TBC Classic Karazhan Guide

Updated 03 Mar 2026 | Author: Kir | ~11 min

Karazhan stands as one of the three core raids available in Phase 1 of The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Unlike the more compact encounters found in Gruul’s Lair and Magtheridon’s Lair, Karazhan presents a massive 12-boss challenge for 10 players, complete with optional encounters that add depth to the experience. Adventurers who brave its halls can expect valuable rewards, including Tier set tokens, non-set items with an item level of 115, and a chance at a spectacular rare mount drop. In the guide below, we cover everything you need to know before entering — from the full boss list and combat tactics to detailed loot tables.

TBC Classic Anniversary Karazhan Overview

An iconic fixture of The Burning Crusade, the Karazhan raid is set within the haunted tower of the sorcerer Medivh in Deadwind Pass. This large-scale instance challenges players to overcome twelve distinct bosses, from the opening hunt against wild beasts to the final confrontation with Prince Malchezaar. Filled with unique encounters like the Opera event and a magical chess match, Karazhan stands as one of the most creatively designed and memorable raids in World of Warcraft's history.

TBC Classic Anniversary Karazhan Entrance

To find the entrance to Karazhan, you should go to the southern point of Deadwind Pass zone (/way 47.01 75.11). To reduce the time on the road to raid entrance, you can always use the service of the Horde Flight Master Breyk from Stonard in Swamp of Sorrows (/way 46.0 54.6) or the Alliance Flight Master Felicia Maline from Darkshire in Duskwood (/way 77.6 44.4).

TBC Classic Anniversary Karazhan Attunement

Karazhan is the first raid in The Burning Crusade that requires you to complete a dedicated attunement questline before you can enter its haunted halls. The process takes time and sends you through several dungeons across Outland. Below is a step-by-step walkthrough of everything you need to do to obtain your Karazhan attunement:

  1. Begin by finding Archmage Alturus in Deadwind Pass, just outside Karazhan at /way 47.0 75.6. He will offer you the quests Arcane Disturbances and Restless Activity.
  2. Once those are completed, you will receive the quest Contact From Dalaran, which sends you to the Alterac Mountains (/way 15.6 54.4).
  3. Finish the required tasks there to pick up the quest Khadgar, which will lead you to Shattrath City (/way 54.8 44.6). From this point, you will be able to collect the quest Entry Into Karazhan.
  4. Entry Into Karazhan and its follow-up quests will send you into three different dungeons to locate three key fragments. The first piece is found in the Shadow Labyrinth, behind the final boss Murmur. The second piece awaits in The Steamvault, located before the first boss. The last piece can be obtained after defeating the first boss in The Arcatraz.
  5. Once you have gathered all three key pieces, return to Khadgar in Shattrath City.
  6. You will now receive The Master's Touch quest. To complete it, you must clear the Black Morass dungeon and meet Medivh at the end of the run. He will reward you with The Master's Key.

Done! You are now attuned and ready to enter one of the most thrilling instances from The Burning Crusade expansion.

How to summon Nightbane

Nightbane is the only boss in Karazhan that requires a special attunement to summon. To earn the ability to summon him whenever you enter the raid, you first need to reach at least Honored reputation with the Violet Eye faction. Once you've done that, you'll be able to pick up Medivh's Journal — the first quest in the Nightbane attunement chain.

At the end of the questline, you'll make your way to the Master's Terrace in Karazhan and use the Blackened Urn to summon Nightbane. After defeating him, collect the Faint Arcane Essence from his corpse and bring it to Archmage Alturus. As a reward, you'll receive one of three items — Pulsing Amethyst, Infused Amethyst, or Soothing Amethyst — along with the permanent ability to summon Nightbane on future raid runs.

TBC Classic Anniversary Karazhan Tactics

While Karazhan bosses may lack the complexity of later expansion encounters, they can still pose a serious challenge to unprepared groups. Below, we break down the key mechanics of each fight and share practical tips to help you clear the raid efficiently. Quick tactics for smooth runs!

Servant Quarters Tactics

  • When you clear the entire place, one of three random bosses will appear, Hyakiss the Lurker, Rokad the Ravager, or Shadikith the Glider.
  • During the fifth with Hyakiss the Lurker Strategy, all you have to do is to dispel the Web Stun.
  • Once you meet the Rokad the Ravager, just blast the boss down healing the Ravage bleed.
  • During Shadikith the Glider encounter, healers and ranged DPS should stay easy from the Sonic Burst. Hunters should keep distance from the boss to soak the Charge.

Attumen the Huntsman Tactics

  • The first phase ends at Midnight’s 95% HP.
  • During phase two, DPS must focus a single target, stay behind Attumen at all times, and pause all attacks during phase changes while one player soaks Berserker Charge.
  • Healers should conserve mana for phase three, dispel Intangible Presence, and ensure the Charge soaker stays alive while also stopping casts during transitions.
  • Tanks need to disarm Attumen, reflect Intangible Presence, keep Midnight and Attumen 10 yards apart in phase two, and establish aggro quickly after each phase change.

Moroes Tactics

  • DPS must interrupt healer and priest adds, follow the assigned kill order, crowd control the unused adds, and assign one player to soak Blind.
  • Healers should keep adds CC'd, sustain the Garrote target, heal the off-tank through Gouge, and anticipate heavy damage during Moroes' sub-30% phase.
  • Tanks should position main tank on Moroes and off-tank on one add, saving defensive cooldowns for the final burn.

Opera Event Tactics

Little Red Riding Hood

  • DPS should run away from the Big Bad Wolf if transformed and slow their damage output if not.
  • Healers need to run if transformed, otherwise heal transformed players and anyone hit by Wide Swipe.
  • Tanks should keep the boss cornered and regrab aggro quickly after each transformation.

Romulo and Julianne

  • DPS must interrupt Eternal Affection and Julianne's other spells when possible, stay behind Romulo, and ensure both bosses die at the same time in phase three.
  • Healers should remove Poisoned Thrust and keep the Blinding Passion target alive.
  • Tanks need to face Romulo away from the raid, position with their back to a wall, remove Daring from Romulo, and use Disarm.

Wizard of Oz

  • DPS should follow the kill order (Dorothee > Tito > Roar > Strawman > Tinhead > The Crone), spread out in phase two, and avoid Cyclone.
  • Healers must prepare for heavy raid damage in phase one, then spread out and avoid Cyclone in phase two.
  • Tanks need to tank Tinhead away from the raid, spread out in phase two, and avoid Cyclone.

Maiden of Virtue Tactics

  • After Repentance, DPS should assist with healing if able and remain spread to prevent Holy Fire from chaining.
  • Healers need to stay spread as well, dispel Holy Fire quickly, and keep one healer near the boss before Repentance to maintain heals.
  • Tanks must reserve defensive cooldowns specifically for each Repentance cast.

The Curator Tactics

  • DPS must stay clear of flares, prioritize killing them, and reserve cooldowns for Evocation.
  • Healers should avoid flares, manage mana carefully, and keep one healer dedicated to the off-tank.
  • Tanks need to dodge flares while the off-tank soaks each Hateful Bolt.

Chess Event Tactics

  • Start by moving the pawns forward.
  • Prioritize taking out enemy Bishops and the Queen. Respond to Medivh's cheats as needed and finish by defeating the opposing King.

Terestian Illhoof Tactics

  • When Sacrifice is cast, DPS must instantly break Demon Chains, have a warlock handle imp adds, and cleave down Kil'rek.
  • Healers need to sustain the Sacrifice target, top Amplify Flames victims, and keep the warlock alive.
  • Tanks should focus on damage and grab Kil'rek if adds aren't dying fast enough.

Shade of Aran Tactics

Netherspite Tactics

  • DPS should avoid Void Zones, soak blue beams with cooldowns active, and hide during banish to dodge Netherbreath.
  • Healers must rotate soaking green beams, stay out of Void Zones, and hide during banish as well.
  • Tanks need to soak the red beam, avoid Void Zones, move the boss to the door before banish, and hide from Netherbreath.

Nightbane Tactics

  • DPS should move away from Charred Earth immediately. Ranged and casters should maintain maximum distance from the boss. During the air phase, prioritize killing skeletons quickly, and after Nightbane lands, give tanks a few seconds to build threat before resuming damage.
  • Healers must avoid Charred Earth entirely. Remove Distracting Ash as soon as it appears. Direct healing efforts toward anyone hit by Rain of Bones or Smoking Blast.
  • Tanks need to position the boss with its back away from the building and steer clear of Charred Earth. Pop defensive cooldowns to survive fears. Regain aggro quickly the moment Nightbane touches down.

Prince Malchezaar Tactics

  • DPS need to steer clear of Netherspite Infernals, move away from Shadow Nova, and activate defensive cooldowns if axes target them in phase three.
  • Healers should avoid Infernals, flee from Shadow Nova, dispel Shadow Word: Pain, and ensure the tank stays at full health during phase two.
  • Tanks must dodge Infernals, get out of Shadow Nova, make liberal use of defensive cooldowns in phase two, and position the boss so melee always has a safe spot.
