The Ashenvale Chimaera is a magnificent two-headed beast, a living siege weapon that once terrorised the battlefields of Kalimdor. Its serpentine necks, leathery wings, and the crackling energy that dances between its two maws make it a favourite among collectors who appreciate savage, untamed creatures. The flavour text speaks to its fearsome reputation: “Ashenvale chimaeras were used frequently by the Kaldorei to decimate structures in battles against the humans, orcs, and undead.” For mount collectors, this chimaera is not just a trophy — it is a piece of night elf military history, a flying engine of destruction from the ancient wars of Azeroth.
Added in patch 8.1.0 “Tides of Vengeance”, the Ashenvale Chimaera has become a prized possession among Warfront rare hunters. With an estimated drop rate of approximately 5.57%, the real challenge is not the drop chance but the unique Warfront reset system that governs Darkshore rares. Unlike most rare spawns that reset daily or weekly, you can only loot this mount once per full Warfront cycle — meaning you have a limited number of attempts each time the zone enters the Patrol phase. The chimaera itself is a formidable opponent with over 460,000 health, but the real key is understanding when you can even attempt to kill it. For those willing to master the rhythm of the zone’s phases — Patrol, Contribute, and Siege — the reward is one of the most iconic flying mounts from the Battle for Azeroth era.
The Ashenvale Chimaera mount drops from Alash’anir, a rare elite chimaera found in Darkshore. Unlike many other Warfront rares, Alash’anir is available to both factions regardless of who controls the zone. The only requirement is that Darkshore is in the Patrol phase of the Warfront cycle. The mount has an estimated drop rate of approximately 5.57% (based on Wowhead data), which is relatively high for a rare mount. However, the limiting factor is the unique Warfront lockout system: Alash’anir can only be looted once per full Warfront cycle (specifically, once per Patrol phase), regardless of how many times you kill him. Killing him again in the same cycle will yield no loot — and no mount chance.
To access the correct phase of Darkshore, your character must be at least level 50. You may need to complete an introductory quest at the Warfront table in the Port of Zuldazar for Horde or the Boralus docks for Alliance. The zone cycles through three phases (Patrol, Contribute, Siege), and Alash’anir only spawns during the Patrol phase — but unlike other Darkshore rares, you do not need your faction to control the zone. Even if the opposing faction holds Darkshore, as long as the Patrol phase is active, you can fly in and kill Alash’anir.
Before you can encounter Alash’anir, you must ensure that Darkshore is in its Battle for Azeroth phase (the post‑Teldrassil burning version of the zone). This is the same requirement as for all Darkshore warfront rares.
How to check your phase: Travel to Darkshore. If the zone looks like the classic Cataclysm version (undamaged, with no warfront structures or world quests), you are in the wrong phase. You need to speak to Zidormi to switch to the current timeline. Zidormi is located at the northern border of Darkshore, near the entrance to Ashenvale.
Zidormi location: /way Darkshore 48.0, 24.0 (near the bridge to Ashenvale)
To access the Warfront system and the phased Darkshore, you may need to complete an introductory questline. Visit the Warfront table in your faction’s hub:
The Warfront table will show the current status of Darkshore and allow you to queue for the introductory quest if you have not completed it. Once you have access, you can enter the phased Darkshore zone and begin hunting rares when the Patrol phase is active.
When Darkshore is in the Patrol phase (the zone’s world quests and rares are active), you can find Alash’anir northeast of Bashal’Aran, the night elf ruins in central Darkshore. Use the following coordinates:
/way Darkshore 56.6 30.8 – Alash’anir (approximate patrol area)
Important: Unlike other Darkshore rares, faction control does not matter for Alash’anir. Whether the Horde or Alliance controls the zone, as long as the Patrol phase is active, you can kill and loot this rare. This makes the Ashenvale Chimaera one of the more accessible Warfront mounts — you do not have to wait for your faction to win the cycle.
Combat notes: Alash’anir is a Rare Elite with approximately 464,870 health. This is significantly higher than other Darkshore rares (which typically have 54k–66k health). At level 60+, he is still soloable, but the fight will take longer. He is a chimaera, so expect breath attacks and melee swipes. He has no particularly deadly mechanics, but his high health pool means you should be prepared for a longer fight. Avoid standing directly in front of him to dodge breath attacks. After death, he drops the Ashenvale Chimaera directly into your inventory (bind‑on‑pickup).
Important reset rule: Even if you kill Alash’anir, you will not receive loot again until the Warfront cycle completes and a new Patrol phase begins. This means you have roughly one attempt per character per full cycle — which can last from several days to over a week. The NPC itself respawns relatively quickly (roughly 5–10 minutes after being killed), but that timer is irrelevant for loot purposes; the lockout is tied solely to the Warfront cycle.
The Warfront system in Battle for Azeroth controls the availability of rares and world quests in Darkshore. The zone cycles through three phases, and only during the Patrol phase do rares (including Alash’anir) spawn and become lootable. Below is a breakdown of each phase:
Once the Siege phase ends, the cycle restarts with a new Patrol phase, and all rares become available again — regardless of which faction “wins” the Warfront. The only thing that changes with victory is which faction gets the portal convenience; the rares themselves are always accessible to everyone during Patrol.
How to check the current phase: Visit the Warfront table in your faction’s hub. The table will show a progress bar and the current phase text. You can also open your world map and look at Darkshore – if you see world quest icons, you are in Patrol phase. Unlike other rares, you do not need to check faction control icons; any world quests mean Alash’anir is present.
Because you only get one loot attempt per character per Warfront cycle (Patrol phase), the most efficient way to farm the Ashenvale Chimaera is to use multiple level 50+ alts. The good news is that you do not need to wait for your faction to control the zone — as soon as the Patrol phase begins, you can fly to Darkshore (or use the portal if your faction has it) and kill Alash’anir on every alt you have.
Pro tip: The Warfront cycle length depends on your faction’s contribution speed. On active servers, a full cycle can take about 3–5 days. On less populated servers, it may take a week or more. You can speed up the cycle by donating resources during the Contribute phase (if you want the next Patrol phase to arrive faster).
Tracking the Warfront cycle and rare spawns is much easier with a few quality‑of‑life addons. Below are the most useful tools for this farm.
Pro tip: Combine SavedInstances with a simple note on your desktop or calendar. Write down the date when you last saw Patrol phase active – this helps you predict when the next Patrol might start.
