Having ended Deathwing’s rampage in Cataclysm Classic, Azeroth’s heroes are now setting sail for the mist-shrouded continent of Pandaria with Mists of Pandaria Classic officially launching on July 21 of 2025! This new chapter of Classic WoW reintroduces one of Warcraft’s most iconic expansions, complete with all its beloved features and additions. Players can look forward to exploring a vibrant new land, mastering a new class, and experiencing a trove of updates that breathe fresh life into the Classic experience!
Below, we break down everything coming with the transition from Cataclysm Classic to Mists of Pandaria Classic – from content release phases and their expected timelines to the host of new gameplay features.
Be sure in one thing: you won’t miss a thing!
New Features and Changes
Mists of Pandaria brought a wealth of fresh gameplay features and meaningful improvements to World of Warcraft when it first launched back in 2012. Now, with the arrival of Classic MoP, all of these defining systems and additions are making their return. From sweeping system updates to entirely new activities, here are the standout features that players can expect to dive into when MoP Classic launches:
- Challenge Mode Dungeons: For the most dedicated dungeon delvers, Challenge Modes provide a new level of difficulty. This Mythic+ like feature lets 5-player parties race against the clock in selected dungeons set to a fixed high difficulty. Your goal is to beat target times to earn Bronze, Silver, or Gold medals – with prestigious rewards (including unique transmog gear) for the fastest heroes.
- PvP Battlegrounds and Arena: PvP players get new playgrounds in MoP Classic. Two new battlegrounds actually, the fast-paced Temple of Kotmogu and the payload-style Silvershard Mines – will open when the expansion launches, offering fresh objectives and layouts to master. Additionally, a new arena map (the Tol’viron Arena, set in Uldum’s deserts) joins the roster, ready to host Season 12 gladiatorial combat shortly after launch.
- Sunsong Ranch (Player Farm): Ever wanted to tend a farm in Warcraft? MoP introduces Sunsong Ranch in the Valley of the Four Winds, where each player can cultivate their own plot of land. Plant crops, grow cooking ingredients, and build favor with the Tillers faction – it’s a charming diversion from combat and a source of useful materials in your journey.
- Pandaren Playable Race: The enigmatic Pandaren join the fray as a neutral race that can choose to fight for either Alliance or Horde. This furry, fun-loving people brings unique lore and starting experiences, letting players adventure through the Wandering Isle starting zone before picking a faction.
- Monk Class: A brand new class, Monks harness martial arts and mystical chi energy. Available to many races (including Pandaren), Monks can tank, heal, or deal damage with fluid, combo-based attacks. Windwalker Monks strike with fists and feet, Brewmasters defend with drunken boxing techniques, and Mistweavers heal allies with ancient wisdom.
- Talent System Overhaul: Say goodbye to the old talent trees as MoP introduces a streamlined talent system. Every few levels, you’ll choose from powerful new talents rather than allocate incremental points, giving classes a fresh array of abilities and playstyles. All classes have been revamped with this new talent design, alongside many new spells and improved abilities across the board.
- Pet Battle System: Your cute vanity pets are about to become mighty combatants! The Pet Battle system debuts in MoP, effectively adding a Pokémon-like mini-game to WoW. You can collect, train, and battle pets across Azeroth, mastering type matchups and abilities in turn-based duels. It’s a completely optional but surprisingly deep new pastime for collectors and strategists alike.
All these features (and more) will be part of Mists of Pandaria Classic from the get-go, faithfully recreated to let veterans and newcomers alike experience the expansion’s signature systems.
What's Different From Original Pandaria
Beyond the "original" MoP features, Blizzard is also layering in some quality-of-life upgrades in the Classic version of Mists of Pandaria. These tweaks aim to make the experience more alt-friendly and smooth for players without compromising the old-school feel:
- Scenarios: MoP Classic introduces Scenarios – short, story-driven instances for three players. These "micro-dungeons" don’t require a specific tank/healer setup and offer a quick, fun way to experience bite-sized PvE content and lore. At launch, seven different Scenarios will be available, each presenting unique challenges and objectives for small groups.
- Alt-Friendly Reputation Gains: Earning reputation with Pandaria’s many factions will be less grindy for players with multiple characters. Once one character has progressed, Grand Commendation tokens become available to boost rep gain account-wide for that faction, speeding up the grind on alts . In addition, the onerous Golden Lotus rep requirement to unlock Shado-Pan and August Celestials dailies is being removed, meaning you can access those end-game factions sooner on every character.
- Flying Unlocks for Alts: In original MoP, you had to reach max level and purchase flying skill for each character. MoP Classic makes this easier by introducing the Tome of Four Winds, an item that lets your additional characters unlock Pandaria flying without the usual delay. If you’ve earned it on one character, your alts can soar the skies of Pandaria much faster.
- "Celestial" Dungeon Difficulty: A new twist for Classic, a Celestial difficulty will be added to Dungeon Finder after launch, analogous to the Titan Rune mode seen in Wrath and Cataclysm Classic. This optional higher difficulty for max-level dungeons will offer tougher challenges and greater rewards for those seeking an extra hurdle once regular Heroics become trivial. It’s essentially a stepping stone toward endgame raids, giving PvE players more to chew on each week.
These improvements ensure that Mists of Pandaria Classic is more than a simple copy-paste of the 2012 original. Instead, it’s a thoughtfully modernized version, adapted for today’s Classic community. The update trims away some of the old tedium and streamlines the experience, all while carefully preserving the heart and core features that made the expansion memorable in the first place.
Release Stages
The launch of Mists of Pandaria Classic isn’t just a single event: it’s a carefully structured rollout designed to let players fully enjoy each stage of the expansion. Rather than opening all content at once, Blizzard is introducing Pandaria’s raids, dungeons, PvP seasons, and key features in carefully planned phases. This approach allows the Classic community to progress together, maintain a healthy challenge curve, and keep the sense of discovery alive as new content becomes available over time.
Pre-Patch: “Attack on Theramore”
Before the expansion officially launches, the MoP Classic pre-expansion patch will set the stage. The prepatch arrives the week of July 1 2025, converting existing Cataclysm Classic realms to Mists of Pandaria. During this prepatch period, players get a head start on many features and can begin preparing for the new journey:
- New Race & Class Unlocked: Pandaren become available to create in the prepatch, and players can roll the new Monk class early. You’ll be able to level Pandaren (and Monks of other races) up to level 85 prior to MoP launch, so plenty of adventurers will be ready to jump straight into Pandaria at release.
- Theramore’s Fall Scenario: A special limited-time world event, Attack on Theramore Isle, will be active. This is a story Scenario that chronicles the infamous destruction of Theramore. In this scenario, Alliance players attempt to defend the city while Horde players assault it, depicting the escalating conflict that leads into the expansion’s storyline. Completing Theramore’s Fall during prepatch not only gives lore context but also offers a preview of the new classic-exclusive Scenario system!
- System Changes: The class revamps go live in pre-patch, meaning your talent interface will switch to the new MoP style with a completely reworked talent tree (or rather, talent selection tiers). You’ll also immediately benefit from features like AOE looting and the new pet battle system as of prepatch day. In fact, prepatch is a perfect time to start building your pet army and testing out those turn-based battles before everyone gets busy in Pandaria proper.
The prepatch period will last only a few weeks. It’s essentially your onboarding for Mists of Pandaria Classic – by the time the expansion itself launches, you can have a Pandaren Monk leveled and familiarized with all the class changes and new systems.
Expansion Launch
On July 21, the mists will part and Mists of Pandaria Classic officially goes live.
At launch, the level cap will increase from 85 to 90, ushering players into the lush continent of Pandaria to quest through its diverse zones and tackle new challenges:
- New Continent & Leveling Zones: Pandaria offers seven main leveling zones, each with its own distinct beauty and theme. Starting at the Jade Forest (a verdant coastal region where Horde and Alliance establish beachheads), you’ll progress through locales like the rural Valley of the Four Winds and the war-torn Krasarang Wilds, up into the towering Kun-Lai Summit in the north. The journey continues across the eerie Townlong Steppes and the mantid-infested Dread Wastes until you reach the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, a majestic max-level zone at Pandaria’s heart. From level 85 through 90, you will lose yourself in Pandaria’s rich landscapes and stories, discovering hidden temples, roaming hozen and jinyu villages, and perhaps even encountering the dark influence of the Sha!
- Dungeons & Raids: Launch day also brings a plethora of PvE content. There are six brand-new dungeons to conquer in Pandaria, ranging from the lightning-filled halls of the Temple of the Jade Serpent to the beer-soaked chaos of Stormstout Brewery. Meanwhile, four existing classic dungeons (such as Scholomance and parts of Scarlet Monastery) have been revamped as level 90 Heroics, offering updated challenges and loot. For raiders, MoP’s first tier consists of three separate raids that will open in the initial content phase. Adventurers will test their mettle in Mogu’Shan Vaults, Heart of Fear, and Terrace of Endless Spring – totaling 16 boss encounters that form a formidable first raid tier. All raids will be available in both 10 and 25-player modes as before, but the Raid Finder feature introduced in late Cataclysm will not be present in Pandaria Classic.
- PvP Content: PvP enthusiasts launch into Season 12 with fresh battlefields. The two new battlegrounds Silvershard Mines (a mine-cart escort battleground in Stranglethorn) and Temple of Kotmogu (a fast-paced orb control arena in Pandaria) will be available from the first week of the expansion. These BGs provide new modes that shake up the routine for Battleground fans. Additionally, the new Tol’viron Arena makes its debut for arena teams, featuring an Uldum-themed layout that will test gladiators’ skills in a brand-new environment.
Mists of Pandaria Classic’s launch is loaded with content – but it’s only the beginning. Blizzard plans to release the expansion’s subsequent content in phases, much like previous Classic expansions, to replicate the original progression. Below we outline each phase of MoP Classic’s content rollout and what new adventures each will bring.
Phase 1: LandFall
Estimated release: October 2025. A few months after launch, Phase 1 will kick off the first post-launch content patch, known originally as "Landfall". This patch brings the war between Horde and Alliance to the forefront in Pandaria:
- Pandaren Campaign: The conflict in Pandaria heats up with the introduction of the faction-specific quest hubs in Krasarang Wilds. The Alliance’s Operation: Shieldwall and the Horde’s Dominance Offensive bases open, each offering extensive daily quests and storylines following your faction’s military campaign on Pandaria. You’ll fight alongside notable heroes from your faction, progressing a story that reveals more about Pandaria’s importance in the Alliance-Horde war.
- Wrathion’s Legendary Quest Begins: Phase 1 marks the beginning of the expansion-long legendary quest chain. Wrathion, the Black Prince, has taken interest in Pandaria and offers players a chance at an eventual Legendary cloak. In Patch 5.1 he appears at the Veiled Stair to begin a series of quests (starting with "Stranger in a Strange Land") that will evolve over subsequent patches. Dedicated players can start working on Wrathion’s tasks now to stay on track for that end-of-expansion legendary reward.
- New Scenarios: Landfall adds three new Scenarios for max-level players, expanding on Pandaria’s lore. These include "A Little Patience," where Alliance players attempt a stealthy assault in Krasarang, "Dagger in the Dark," where Vol’jin leads a Horde strike against a sinister threat, and "Assault on Zan’vess," a scenario delving into the heart of the mantid empire. These scenarios continue MoP’s storytelling in quick, cooperative encounters and are accessible via the queue system.
- Brawler’s Guild: An underground fighting ring makes its debut in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. The Brawler’s Guild is a solo PvE challenge mode where players tackle increasingly difficult boss fights in an instanced arena while others watch. You’ll need an invitation to join (obtainable through drops or other players), but once inside you can fight unique bosses one-on-one to climb in rank and earn bragging rights and vanity rewards [S4]. The Brawler’s Guild quickly became a favorite small-group activity when it first appeared, and its arrival in MoP Classic will give individuals some challenging content to tackle during downtime.
In short, Phase 1 focuses on story and solo or small-group content. It also deepens the narrative and keeps max-level players busy with new quests, scenarios, and progression toward the eventual legendary item. Expect the world of Pandaria to feel more alive (and contested) as the faction war escalates on its shores!
Phase 2: Rise of the Thunder King
Estimated release: late December 2025. Patch 5.2 is one of Mists of Pandaria’s largest content updates, unleashing an epic new raid and additional exploration zones:
- Throne of Thunder Raid: The Thunder King rises! Phase 2 unlocks the Throne of Thunder, a massive 13-boss raid on the remote Isle of Thunder. Players will assault the fortress of the resurrected Mogu emperor Lei Shen, battling through formidable foes and intricate encounters. Throne of Thunder is essentially MoP’s Ulduar – a sprawling, atmospheric raid that many consider a highlight of the expansion.
- New Zones – Isle of Thunder & Isle of Giants: Alongside the raid, the Isle of Thunder zone itself opens for questing. Similar to Isle of Quel’Danas in TBC or Tol Barad in Cataclysm, this outdoor zone features daily quests and a staged unlock as players contribute to their faction’s advance on Lei Shen’s citadel. Expect an array of new quests, rare spawns, and treasures as you fight through the thunderstorm-battered island. Meanwhile, the separate Isle of Giants also appears off Pandaria’s coast: a savage land populated by massive dinosaurs. Here, intrepid explorers can hunt elite giant dinos (including the world boss Oondasta) and even collect bones as a currency to purchase a unique spectral raptor mount. Both zones add substantial open-world content to keep players engaged beyond the raid itself.
- World Bosses – Nalak and Oondasta: With Throne of Thunder, two new world bosses enter the rotation. Nalak, the Storm Lord patrols outside the raid entrance on Isle of Thunder, ready to shock unwary groups, while Oondasta roams the Isle of Giants as one of the fiercest world bosses ever introduced (in original MoP, Oondasta earned infamy for wiping entire raid groups with ease). These bosses drop high-end loot and will require sizable forces to defeat – they’ll certainly be major targets for guilds once this phase goes live.
- Legendary Quest Continues: Wrathion’s quest line doesn’t sit still – Phase 2 will add new steps to the legendary chain. Players will be tasked with gathering Titan Runestones from Throne of Thunder bosses and ultimately defeating Lei Shen for a chance to upgrade their legendary gem or acquire a new reward. The Black Prince’s story deepens as he observes the rise and fall of the Thunder King, setting up greater challenges to come.
Phase 2 is a major milestone in MoP Classic, bringing one of its most content-rich patches. Between a superb raid, expansive new questing areas, and ferocious world bosses, Rise of the Thunder King will keep the community busy through the winter and firmly raise the power cap with a new tier of epics to earn.
Phase 3: Escalation
Estimated release: TBA. Patch 5.3, titled Escalation, is a bit lighter in PvE but sets the stage for MoP’s endgame and offers a variety of content and system updates:
- Battlefield: Barrens World Event: Tensions reach a boiling point back in Kalimdor with Battlefield: Barrens. In this phase, Garrosh Hellscream’s actions lead to open rebellion by the Darkspear Trolls. Players of both factions will undertake a world event centered in the Northern Barrens, gathering resources and attacking Kor’kron forces to help Vol’jin’s rebellion. This event involves weekly quests to collect items (e.g. lumber, meat, stone, and oil) dropped by mobs across the Barrens, and culminates in assaults on enemy strongholds. It’s a cross-faction PvE event, meaning both Horde and Alliance are working (indirectly) toward a common goal of undermining Garrosh. Participating will yield some catch-up gear and the chance at cosmetic rewards – and it serves as story buildup for the Siege of Orgrimmar to come.
- New Scenarios (and Heroic Modes): Escalation introduces four new Scenarios, and notably, Heroic scenario modes. The new scenarios are "Battle on the High Seas" (a pirate-themed adventure on the open ocean), "Blood in the Snow" (where you aid Moira and the dwarves against a frost troll threat), "Dark Heart of Pandaria" (digging into secrets buried beneath Pandaria’s surface), and "Secrets of Ragefire" (a look at what Garrosh is brewing beneath Orgrimmar). These mini-stories flesh out events around Azeroth and Pandaria. The option to run scenarios in Heroic mode also becomes available, giving scenario enthusiasts a way to up the difficulty.
- New PvP Map – Deepwind Gorge: PvP gets an infusion in 5.3 with the addition of Deepwind Gorge, a new battleground set in the Valley of the Four Winds. This BG’s theme is resource control: teams vie to capture and cart gold shipments while holding mines, combining elements of Arathi Basin-style node control and capture-the-flag mechanics.
- New Arena – Tiger’s Peak: Likewise, arena fighters will see a new arena map unlocked: Tiger’s Peak, located atop the Shado-Pan Monastery in Kun-Lai Summit. This arena offers a fresh environment for high-stakes 3v3 skirmishes. It was originally added in patch 5.3 and will now become available in MoP Classic’s PvP season once Phase 3 hits.
- Continued Legendary Progress: Wrathion isn’t done with you yet. In this phase, players further their quest by empowering their legendary gem and preparing for the final steps. More narrative is revealed regarding the brewing conflict with Garrosh, as Wrathion evaluates the strength of the Horde and Alliance in the lead-up to the final confrontation. By the end of 5.3 content, heroes should be well on their way, just one patch shy of claiming the legendary cloak itself.
Phase 3 doesn’t add a raid tier, acting as an interlude to set the stage for the grand finale. It introduces story-driven scenarios and an ongoing world event that brings the war directly to Garrosh’s doorstep. Players can use this time to catch up on gear (the Barrens event rewards and heroic scenarios help with that), finish any remaining Throne of Thunder goals, and get ready for the final and climactic patch of Mists of Pandaria!
Phase 4: Siege of Orgrimmar
Estimated release: TBA. The final phase of Mists of Pandaria Classic will unleash Patch 5.4, Siege of Orgrimmar, which is the culmination of the expansion’s story and the last major content update:
- Siege of Orgrimmar Raid: Garrosh Hellscream’s reign as Warchief comes to an explosive end as both Alliance and Horde rebels lay siege to the orc capital of Orgrimmar. The Siege of Orgrimmar raid features 14 bosses sprawling across Azeroth – starting in the razed Vale of Eternal Blossoms and then delving beneath Orgrimmar itself for the final confrontation. This raid is truly epic in scope, with players fighting not only Garrosh’s forces but also the Sha-corrupted monstrosities he has unleashed. In MoP Classic, Siege of Orgrimmar will be the crowning challenge so expect this finale to test the coordination and skill of even veteran raid teams, as Garrosh proves to be one of Warcraft’s most infamous end-bosses.
- Timeless Isle: Patch 5.4 introduces the Timeless Isle, a completely new endgame zone designed as a sandbox of exploration and rare hunting. This mysterious island off the coast of Jade Forest is filled with powerful timeless creatures, hidden chests, secret mini-events, and the Celestials – four world bosses that drop endgame loot. There are no traditional quests here; instead, players explore and discover events at their own pace, collecting Timeless Coins to buy rewards and finding Timeless Armor Tokens that instantly create gear pieces. The Timeless Isle serves as a catch-up gear haven and a playground for achievement hunters, mount collectors, and those who enjoy less-structured content. Its arrival in Phase 4 will give everyone (raiders and non-raiders alike) plenty to do outside Orgrimmar’s gates.
- Legendary Cloak Finale: If you’ve been dutifully following Wrathion’s quest since Phase 1, Phase 4 is when you’ll finally earn your reward. The last chapter of the legendary quest chain unfolds, sending players on challenging tasks including defeating the Celestials in single combat and confronting Garrosh. Success yields the coveted Legendary Cloak, a powerful item with game-changing on-use effects (and a stylish visual proc!). MoP Classic will allow a new generation of players to obtain these legendary cloaks, complete with their unique visuals and buffs, as a badge of honor for persisting through the expansion’s content.
- Additional Features: Patch 5.4 originally added the Proving Grounds, a solo skill challenge where players could test their tanking, healing, or DPS prowess in scaled scenarios to earn medals. It’s likely Proving Grounds will be present in MoP Classic as well, giving players a training ground to practice roles or just compete for best-in-class bragging rights.
Phase 4 will round out Mists of Pandaria Classic with a bang. Between toppling Garrosh in an ambitious raid and wandering the Timeless Isle’s adventures, this phase promises a fitting send-off for the expansion. It will likely last for a significant duration (giving players time to savor the final tier) before Blizzard moves on to whatever lies beyond MoP in the Classic series.
