The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary is another opportunity to travel back in time to World of Warcraft's iconic first expansion and celebrate the key events of Outland's history. We're here to guide you through the major content of TBC, helping you get the most out of the world's best MMORPG. In this article, we'll introduce all the raids available in The Burning Crusade Anniversary Phase 1.
The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Phase 1 invites players to dive into the action across three raid instances. Two of them — Gruul’s Lair and Magtheridon’s Lair — are designed for 25-player groups but feature only three boss encounters for two. The third, the iconic Karazhan, offers the first major challenge for 10-player raids, featuring 12 boss fights.
It’s important to note that all three raids are being released in their post-nerf state. In addition, only Karazhan requires the attunement, and once you unlock access to that raid, you'll unlock it for all characters on your account. Classic raiding may be somewhat less demanding now, but it still offers excellent opportunities to gear up and have fun.
So, it’s time to take a closer look at TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 1 raids. Tremble, Outland — our adventure begins!
Gruul’s Lair is a compact 25-player raid from Blade's Edge Mountains zone, ruled by the gronn overlord Gruul the Dragonkiller. The instance features just two boss encounters, making it a quick weekly raid run hunting for valuable loot and Tier 4 set tokens.
First, players must defeat High King Maulgar and his four Ogre Council allies. Three DPS and an off-tank should handle the adds, which need to be taken down before Maulgar. Keep in mind that once the boss drops below 50% health, he enters a rage phase with increased damage output. After that comes Gruul himself, who will primarily test your raid's DPS.
Talking about the lore of Gruul's Lair raid, it refers to the Black Dragonflight. Gruul earned his title "the Dragonkiller" after his soldiers killed the dragons Deathwing left to guard his eggs, impaling their bodies on the spires of Blade's Edge Mountains. He even wounded Deathwing himself during the Second War. In Burning Crusade, players trigger his wrath by unknowingly killing one of his sons in Nagrand, making his defeat necessary for the survival of Horde and Alliance forces in Outland.
As mentioned, a full run of Gruul's Lair during the TBC Classic Anniversary requires you to defeat two bosses. Given that both encounters are in their post-nerf state, they won't pose a significant challenge for most players. This makes it easy to combine a Gruul's Lair run with the other two Phase 1 raids.
The boss list for Gruul's Lair is short and straightforward:
Now, let's go over the valuable loot you can get after storming the lair.
Like all other TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 1 raids, Gruul's Lair serves as a key source of Tier 4 set tokens. These can be exchanged for leg and shoulder armor pieces with an item level of 120. Additionally, boss encounters drop non-set items at item level 125, which sounds great too.
And let's not forget about some truly iconic — and in some cases, best-in-slot — items you can find among the loot. Yes, we're talking about the Hammer of the Naaru with its striking appearance, Bloodmaw Magus-Blade trinket for casters, and Dragonspine Trophy trinket for melee DPS.
If you want to try to get these rewards without searching for an experienced raid group, you can always order Gruul’s Lair clear from our team.
Magtheridon's Lair is a 25-player single-boss raid from Hellfire Peninsula aone and the hardest of the two Phase 1 25-man raids. Breaking into Magtheridon’s Lair halls, players have to face the former Lord of Outland, imprisoned beneath Hellfire Citadel. The fight starts from the skirmish with five Hellfire Channelers that must be tanked and interrupted until they are blasted down. After two minutes, Magtheridon breaks free and periodically uses powerful casts, which players can interrupt by finding and clicking Manticron Cubes around the room. At 30% health, the ceiling of the boss platform collapses, dealing heavy damage and instantly killing players caught under falling fragments.
Lore-wise, Magtheridon was a pit lord who conquered Draenor after its destruction and ruled as "Lord of Outland" for decades. But when Illidan Stormrage arrived in Outland, allied with blood elves and naga, he chained Magtheridon beneath Hellfire Citadel to use his corrupted blood to create an army of fel orcs. Players now enter this lair to finish the job — kill the captured pit lord and earn access to Tempest Keep in a future phase. Do you need help for this challenge? Our Magtheridon’s Lair runs are available any time you need.
Another time, Magtheridon's Lair is interesting for players in the first case because of Tier 4 set tokens. Boss drops the chest tokens which can be used for obtaining the 120 item level gear pieces. All other boss loot has 125 item level.
The one item which surely stands out from Magtheridon's Lair loot is Eye of Magtheridon. This trinket is one of the best picks for all caster DPS during TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 1.
Karazhan is a 10-player raid you can find in Deadwind Pass, Eastern Kingdoms, and it becomes the first major raiding experience in The Burning Crusade. Unlike the other Phase 1 raids, it requires players to complete the lengthy attunement questline to obtain The Master's Key. To acquire the coveted item, you have to travel across Outland collecting key fragments from dungeons like Shadow Labyrinth, The Steamvault, and The Arcatraz.
Karazhan is a massive instance which bumps players with 12 boss encounters including both required and optional ones. In most cases, raid groups will deal iwth Attumen the Huntsman, Moroes, Maiden of Virtue, Opera Event, The Curator, Terestian Illhoof, Shade of Aran, Netherspite, Chess Event, and Prince Malchezzar, with Nightbane available as a challenging optional boss for those who complete the boss-related questline.
The lore of Karazhan talks about the abandoned tower of Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal, which now is overrun by evil spirits and demons under command of Prince Malchezzar. The raid is widely considered one of the most iconic dungeons in WoW history, known for its spooky haunted house atmosphere, unique mechanics like the random Opera Event (featuring three possible performances: Wizard of Oz, Big Bad Wolf, or Romulo and Julianne), and the Chess Event where players control pieces on a chessboard. The love of community returned the revamped version of the raid as a mega-dungeon during the Legion expansion.
Karazhan is the first The Burning Crusade raid that requires you to complete a raid-related questline to get access to the haunted tower. It takes some time and involves several dungeon runs across Outland. Let's explore all the steps you must complete to obtain your Karazhan attunement:
Done! Now you can get access to one of the most thrilling instances from The Burning Crusade expansion.
When conquering Karazhan, you will face 12 encounters in total, though some of them are optional. As you explore the grim halls of this magical tower, you'll find the ghosts of its former inhabitants and the demon invaders of the Burning Legion.
