Path of Exile 2 Expedition League Guide

Updated 03 Apr 2025 | Author: Poizy | ~7 min

This guide covers the essentials of farming Expedition in Path of Exile 2, including its rewards and how to face the pinnacle encounter by completing Expedition Logbooks. It also highlights the best Atlas Passive Nodes to optimize your currency generation.

How it Works

As you explore your Atlas and complete maps, you'll occasionally encounter the Expedition mechanic. This involves generating valuable loot by placing explosives at dig sites and defeating the monsters unearthed. The special currency you earn can be used to craft items with Rog, Gwennen, Tujen, and Dannig. Not interested in crafting? You can also sell these items to other players via the Currency Exchange.

Your primary goals during an Expedition are as follows:

  • Unearth as many Runic Monsters as possible, marked by large flagpoles across the dig site.
  • Logbook Drop Chance, Remnant Modifiers, and Detailed Records only apply to Runic monsters, so always prioritize Runic Monster spawns.
  • Empower Runic monsters by detonating Unearthed Remnants along your path. Each Remnant adds a beneficial effect and a negative side effect to the monsters you unearth afterward.
  • Always select modifiers that increase Rare monster spawns and Logbook Quantity.
  • Focus on modifiers that increase Rare monster spawns first, as these don’t work retroactively. Remnants activated before the modifier won't apply later bonuses to earlier monsters!
  • In general, prioritize the following: Duplicated Runic Monsters > Logbook Quantity > Increased Rare Monster spawns > Item Quantity > Item Rarity.
  • Blow up signs marked with the Expedition Icon to reveal Excavated Chests, which can contain Logbooks.
  • Although not your main priority, it’s worth picking up Chests when they’re conveniently located on your path.

To place your explosives, click the UI element or assign a hotkey in your settings (by default, to the left of your Skillbar). The number displayed shows how many explosives you can still place. Create a fuse line that will sequentially detonate, unearthing Remnants, Runic Monsters, and Chests within the green circle around your cursor.

Be cautious: Yellow Remnant Modifiers could make the Expedition impossible for your build. If you encounter mods you can’t deal with, skip them!

If you want to undo an explosive placement, simply click the back arrow in the UI to adjust your placement. Once satisfied, click the Detonator (usually located in the center of the Expedition, near the NPC) to start the encounter.

Defeat the monsters that emerge—Expedition monsters can be quite dangerous, so don’t let your guard down!

Tip: If your build excels against large groups of enemies (e.g., Herald of Ice builds), you can wait for all the monsters to be unearthed before clearing them in a single go.

Don't forget to click all the Excavated Chests and loot the area!

The Rewards

The exclusive rewards from Expedition include: Black Scythe Artifacts, Broken Circle Artifacts, Order Artifacts, Sun Artifacts, Exotic Coinage, and Expedition Logbooks. Additionally, Expedition encounters generate a substantial amount of Waystones and regular currency by spawning numerous additional mobs within your maps.

How to Run

Maps have a chance to naturally feature an Expedition encounter, indicated by the icon shown above.

To guarantee an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet on a Watchtower. This will add an Expedition encounter to the number of maps specified by the item’s implicit modifier. Any explicit modifiers apply to all uncompleted maps within the tower's radius.

Pinnacle Encounter

To run the Expedition Logbooks you’ve collected, take them to Dannig and select the "Show Expedition Map" option. Logbooks are essentially massive Expeditions that yield large amounts of loot. Alternatively, you can sell them to other players.

As with all Atlas mechanics in Path of Exile 2’s early access, Expedition features a Pinnacle Boss encounter. To earn Expedition Atlas Passive Points, you must defeat Olroth inside a Logbook. Olroth has a 20% spawn chance if the Logbook’s Area Level is 79 or above.

Once inside the Expedition, check your minimap for a Skull Icon, which indicates Olroth's location. Direct your explosives toward the skull until you detonate the Boss Encounter marker, which opens a path into the Crypt where you can fight him.

Olroth’s Abilities

  • Sword Slam: Olroth raises his sword and slams it into the ground, leaving a damaging area of pulsing aftershocks.
  • Boomerang Attack: Olroth throws his weapon, which returns shortly after. When he catches it, he casts a cold damage AoE around him. This AoE has no telegraph, so make sure to keep your distance when he throws his weapon.
  • Carousel Degen: Olroth summons rotating pillars that deal damage over time.
  • Charge Stab: Olroth charges up a damaging dash. His weapon glows during the charge, and he sweeps his sword from right to left at the end of the dash. Keep a medium distance to avoid being hit.
  • Arena Hazards: In Phase 2, a star-shaped pattern continuously circles the arena, releasing three types of hazards that you must dodge:
    • A tracking cold beam that slowly follows you.
    • Cold projectiles that shoot at your current position and explode in a small area.
    • A massive beam cutting through the middle of the arena, leaving Chilled Ground afterward.

Atlas Passives

  • Timed Detonations: Increases the number of Artifacts you get and speeds up detonation times.
  • Legendary Battles: Boosts the spawn rate of Rare monsters and increases Exotic Coinage drops.
  • Frail Treasures: Grants additional Chest Markers. Loot the chests quickly as they despawn after 5 seconds.
  • Weight of History: Makes Remnants empower nearby mobs more.
  • Unearthed Anomalies: Remnants drop more loot but become harder to defeat.
  • Extreme Archaeology: Greatly speeds up explosive placement, though it reduces control over which mods to choose.
  • Disturbed Rest: Increases the number of Runic Monster Markers. Expeditions become harder but more rewarding.
  • Detailed Records: Makes Logbooks drop more often and grants special implicit modifiers.

Recommended Atlas Nodes

In order of importance, allocate the following nodes:

  • Disturbed Rest: More Runic Monsters means more loot. Simple.
  • Detailed Records: Increases both the quantity and quality of Logbooks.
  • Timed Detonations: Speeds up the encounter and grants more Expedition-specific currency.
  • Legendary Battles: Increases Rare spawns, boosting loot drops, Logbooks, and Exotic Coinage drops.

You can use the Logbook Atlas Tree to raise your Logbook Area Level to 79+ to spawn Olroth, even in lower level Logbooks.

Expedition Crafting

Black Scythe Artifacts, Broken Circle Artifacts, and Order Artifacts can be used to craft gear by talking to Rog (Armour), Gwennen (Weapons), and Tujen (Jewelry). Use Exotic Coinage to reroll their crafting offerings, or convert Sun Artifacts with Dannig to a different type of your choice.

Once you’ve found a promising base, you can craft it. If nothing seems good, use an Exotic Coinage to reroll the vendor’s selection. The item level (ilvl) increases based on your character's level, scaling up to ilvl 80 at level 90.

Crafting is straightforward. You have three options:

  • Upgrade the item with the provided changes for an upgrade cost.
  • Reroll Modifiers: Removes all highlighted modifiers and adds new ones.
  • Reroll Modifier Values: Changes the numeric values of modifiers (similar to a targeted Divine Orb).
  • Add Modifier: Adds a modifier to your item (similar to a targeted Exalted Orb).
  • Remove Modifier: Removes a modifier from your item (similar to an Orb of Annulment).
  • Skip Craft: You can skip an upgrade, but the next one will cost 50% more.

You cannot skip two consecutive crafts. Once you run out of good options, or if the item is no longer worth crafting, take the item.
