The Bloodgorged Hunter is a stunning silver‑blue bat whose enormous wingspan and haunting crimson eyes evoke the dark, forgotten corners of Azeroth. Its sleek fur, razor‑sharp claws, and unsettlingly full belly tell a story of countless hunts — as the flavour text wryly notes: “If he wasn't so full, you wouldn't have caught him.” For collectors who appreciate unconventional, nocturnal flying mounts with a touch of dark humour, this bat is a true prize — a rare and eye‑catching companion that stands out in any sky.
Added in patch 8.1.0 “Tides of Vengeance”, the Bloodgorged Hunter has earned a notorious reputation among mount collectors as one of the most elusive rewards from the Island Expeditions system. With an estimated drop chance that some hunters have placed below 1%, this bat is not something you acquire by accident — it demands focused effort, strategic planning, and often hundreds of runs. For collectors who have chased this winged predator for months or even years, finally seeing it drop from an expedition chest or appear inside a salvage crate is a moment of genuine triumph. It is more than just a mount; it is a badge of perseverance worn by the most dedicated island explorers. Unlike some expedition mounts that require specific enemy types, the Bloodgorged Hunter offers a simpler path — it can drop from any of the 120 or 175 Doubloon Salvage Crates, making it one of the more accessible rare expedition mounts to target through currency farming.
The Bloodgorged Hunter mount can be obtained in two ways through the Island Expeditions system:
The Island Expedition vendor is located near the Expedition Map in the Port of Zuldazar for Horde or the Port of Boralus for Alliance.
Island Expeditions are a Battle for Azeroth feature where teams of three players compete against either AI‑controlled enemies (PvE mode) or another team of players (PvP mode) to collect Azerite. The first team to reach the required Azerite total wins. Expeditions are available at three difficulty levels: Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. Higher difficulties offer better rewards but also present stronger enemies and more challenging mechanics.
Each expedition takes place on a randomised island — such as Crestfall, Jorundall, Rotting Mire, Havenswood, or Snowblossom — and the enemy types vary from run to run. The Bloodgorger bats can appear as enemies on any island, but they are not guaranteed. You will know you are fighting bats when you see enemies like Bloodgorger, a rare bat with the abilities Bite and Vampiric Aura.
To queue for an Island Expedition, speak to the Expedition Map located in your faction’s port:
You can queue for Normal and Heroic difficulties with a partial group; the system will fill the remaining slots. However, Mythic and PvP difficulties require a fully premade group. For efficient farming, it is recommended to form a group of three players who can clear expeditions quickly on Heroic or Mythic difficulty.
Seafarer’s Doubloons are a currency earned from completing Island Expeditions, regardless of whether you win or lose. The amount you earn increases with higher difficulty levels. You can also increase your Doubloon gains by advancing a perk tree located on your faction’s ship in the port.
The most reliable way to obtain the Bloodgorged Hunter is to purchase Salvage Crates from the Island Expedition vendor. Unlike other expedition mounts that are restricted to specific crate types, the Bloodgorged Hunter can drop from any of the 120 or 175 Doubloon Salvage Crates. This means you can buy whichever crates are available each week and still have a chance at the mount.
According to community testing, the drop rate from Salvage Crates is significantly higher than from expeditions themselves — estimated at around 5–20%. Players have reported receiving the mount from Jorundall Salvage, Rotting Mire Salvage, Crestfall Salvage, and other crate types.
Important: The vendor’s inventory changes weekly. Each week, different Salvage Crates become available for purchase. The crates typically cost between 120 and 175 Doubloons each. During weeks when crates are available, prioritise spending your Doubloons.
Players have reported that Salvage Crates can sometimes drop multiple mounts at once or even duplicate mounts (though duplicates are removed due to uniqueness). This makes the crate method far more efficient than relying purely on expedition completions. Some players have reported receiving the Bloodgorged Hunter alongside other rare mounts like the Stonehide Elderhorn and Island Thunderscale from the same set of crates.
These addons will help you track Salvage rotations, optimise runs, and manage your Doubloons across characters.
Pro tip: Use SavedInstances to track which Salvage crates you have purchased each week. The vendor’s inventory changes, and you can only buy a limited number of crates per character per week.
