TBC Classic Gruul’s Lair Guide

Updated 30 Nov -0001 | Author: Kir | ~5 min

Gruul’s Lair is one of three raids available to players during The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Phase 1. It introduces the first major raid content, prepares fans for the more challenging encounters to come, and allows the heroes of Azeroth to gear up with Tier set tokens and non-set items of item level 125. Below, we’ll go over everything you need to know before storming Gruul’s Lair — from the boss list and tactics to the loot tables.

TBC Classic Anniversary Gruul’s Lair Overview

Located in the mountains of Blade's Edge, Gruul's Lair is a short but intense raid featuring only two bosses. First, players must overcome the tactical challenge of High King Maulgar and his four Ogre council members. Only then can they face the raid's namesake, the mighty Gronn lord, Gruul. This instance is most notable for its demanding encounters, specifically the multi-target council fight and Gruul's signature Growing mechanic, which requires flawless raid coordination and movement to survive.

TBC Classic Anniversary Gruul’s Lair Entrance

To find entrance to Gruul’s Lair, you should go in the north part of Blade’s Edge zone (/way 67.9 24.5). If you don’t want to get to your destination on foot, you can always use the service of Fhyn Leafshadow, the neutral Flight Master you can find at Evergrove, Ruuan Weald (/way 61.6 39.6).

TBC Classic Anniversary Gruul’s Lair Boss List

There isn’t an army of enemies to deal with during a Gruul’s Lair run — just a few trash packs leading up to the two bosses in one of The Burning Crusade’s earliest raids. Let’s take a look at the main encounters below:

  1. High King Maulgar
  2. Gruul the Dragonkiller

TBC Classic Anniversary Gruul’s Lair Tactics

Obviously, Gruul’s Lair bosses are far less complex than the encounters in later expansions, but they can still cause trouble to unprepared players. So, let’s talk about key features of every boss fight and tricks to complete them easily. Quick tactics for the quick runs!

High King Maulgar Tactics

  1. Before you can take down the High King himself, you’ll need to deal with his four allies in the following order: Blindeye the Seer, Olm the Summoner, Krosh Firehand, and Kiggler the Crazed. While the Main Tank focuses on High King Maulgar, the Off Tank and three other raid members should pick up the additional targets.
  2. Let’s go over the ideal tanking assignments. Mage should tank Krosh Firehand, using Spellsteal to remove his Spell Shield buff. Warlock should handle Olm the Summoner, as they can use the Wild Fel Stalker and Subjugate Demon to taunt the boss while also managing the Dark Decay debuff. Druid in Moonkin Form should be assigned to Kiggler the Crazed, as their spec makes them immune to his Polymorph. If you don’t have a Moonkin available, two Hunters or Mages can fill that role instead.
  3. Once the four adds are down and High King Maulgar drops below 50% HP, he gains a Flurry buff that increases his damage and attack speed. At this point, both tanks and damage dealers should pop their cooldowns to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Gruul the Dragonkiller Tactics

  1. Keep in mind that Gruul’s Growth ability increases his size by 10% and his damage by 15% every 30 seconds. This means your raid should use all offensive cooldowns from the start to end the encounter as quickly as possible.
  2. One of the tanks should soak the damage from Hurtful Strike to protect the melee DPS.
  3. Melee players should spread out around the boss in a circle, while ranged DPS need to be ready to spread out further during Ground Slam.

TBC Classic Anniversary Gruul’s Lair Loot Table

Like the other Phase 1 raids in TBC Classic Anniversary, Gruul’s Lair is a prime source of Tier 4 set tokens. These tokens can be turned in for leg and shoulder pieces with an item level of 120. In addition, both bosses drop non-set items at item level 125 — an excellent bonus for players looking to fill out their gear.
