. You open with Immolation Aura, Eye Beam, and Blade Dance, the pack loses most of its health before it reaches you, and you clean up the rest. Bigger pulls are better pulls.
The sustain comes for free. Shattered Souls drops healing fragments off your kills, and Soul Rending turns a slice of your damage into leech, so you rarely stop to eat. Add the best mobility in the game (Fel Rush, Vengeful Retreat, a double jump, and Glide) and you spend more time killing than walking.
Two other specs share the class. Midnight added one of them. Devourer is the new Void-themed DPS spec, a mid-range hybrid that weaves in and out of melee. It levels fine and it is genuinely fun, but the rotation is busier and the kit less forgiving than Havoc's, so it is the pick for players chasing the new toy rather than the fastest clear.
Vengeance is the tank. It kills slower in the open world, yet it is close to unkillable and it queues for dungeons instantly. If your plan is wall-to-wall dungeon spam, flipping to Vengeance for the instant queues can beat questing as Havoc outright. For everything else, Havoc is faster.
Demon Hunters are no longer locked to two races. Midnight opened the class to Void Elves on Alliance, so the roster is now Blood Elf for Horde and Night Elf or Void Elf for Alliance. Honestly, the gap between them is small enough that you should pick the one you like looking at.
If you want the marginal edge, here it is. Horde's Blood Elf brings Arcane Torrent, a 15-Fury burst that doubles as an AoE silence. Alliance's Night Elf gets Shadowmeld to drop combat and reset a bad pull, plus Touch of Elune for a passive crit or haste bump. The new Void Elf adds a short blink and a passive Void-damage proc, the most leveling utility of the three.

Midnight Leveling Guide (1-90)Havoc's leveling tree is forgiving, and you are never locked in. You can swap talents anywhere in the world as long as you are out of combat, so there is no harm in experimenting with picks as you go. At level 71 you unlock Hero Talents. Take Fel-Scarred. It builds your whole kit around Metamorphosis, firing off Demonsurge bursts and empowering your Eye Beam and Immolation Aura while you are transformed. More demon-form uptime means more burst and more leech, exactly what a solo leveler wants. The other tree, Aldrachi Reaver, is stronger in organized groups.
Midnight adds ten levels, and every one from 81 to 90 hands you a fresh talent point. Most of them pour into Eternal Hunt, the spec's new Apex Talent at the bottom of the tree, while the rest top up your class and hero rows. Grab them in this order:
Before 80, your spec tree carries the most weight: grab Eye Beam first, rush First Blood to make Blade Dance hit hard, then pick up sustain and Fury nodes. The rest is flexible toward the imported build.
Turn War Mode on for the experience bonus and you get three PvP talent slots worth using even against mobs:
Your leveling rotation is short, and it barely changes from a single mob to a full pack. Damage is heavily front-loaded, so the whole plan is to dump your hardest hits the instant you engage, then clean up with builders while everything is already dying. Single target, top to bottom:
Dungeon pulls use the same order with one tweak: hold Eye Beam for the next pack if the current one will die in a couple of seconds. For big or elite packs, open with Metamorphosis. And keep Blur on cooldown while you are tanking a pack — it is a defensive, not a panic button, so press it early.
Item level beats stat weights almost every time while leveling, so take the higher-ilvl piece even with the "wrong" secondaries. When two upgrades are close, follow this order:
Agility is your primary stat, so any upgrade that carries more of it is a flat damage gain. Among secondaries, Critical Strike leads for the burst that clears a pack before it reaches you, with Mastery close behind.
These are the Midnight consumables to keep up as you push from 80 to 90. Every one is on the Auction House, so you can buy and forget instead of farming for them:
Save the flask and combat potion for dungeons and elite pulls. The oil and food are cheap enough to keep up around the clock.
A clean interface is quietly one of the bigger leveling upgrades you can make. Havoc moves fast and reacts to mouseovers and burst windows on the fly, so a few sharp macros and a light addon set keep you blasting instead of fumbling across your bars.
The first one you should bind is a mouseover interrupt. A plain Disrupt macro lets you kick a caster the instant you hover it, without dropping your current target or wasting a global swapping back and forth. This is the single most useful macro a melee leveler can run — it becomes essential the first time you set foot in a dungeon.

Next is a one-button burst macro. It fires Metamorphosis and both trinkets together, so every cooldown you own lands on the same pull instead of drifting out of sync. Save it for elite mobs, rares, and the dense packs where the extra damage actually changes the outcome.

The last one is a pulling tool. A mouseover Throw Glaive lets you tag a single mob from range and peel it off a pack without committing your whole rotation, which keeps your pulls controlled when you are threading through dense quest areas.

You do not need a class-specific pack to level Havoc; the essentials are the same ones every leveler leans on. A questing helper to auto-handle turn-ins, a clean cooldown tracker so you never miss a burst window, and the auction tools that keep your consumables stocked cover the basics. Best Midnight AddonsNo. Midnight added Devourer, a second damage spec, so Demon Hunters now have two DPS options plus Vengeance for tanking. Havoc is still the recommended leveler: simpler rotation, stronger front-loaded AoE, better self-healing, and the class's signature mobility. Devourer works too if you want the new playstyle.
Only for dungeons. Tanks get instant queues, and Vengeance is far harder to kill, so wall-to-wall instance spam can out-pace questing. Out in the world, Havoc kills faster. Plenty of players level Havoc and flip to Vengeance only when they want to grind dungeons.
At level 71. Take Fel-Scarred for leveling, since it empowers your Metamorphosis with Demonsurge for more burst and sustain. You can respec to Aldrachi Reaver later at no cost.
Whichever you like the look of; the differences are tiny while leveling. Horde takes Blood Elf for Arcane Torrent. Alliance picks Night Elf with Shadowmeld or the new Void Elf, both fine.
