The second PvP season of World of Warcraft: The War Within has arrived, bringing a fresh wave of content and competition. Season 2 shakes up Azeroth’s battlefields with a brand-new Arena map, enticing new mounts as PvP rewards, revamped seasonal quests, and a host of balance changes that have players rethinking the meta.
In this overview, we’ll break down all the notable new features of Season 2 PvP: from the claustrophobic chaos of the Cage of Carnage arena to the electric bite of the new Vicious mount – and examine how class balance shifts are influencing the current PvP gameplay.
Season 2 of The War Within introduces several exciting features and improvements. Here’s a quick rundown of the major additions in Season 2 PvP:
As you can see, there’s plenty to get into. So let’s explore each of these points in more detail, starting with the highlight of Season 2: a brand-new Arena that’s as goblin-esque as it gets.
Found in the Demolition Dome of Undermine, the Cage of Carnage is a close-quarter gladiatorial arena with a twist: players are literally dropped into the arena through trap doors onto a central metal platform. The platform has ramps at each corner leading up to peripheral ledges, but overall the fighting space is tight and enclosed by high walls decked in goblin gizmos and flickering lights. The layout encourages fast engagements as there aren’t many places to run or hide once the battle begins.
Unique design: Unlike sprawling arenas with large pillars or open fields, Cage of Carnage’s defining features are its trap door start (adding a dramatic entrance) and the compact, circular design with low walls and ramps. There are no big line-of-sight pillars in the middle; instead, small goblin crates and the platform edges provide minimal cover. Goblin-themed hazards like sparking electrical coils and glowing vats add atmosphere, though they don’t deal damage – they’re mostly visual flair. However, the map’s verticality is limited (some have likened it to a "less Z-axis Blade’s Edge" arena), meaning players can’t abuse height differences much. The emphasis is on close-quarters combat and quick positioning. It’s a flashy arena that fits the goblin Undermine setting and offers a fresh backdrop for 2v2, 3v3, and Solo Shuffle matches.
How have players received Cage of Carnage so far? Reactions are a mixed bag. On one hand, many appreciate getting a new arena (something that doesn’t happen every expansion) and enjoy the overall Goblin aesthetic. On the other hand, some PvPers feel the map doesn’t significantly alter the gameplay. Commenters joked that "It sure is a room that you can fight in" – in other words, it’s a cool-looking arena, but ultimately just a small room with few unique gameplay elements. The lack of substantial line-of-sight blockers and the straightforward layout mean the Arena play doesn’t change drastically on this map. A few players even wondered if any moving components or gimmicks would be present (could the trap doors open again mid-fight, or would there be hazards?), but so far it’s simply a static arena – no random goblin bombs or moving floors to worry about, just you and your opponents in a confined pit. Some enjoy this purity; others find it underwhelming.
If just grinding rated PvP for MMR's sake isn’t enough for you, Season 2 also continues the seasonal PvP quests introduced in The War Within. These quests give additional incentives (and rewards) for engaging in PvP content each week, even outside of rated play. They are picked up from Ruffious at the Contender’s Gate in Dornogal. In Season 2, the available PvP quests include:
In comparing to previous seasons, these quests in Season 2 are almost identical to Season 1’s offerings. In fact, the names and requirements didn’t change at all from Season 1. So if you were already in the habit of doing "Spark of War" and "Preserving" quests last season, you can expect the same routine in Season 2. Some PvPers expressed a bit of disappointment that there weren’t new or rotating objectives (for example, a quest for Battleground Blitz or for specific battleground objectives might have been interesting).
Also, a point of critique from Season 1 was that the world PvP gear from Bloody Tokens lagged behind other gear, making the open-world PvP quests less attractive later on. In Season 2, Bloody Tokens gear starts at ilvl 632 (675 in PvP), which is better than Season 1’s, but still only on par with low-ranked Honor gear. This means dedicated PvPers still prioritize Honor/Conquest gear, but at least casual or world PvP-focused players get a path to gear up (and the quests help them catch up a bit each week).
No PvP Season guide can really go without addressing the meta: those ever-changing sands of class and spec balance. Season 2 arrived alongside Patch 11.1, which delivered a huge amount of class changes impacting both PvE and PvP. The result has been a noticeable shift in which classes and comps currently dominate Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds.
Damage dealers are the driving force behind any comp, and Season 2 has shaken up their rankings a lot. Several specs rose to the top thanks to tuning changes, while others fell behind. Here’s a look at the current front-runners in rated PvP:
Best DPS Specs in Season 2 PvPSurvivability is more important than ever in burst-heavy Season 2, and that puts healers in the spotlight. Some specs bring unmatched throughput and utility, while others struggle to keep up. See which healers stand out this season:
Best Healer Specs in Season 2 PvPThe new season kicks off with a fresh batch of PvP rewards for players bold enough to climb the Rated ladders. This time, mounts steal the spotlight — but they’re just the beginning. By diving into Season 2, you’ll also earn prestigious titles, striking elite transmogs, and even a dazzling new weapon illusion.
Perhaps the most coveted prize is the new Gladiator mount: the Prized Gladiator’s Fel Bat. This fearsome fel-infused bat is awarded to players who achieve Gladiator status in Season 2 – that is, win 50 games in 3v3 Arena at Elite (2400+) rating.
Visually, the Prized Gladiator’s Fel Bat sports bronze-copper tones and glowing runes, distinguishing it from last season’s version. Like past Gladiator mounts, it’s a prestigious trophy that flies at top speed and will become a permanent collectible for those skilled and dedicated enough to earn it.
For players climbing the ranks more gradually, the Season 2 "Vicious" mount offers a more accessible goal. This season’s theme is aquatic: the mount is the Vicious Electro Eel, a snarling electric eel that slithers through the air as a ground and flying mount.
There are Alliance and Horde color variants (blue for Alliance, red for Horde), earned through the seasonal rated PvP reward track. Winning rated PvP matches at 1000+ rating fills a progress bar - when it’s filled, you unlock the Vicious Electro Eel for your faction. Essentially, 100% fill equates to getting 2400 honor in any rated play (roughly 40 wins at Combatant MMR, fewer if in higher MMR).
The Eel mount has gotten a lot of attention – as there not many giant Eel mounts present in WoW’s history!
The PvP weapon illusion for The War Within Season 2 is Jackpot, unlocked at 1950 rating! It gives your weapon a fiery orange glow with bursts of flame sparks.

There are also 2 unique titles that you'll only be able to get in Season 2 Of The War Within by playing at the highest 3v3 Arenas or Solo Shuffle ratings:
The War Within officially established Battleground Blitz as its own PvP mode and ladder, and Season 2 is bringing exclusive rewards tied specifically to it:
With these titles on the line, Battleground Blitz offers a fresh incentive to jump in (on top of the mod being just generally fun).

The meta feels more diverse, gearing is smoother, and the new rewards give PvPers real goals at every skill level. It’s not yet perfect, but it’s a confident step forward that builds well on what Season 1 started. For veterans and newcomers alike, there’s plenty to fight for — so queue up, dive in, and earn it.
